- Let's face it we have all installed the cleats wrong at home and caused knee pain. This video goes to show how to set them up properly at home to get cleats mounted and miles pedaled. Keep in mind this is no replacement for a true cleat fitting by a bike shop fitter so tread lightly and listen to your body so you don't injure yourself.

This blew me away. Probably the most succinct explanation of proper adjustment. Following the info in this video I alleviated a ton of issues. Turns out my cleats were nearly a full inch forward of where they should be - and my feet were suffering horribly for it. By the end of a 20 mile ride my feet were sore and the toes were numb. Now all of that pain is gone. Amazing how one simple adjustment changes the whole experience.
I just bought and tried out my new pair of Specialized expert xc's yesterday. My feet hurt and my toe was numb too on the right foot. Glad I stumbled onto this video, time for the proper setup.
I am just happy to see the word "succinct"
Having been in Radiology for 12 years now, I can undoubtedly say that this is the most well thought out and proper setup I could ever imagine. I very much appreciate you.
For many years I dealt with numbness and knee pain, I thought those were issues I had to deal with. Last week I stumbled into your video and decided to try your method. Whoa no more knee pain or foot numbness! Thank you for the help.
Thank you SO much for posting this! I am trying clipless pedals for the first time ever (after 37 years of Mountain Biking) and I was pretty nervous about it, but this guide got me spot-on, first time. I got the Crank Brothers Candy one pedals, and after following your tutorial, everything worked out perfectly! I went out on my usual training loop this morning, and I now can't believe I waited so long to go clipless.
Great video. I'm on my first pair of cycling shoes. I checked a lot of my favourite bike channels and this was the best explainer I found. Using a straight edge to get an idea of where the cleat is going to be was the really helpful hint I was looking for. Thanks.
I have just got some cleats for the first tome and it soon become apparent setup wasn't just screw them into the bottom of the shoe. Thank you for such a stirght forward & simple video on how to do this.
Super helpful! I’ve only ever ridden with tennis shoes so this is a completely new experience and I don’t even know what I don’t know. I appreciate your thorough explanation!
This video was so helpful, it stands out of plenty of others trying to explain this topic. Thank you very much!
Thanks for the information. Finally someone who tells where to set up the cleat......had it done according to other videos and my hip and knees hurt like crazy at times, or my left toes would fall asleep.
Thanks for the thorough explanation on position. As a newbie to cleats I had no idea where to even begin to position them, so thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
Outstanding summary and demo. I learned a lot about proper fitting that I didn't know and that will make my ride (and foot pain) much better.
Thanks for the video. I always new there was a right way, but I never knew how to do it. I used to just take a wild guess and it's no wonder I had knee pain.
This made my indoor cycling experience WAY more enjoyable. No more foot pain & numb toes! Thank you!!!!
Great to hear!
Very handy! Thank you ! Now I Feel ready To install my spd cleats on my shoes! I knew some adjustments were required but did not know how! Your video is Surely helping thank you!
Thank you so much for this tutorial on proper alignment of the cleats. I as well had my cleats too far on my tarsals instead of the metatarsals. I will be testing the new position of my cleats this eve when I teach my spin class!
Fantastic video. Clear, succinct, easy to follow instructions. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you! I'm a new rider and had no clue as to any of this. Now I'll know what to look out for.
Good video. Right amount of useful detail. No unnecessary gub.
Thanks for this. Came across this useful video and wasn’t even looking for it!
Just ordered new pair of gravel shoes and will definitely set them up properly. I’ve always just screwed them on and hit the road…didn’t know it was so important. Thanks👍
super job. keeping simple but technical enough for people to properly set up there new cleats. I am going to try this video
Informative video ty. Do not run clipless yet but this is good info to know.
Great explanation and easy to follow. Best set up instructions I’ve found
This video was helpful when I installed the cleats on my bike shoes for my Echelon bike. The ergonomic segment about how to measure the rotation of the legs/foot helped me as I have sensitive knees. Thanks
Thanks so much! Your explanation actually makes this fun.
This is great info. But I always set my float (rotational alignment) so that the inward float (heels in) stops just before my shoes make contact with my chain stays when the cranks are pointed aft. The degrees of total float are enough to accommodate any difference in my natural foot angle. I don’t see a need to tune that per foot as long as your natural foot position falls within the float range.
Thank you for your simple clear instructions! Zip zap! Installed and very comfortable! 😃
Wonderful to have on hand for little ones.
Nice video very helpful thanks, I'm a newbie so found your tutorial so easy to follow 😊
Very technical but useful info and I was expecting SH56 vs SH51 :)
Your method worked like a charm. Thanks!
