  • This video shows my recently revised car transfer technique both for getting in and out and sitting the wheelchair on the front passenger seat. I then show how I can load the wheelchair into the back seats of the car enabling a passenger to sit in the front. Finally I show my methods of protecting the car to avoid scratches.
I hope the video proves helpful :)

Huge thanks my friend! I have the same chair as you do and I just didn’t understand the technique to easily get in and out of a four door car unassisted. Two door is way easier, as you know, but I’ve been looking at wagons (in the us) and I just struggled to get get any fluidity with the B-pillar in the way. I’m going Monday to check out a wagon and I’m going to try your technique, so thanks for making the video. You are much braver than I am with the white interior.

Cheers Chris, and I'm glad the video has given you some ideas. Yeah I'd have spec'd a black interior but had the chance to buy this car so went with it. Not regretting the white at all - so many towels in the car that it stays clean anyway

Nice guy, nice wheels, nice car! I’m L1/inc. After 10 years post sci developed arthritis in my shoulders so can no longer push. Spinal unit said it’s quite common in women. I miss using a manual chair.

Nice car. I'm also a para and I drive a 16 audi s6 and use presets also and I lean mine on the door for one and I spin it to the door jamb by my shoulder and I carry through. It is easier on a 2dr for sure.

Hi Sam thanks for the videos. I'm a T5 complete 58 yr old male. Your vehicle transfers have taught me so much. Can you please do a review of your Panthera chair as I really want one. As it's only been a year since my kitesurfing accident I want to know if its too tippy . Thanks again for taking the time to make the videos. You've made a difference.

Hi Craig, thanks so much for the kind comments. Really glad to have helped you out. Yes sure, I'll do a review on it soon compared to my TiLite TRA. In a nutshell over got mine set up to be pretty stable, but it's a super responsive chair and easy to flick the castors or back wheel balance. Highly recommend you getting one! I'd you need more information then feel free to drop me an email at lifeonwheels@yahoo.com

Thanks for the technique that you showed. My question is how much a gap is there from the edge of the car seat to the edge of the wheelchair seat? For me if the gap is big of I cannot do the transfer that way. I would kind of fall in the gap before I reach the seat. My car is Toyota Yaris with 4 doors and wheelchair Panthera U Light 2(I know the Panthera X is super light but pricy too). The gap from car seat to wheelchair is around 30cm or 12 inch which is big. I know every car transfer is different. I am T9. When I transfer in, I grab the handle on the car with my left hand, and grab the top of the door with my right hand. My left leg is in the car while my right leg is out. Then I pull myself in with my left hand pulling me in. I get out of the car similarly by pulling myself out with my right hand on the top of the door.
The biggest problem I face is when I transfer out of the car to the wheelchair if the ground is sloping or a hilly place. What happen is that the wheelchair runs off or the front of the wheelchair goes up because the wheelchair is being squeezed by the car and the door. Even if the tarmac is completely flat with no sloping, the wheelchair still moves around. The wheelchair also scratches the car. I would love to learn your technique. I don't know if I need a car with a low seating position like yours. My toyota yaris is high. Can you me pointers as to how you handle the gap. Thank you

Good question there Techman Mojo. I'd say the gap between wheelchair and seat when I transfer in is easily over 30cm, but that shouldn't cause a problem. Most ideal is a seat which is somewhere near the same level as the wheelchair as it makes the transfer in and out a bit easier.
From what you've written I'd suggest your technique of holding up high is the problem. By having one hand on the wheelchair as you transfer will put weight through the wheels which, assuming locked, will prevent roll-aways. I find putting a leg into the car first makes the transfer harder, and as such mine stay beneath me, outside the car. They also help with swinging my bum across into the seat, too.
The technique I use is to hold the front right corner of the wheelchair with my right hand, and I make a fist with my left hand and place it around the middle front. Have a look at my other video showing a more detailed explanation of how I do it (albeit into the passenger seat, but the same) ua-cam.com/video/BFPGiqsSw5g/v-deo.html
Give that a go and see what you think? With your hold point lower down you'll gain more control to move your bum across the gap. Try it with a slide board at first if necessary but I promise it will be easier for you once you get used to it

