Happens in North America all the time. All they have to do is change the design slightly and it becomes pointless to litigate. It's almost impossible to prove in a case like this. On top of that, if the blade retainer and blades themselves are not proprietary then all they are claiming is a folding design and general handle shape. Not worth the court costs.

I'm really glad you made this video. This had to be said. I see guys buying knockoffs and trying to say it's just as good as the original and it just isn't. Buying a knock off hurts the original maker. It degrades the value of their product. What's bad is sometimes someone buys something thinking it's the real thing and it breaks, or doesn't hold an edge, falls apart, something... and they think it's the manufacturer and all it is it's a knock off. Buyer gear from reputable sellers. New or used look into who you're buying from.

Well there are two sides, those who agree with what you said and those who don’t. Personally I don’t make enough to be able to make a purchase a micro tech utx-85, for $200 and up. But I still love the look, so here I am owning a knock off for $37. And am more happy then I could be about my product. I’ll stop buying knock offs, when products aren’t $200-400.

I cant really prove it, but I was one of the original backers of the 3Coil Crane and Puna. there’s the Nitecore NTK 05 which is also similar. Not sure if it was an even earlier product or also is at least inspired by this one. However, I own it and find it incredibly useful. Opening letters, cutting strings, getting out splinters. It’s perfect for all this and other tiny cutting tasks and scalpel blades are dirt cheap. Its retention is ridiculous and I never had any worries about it’s safety.
I do agree about knock offs though.

This is outrageous. Thanks for bringing that up, Taylor.
I was reading some of the comments, and here's something to add to the discussion: Why was 3Coil seeking production in China, when that could be easily produced locally? Exactly: to increase profit and/or marketability. That, my friends, is called capitalism. Whether you like it or not. But nobody here is blaming the UK designers for preventing UK or European specialized workers to make a living. Why?
I am not here defending Chinese companies for something everybody knows they do. All I'm saying is that's easy to bash China, Mexico, Romania or other places where labor is cheap for something that is standard practice in the industrialized world since the beginning: the knock off. The difference is, big companies have legal departments to tell them exactly what they need to change in the design to avoid legal trouble. Examples: the Hamilton Khaki Field watch or the Omega Moon watch. Most of the watch manufacturing companies in the world have a model that copies those two designs, obviously for a cheaper price. I understand it might not be exactly a replica, nor the design files were stolen completely, but still is a cheaper copy, made by less-paid workers.
Now, are we trashing Spyderco for having part of their production outsourced to Taiwan? Should we only buy American? Let's give up our iPhones, then.
Once more, I think it's outrageous what happened in this case, and I'm not by any means defending the Chinese company that did it - this was a rip off, not a knock off, and they had bad intentions from the get go. What I'm saying is every problem has different angles. Again, whether you like ir or not.

I have a Titainer scalpel. Bought from the uk from a supplier i trust, the fact it does not lock makes it legal carry here so thats why I purchased this design.
Had I known that it was a clone of a premium knife from a small kickstarter I would have never purchased it. I totally agree with what you are saying too. Really shady practice with very little regulations across borders with different rules. Also I never saw the kickstarter for it.
Totally agree with the scary part. The detents are however very firm even after 6 months of use. I carry it in my pocket daily with a long capsule attatched with spare blades. that makes it a little more comfortable/safer to use.
Changing a scalpel blade on a knife this size is not for the faint hearted though.
I will say to anyone that is interested in one to swerve buying one. There are alternatives out there anyway. My heart goes out to 3Coil. I would have given them my money had I known. Lets hope they get a great result in their legal battle and chalk up a win big enough so they can carry on with the good work they were doing.
I will look further into 3coil products and see if theres something i can purchase to make up for the loss in some tiny way.

It doesn't have a locking mechanism, due to law restrictions. Without locking mechanism, it doesn't count as a weapon, so it can be worn as a keychain knife pretty much everywhere in the EU.
I just bought it and it is at least ideal for opening packages and removing duct tape, without risk of scratching the goods. With replacement blades from Swann-Morton it fullfills my expectations perfectly, the included blade is a bit on the dull side.

Dunno if you ever found out, but in the event that you haven’t yet, (this being a 3 month old video) I found the 3coil crane and got one for my wife about the time this video first got released. (She’s a mortician and collects scalpels) anyways, they must’ve figured something out. Good on ya for putting the info out there.

I could be completely wrong, please correct if I am, but, from what I've read patents have to be logged in china as they dont recognize the point of origins patent. That's how they were doing iPhones, so they dont actually have to change the design. Of it's not patented in china, then it dont count.

Hey I bought a titanium mechanical pencil from Titaner in 2015. I really liked it because it had a cap and was very small. I believe they sold very few of them, but does anyone know who they stole the design from so I can buy the original? I lost mine.

Glad to see you made this video.
Bootleg trash hurts the innovators and designers on the edc community. If we want this small niche of ours to keep evolving and improving, ripoffs shouldnt be tolerated.
Makers than dont respect the work needed to design a product dont deserve respect.

I got the crane from 3coil, great EDC for a English guy like my self and would definitely recommend it.

I know they're not necessarily everyone's cup of tea but, given that this is off the table for the time being, any suggestions for similar scalpel-based tools?

This is so unfortunate. I love exacto knives and have been looking for something with #11 blades. I prefer them to utility knives. But its hard to find something compact and locking.

This same thing has happened in the Vape industry many times with Chinese companies. They contract to produce a product then delay over and over then suddenly release the product under their name.

Yes I remember last year that happened, I think it was with VooPoo and Vapor Trail Channel if I remember correctly.