This video is so great man. Saludos desde las montañas de Colombia.
Thanks for making this video! Very short, detailed, and straight to the point. Will be adjusting my right shoe to match the slight toe out I have when sitting up on a high stool.
Good luck!
Thank you for the tip !
I'm gonna buy Giro Privateer Lace for my new Trek Checkpoint.
Nice!
Very helpful video. Followed your steps and no more knee strain. Thanks!
Great information. I wished I'd seen it before mounting my cleats. I did have to play around to get them right, but will double check based on this to see if I have it right.
That's a really nicely done video mate, thanks from the UK.
Very helpful especially to a beginner to SPD shoes and cleats.
All the best.
Superb "how-to". Many thanks.
I wish you had gone just a bit further and show how to get them off the pedals, but I guess I’ll figure it out. Thank you. Subbed and liked. Ps, I’m changing from the other style of cleat where you can’t walk in the shoes basically, although I have.
Super useful information. Can’t wait to get mine setup.
I thought my shoes were just too tight in the toes when I started getting tingling in them when doing a steep hill climb on my NordicTrack s22i, but it was strange that I was fine in spin class. I am definitely going to try this as soon as I get home from work
I just stumbled across this. Thanks! Solid info./advice. Going to go and install cleats on my new shoes using your method. Cheers!
I have the exact same watch. The citizen skyhawk AT titanium. Beautiful watch!!
Nice!
This was super helpful! Such great tips on installing cleats for a first timer!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for this, on point short and sweet
Dang, finally an American cycling video 👏🏽😅
Once you've determined ideal cleat position, place a small dab of grease into each of the captive nuts on the base of your shoe and then use a torque wrench with 4 mm hex bit to tighten the bolts to SHIMANO's recommended torque setting of 5-6Nm (43-52 IN LB) (Shimano source)
So succinct and helpful. Thank you.
Great explanation
Nice video! Looking forward to getting my first clipless shoes delivered.
Awesome! Good luck getting yourself set up
Wow. That was a great explanation! Thank you!!
Great video, as usual! I just bought my first pair of cycling shoes and am looking forward to trying them out.
Have fun!
When I purchased my first cleats at the local bike store, they never went through this procedure- just bolted on straight- and my feet are not! Thanks.
Wow that was really really easy to follow
Amazing tutorial!👍
great explanation my man, thank you
Amazing explanation! Thanks!
Thanks so much! I thought numb toes was just a thing that happened.

SHIMANO’s recommended torque setting of 5-6Nm (43-52 IN LB) for cleats
very helpful.
Thanks! Now i know👍
Does this have to be so complicated and technical? Great video
Very nice!!
Great tutorial thanks. I almost got it right in the first attempt ;) I had to use a spacer though as my M520 wouldn't work right out of the box with my cleats... What does it do if I push the cleat more to the top?
Great video thanks
Thank you
Watching. Very helpful
Glad to help.
Thank you so much🙏🙏
As you were tightening the left foot kleet, I noticed that the wrench you used (on both shoes) was a torque wrench...
What's the brand of the wrench and as well; what did you set the torque at in order to "properly" tighten the screws that holds the kleet in place?
Excellent, thank you.
Your welcome
EXCELLENT 🚲 🚴🏾♀️
thanks very much. could spend more time with the straight edge positioning the cleat. the tip of the cleat just outside of the straightedge???
Great video, liked and subbed
Great video! Thank you for sharing. Do you remember what the torque specifications were?
5-6nm
@@Jamesthebikeguy Thank you very much!
Awesome & Thanks :)
Very useful - i was doing it all wrong +++
Glad it helped!
Thank you for a well done video. What torque wrench are you using?
I’m curious to see a review on those shoes. Also wondering if it would be better or different to check the natural rotation of one’s foot in standing vs sitting?
I wonder whether the distance of the pedals (so called Q-factor) might also have some effect how you hold feet.
Might be better to unscrew the pedals (mark the distance first on the floor), then clip in, and try to stand on the marks with the shoe+pedal assembly. This might help to adjust the rotation as well, although I don't know how to unclip the shoe without messing up the adjustment. Maybe release it somehow by poking into the right point in the pedal with a screwdriver.
Wouldn't it be better for you to place both straight to correct the posture of your leg and pedal more efficiently?
Grease..? i did that, and as i was riding the cleat loosened and fell off, Lost it in the gutta.. I now use blue locktite to keep from loosing expensive cleats..
The metatarsal is a bone in the foot. Do you position at the front of it, essentially where the toe bones meet the metatarsal??