Thank you for the detailed reply. I appreciate. I watched the video where you do the transfer into the passenger seat. I also watched this video again with the panthera x chair.
My observation is that your car seat is slightly lower than your wheelchair which makes transferring into the vehicle lot easier. If the wheelchair and the car seat are more or less at the same level, then transferring into and out of car can be done despite the big gap. For example, my wheelchair and my shower chair are generally of similar heights, and transferring onto either one is very easy. I am aware that one has to lower his head down as he swings the bum onto the chair or seat. It is a technique I use a lot in all transfers.
My car seat is higher than my wheelchair. That makes it harder to attempt transferring into the car using your technique. But I have since succeeded transferring into the car without using the car door anymore. I grab the car handle with my left hand, and put my fist in the middle of the wheelchair and pull myself into the car. When transferring from the car to the wheelchair, the front right edge of the wheelchair feels too low with the car seat being higher than the wheelchair hence my reliance on the car door when getting out of the car.
I will practise a lot. One technique I want to practise more is when transferring out of the car with my left hand on the car grab handle and my right hand on the near wheel of the wheelchair. I will see how I progress.
However, I may have to consider changing the car, and getting a car with seat a similar height as the wheelchair. Thank you again.

Ah your car seat is higher than your wheelchair? I have another video for that... watch this one: ua-cam.com/video/leajORN3Hhg/v-deo.html
Your technique of using the car grab handle is good for higher vehicles- I've used it to get in and out of a range rover before, and minivans, but if the seat isn't mega high then the technique I show in the link works a treat.
With transfers out of the car, I find it easier to have my trailing hand on the car seat right beside my bum to lift my weight up and push myself out of the car rather than holding the handle. I feel it gives me a lot more control over the transfer

Why did you switch from the 2 series to the M3?? My brother has spinabifida and he is looking to get a M4 coupe, but he also is looking for other options. The 2 series is a coupe and the M3 is a sedan, so what would you recommend? Does it make a huge difference? Because from what I know, coupes usually have a larger cabin than sedans, and especially the M4 because I’ve been in one multiple times and they are comfortable. but I don’t want a coupe to be his only option since I’m helping him with his whole buying process. Thank you for the help 🙏🏼

To be honest I wanted an M3 and was happy to sacrifice the easier transferring in and out of the 2 door 2 series for the more exciting car. Cabin wise there's no real difference - the same room once your in, and that's comparing my old M240i, M3 and a friend's M4. The biggest difference is 2 door vs 4 door. The 2 door affords so much more room to transfer in and out in the wheelchair compared to a 4 door, but with a tweak to the technique it's perfectly doable, and it wouldn't for me be a huge deciding factor in choosing a new car, but we're all different and have differing abilities. I'd suggest visiting some dealerships, take some towels with you to protect the cars and try transferring with your friend into some potential cars? The M4 if that's what your friend wants is about the friendliest car for transfers as the door gives a large opening, and really opens up wide

Hi ya, just a quick question regarding your hand controls, could you please tell me what hand controls you are using and also has the steering column been put to its highest position with the column pulled out to its furthest position?, thank you and thanks for the videos.

    • @sam-lifeonwheels9861
      @sam-lifeonwheels9861  5 років тому

Hi Angela, they’re Cowal Mobility hand controls (many firms use them for supply). It’s a curved leather finish hand control. Have a look at their website for lots of good pics and installations as mine is just one of many types available, but highly recommended.
      www.cowalmobility.co.uk
The steering column is locked once they’re fitted, but ideally is adjusted to you as the driver at the time of fitting. I can’t recall exactly where in the adjustment range it ended up, but was positioned properly to suit me.
      Hope that helps?
      Sam

      Hi Sam
Thanks for that, the reason for asking is that my husband will be ordering his 3 series touring on Wednesday and has used cowel hand controls for the last 30 years and the steering column position is always dictated my how cowels have manufactured them, be it column to its highest position and out most, as there is not much room to have the column adjusted to suit. Were you present for your install? Do have the name of your installer to see if and how they managed to change the standard position please?
      Thanks again, Angela
