After looking on eBay for three months, I found the 2005-2011 Crown Victoria cruise control steering wheel and even the color matched my airbag. This steering wheel had a date code of 0612, which I understand is June 2012. The date code on the cruise control switches was 2021. Sadly, Ford no longer manufacturers that steering wheel. I had the local Ford dealer turn the cruise control on in the PCM a couple of months ago when I had the transmission serviced. Today, I finally had time to tackle the job. It took a little while to get the airbag off (those hard to reach springs that hold the airbag on): 30 minutes to an hour. After that it was smooth sailing doing the rest of the job. Cruise control now works beautifully!! Thank you for this excellent video and well done.
Thank you, it took 1.5 hours or so but your tips definitely helped. My springs were basically gummed up and I had to keep pushing on them 10-15 times before they’d release the clip. I used a long shank 1/8” round punch
Thank you for the video!! My '08 CVPI's clockspring just went up and I've wanted to do this upgrade for a while. As long as I can source a wheel in the next week or so that isn't an arm and a leg, I'm going to give this a shot. I checked with two of my dealers near me. The one said they couldn't do it because of not being supported by Ford, but the other one said they would do it, but they were on the fence about it. To me it sounded more along the lines of whether they had a tech that knew how to do this, lol.
Thank you so much! It took a little bit of fiddling, but I finally got it and I'm very happy. I just used the software that came with the tool and it worked pretty well in this application. Thanks again for the inspiration and tutorial!
a masterpiece for me, thank you jack, at least it's make me more sure about adding a "DIY" cruise control to your car, is there any general cruise control kit for any car? just guessing and hoping, so i'll be able to add my car one of it :D.. cheers
This video is great! About to order my scan tool from amazon. The stealerships in SoCal all said they don't preform programming work like this. Well one said they could try but no guarantees. One even told me it was impossible to have cruise control on a non factory cruise car. One question, what version of windows are you running? Will this work on windows 8.1? Thank you.
quick question about rear window controls. switches at rear doors are inactive. windows work from master switch. is there a preference setting in one of the modules that switches these controls on and off? thanks for the video!
No. They are probably disabled at the switch or there may be a grey connector in the b pillar that is disconnected. Have you taken off the door panel to look and see if they are plugged in
So I’ve tried this 2-3 times now. I have a CC matching color wheel. It came from a 2006 SAP Vic. My 2011 CVPI takes the Cruise control program but now give me a check engine code that is P0581 . To my knowledge it’s all plug and play like you explained but my dealer is claiming I am missing a cruise control switch. They are like 20 bucks but I can not find where they are supposed to be located, but is it also possible that the switches on the steering wheel itself are causing the codes? Everytime I hit on it doesn’t work and every time I hit off it goes into limp power and misfires. Any advice?
The code is set when the PCM detects a fault in a specific circuit within the cruise control system. P0581 usually points to a problem in the cruise control switch located on your steering wheel but could also be a problem with the redundant brake switch. It's possible that the dealer is correct and the 2011 needed another switch. I'm not sure. In this video this was a 2008 and you saw it live
ForScan does have the ability to edit as-built data now. I just don't know what bit/byte to change to enable cruise control and can't find that info online
This isn't about editing as built data.... Forscan has always been able to do that. This is writing a whole different flash to the PCM. Forscan can not do it unfortunately.
@@JackofAllMasterofNone Oh I thought editing as-bully data reflashed the whole module anyway? That’s what it seemed like when I enabled RKE and turned off the TPMS system
No. You are not just changing data bits in a module. This is a whole other side of programming. You are actually writing the engine control strategy and forscan can not do that. There are some high end scantools that can though like some from Launch and SnapOn
Good ol' Ford thinking/ cheapskates. Most new cars 2005+ came standard with cruise control but not the Crown Vic! It would have cost them probably $4.99 to have added CC from the factory.
They could have put all kinds of $5 parts on them but they didn't because they're FLEET CARS, and the primary concern of fleet buyers isn't driver comfort, it's COST. My 2011 Police Interceptor cost $21,100.00 new. or $25K in 2021. $25K for a brand new four-door V8 sedan with a 12-year track-record. Not by adding BS options like cruise control that 95% of your buyers will never use.
Thanks for posting, great information. I'd like to do this. I see a couple of SoCal folks saying the Ford dealers won't do the PCM flash. Maybe related , maybe not, but to pass a smog check the PCM can't have any 'tunes' loaded. Don't know exactly what this means or how the PCM indicates this. Don't know if the reflash to enable the cruise will trip me up on a smog check. Can you point me in the right direction?
Quick question boss I seen both this and your RKE video and was wondering can FDRS do both cruise control and the keyless entry or will I need to get for FDRS for the cruise control and Forscan for the keyless entry? Car in question is a 2010 P7B car. Thanks, Brett
I'm not sure if FDRS will even work on a 2010. Probably need IDS for the steering wheel. For the keyless entry it would be way easier to use forscan and it's free. Might be possible through IDS by manually configuring as built data but forscan is the way to go with that.
Is two hours enough patience?? LOL, for the life of me I cannot pop the bottom two springs out, no matter how much I wiggle, pry at the airbag and apply pressure to the spring. Any advice?
I'm not going to lie. It's very tricky. I'm sure Ford makes a special tool for the job. My only advice is what I said in the video. If you have the new wheel, practice on it so you can see what you are trying to accomplish.
