Rebuilt my dad's 026 2 years ago. My first rebuild. Made a couple of mistakes but managed not to destroy it! Lots of new oem parts. Don't feel comfortable doing machine work yet but did a base gasket delete and muffler mod. Saws been running really good since then. Really caught the chainsaw bug with that saw. I have several saws now and have gotten obsessive about keeping clean and filling chains. It's become quite a fun hobby. I don't burn much wood so to justify my addiction I'll drop and buck up a couple of trees on my property. Then I'll post free firewood on marketplace. Once it's gone I'll drop a couple more. It's been a lot of fun!
Thats awesone to hear and hope it helps folks. I love getting to go harvest man glitter my daughter calls it. Living around the city I am always looking for the chance to cut wood local and help others out that don't have a need for a good saw. Its a family fun time when we get a local tree to clean up bring home for splitting and stacking. It's great to be able to share firewood when power is out and folks need heat.
My vote is for a basic hop-up. Even that real make it a real ripper! As long as the bar isn't too long. I thought I added this commit right when video dropped, but I actually texted it to my wife. It confused her....😅😅😅
Just a good running firewood saw. Dependable that is what we need. It would be an excellent teaching session on how to rebuild an everyday regular normal saw. Looking forward.
I am so grateful for all of these videos. It's been a tough year and it's nice to think of pleasant things. I can empathize with those long commutes. I recently quit a job that I was commuting 110km each way. The final straw for me was when the boss wanted me to pull a trans out of a 94 ford. when I got there, he had set it up on blocks. Only these weren't normal blocks. They were rusty propane tanks that he pulled out of a scrap pile. I don't know what I will do next, but it certainly won't be getting crushed by someone else's junk truck. In the meantime, I have a few saws to play with and an old Tecumseh lawnmower that my buddy got for 3 bucks at an auction. Surprisingly, parts are still available. My vote is to build a reliable tool out of the 026. Toys can be fun but work saws are better.
I'm a firewood guy with a small (very small) firewood business. I've been an old soul, now sneaking up on 50 I'm also becoming old. I like chuggers, drop the saw on the buck and take a sip of an approved beverage with the other hand. When watching a fight I like the fighter that brakes the other down with body shots, not the flash knockout. Oh, and show me something I can do to the saw, and more importantly fix myself, thanks!
I've just fixed what I have for decades. I'll never deck or port or build a pipe. I just need my reliable old stuff to work. I love what you do though. Always fun to watch ya.

I would build a good work saw that pulls I found I prefer a reliable work saw over a race saw that’s hard to keep in tune but what ever you choose or the group you will build a great saw. Thanks for sharing with us

I’d say keep it simple. Warm but not so warm that those of us who don’t realize how ignorant we still might be would blow it up. An all day all weather (within reason) firewood machine that’s going to hold a tune well. Or pick someone you know a little better before you build it and build it to suit them.

I would like to see a build that is more in-between, something most anybody could do! I have ported my Stihl ms 391 and had great results! I have to thank you and the ironhorse for your informative videos, encouragement and inspiration!! Can't wait to see how this one turns out! I want to do more porting and this size saw is more available and affordable where I live!
Go all-in. If it's worth doing, it's worth doing it right. You don't need to port the snot out of it; don't turn it up to striped ape speed. Just do what you do to any strong firewood saw.

I hear ya with the rain I live in NW Iowa just north of Spencer and we just got hit hard. Been watching for years keep it up I've learned a lot from you and the saw community
my dad had an 034 Av from 1984ish. I think it had around 56cc. He loved that saw and years ago he took it to a local shop to get it basically restored to new to give to my brother who was starting a landscaping business but after about 6 months of waiting for it, we called the shop and apparently it magically disappeared. He wasn't happy about it obviously and hes over it by now im sure but i've always wanted to find a similar saw from that era to put in his hands again. I'm a purist so restore that beauty.
WOW the timing here is incredible. Was visiting my son who lives on a paper mill forested mountain in WA state. On 6/15 he pulls out a mint 026 that his father in-law gave him. It ran good but sluggish to rev up. Pulled the muffler to check the cylinder and it was perfect. I decided the exhaust was too restrictive so I modified the muffler, what a difference. It screams and pulls much better now, my kid loves it. I can not imagine how a Tinman's saw will run. I am very interested in this build. I vote for a build that produces the most power without the need for a lathe while keeping it a reliable firewood saw. However, I do have relatives that could cut the base if needed. Thank you
Build it all the way, make it pull hard! I just finished rebuilding and porting my very first saw, my dad's old dead Stihl 026. Watched a ton of your videos to learn before I started, did everything with a dremel, flex attachment, and carbide bit but no 90 degree head. Turned out great and it's a screamer.

Because of you , i have started fiddling with saws, nothing too mad, just try to improve on what i have, so a good grunty saw with a few more rpm gets my vote. (And i bought a right angle grinder but not used it yet)
I think Tinman is the trusted voice for many guys learning to build. I like his approach based on his airflow background. I also like that here plays with many brands and keeps it all fun.

Hoping the auction went well friend🤞 Just scored a mean woodsplitter on an auction myself😁 I think you answered your own question at the end there my man, so I'm rooting for a mix build. I recon thats how you make the most enjoyable saw possible. Not to hot so it can run a bit dirty with an 80% ish sharp chain after hitting some dirt/sand in the log pile. But hot enough so you'll want to fine tune it and improve your filing to try and hopefully beat your friends with the new auto tunes🤞😎

My vote goes to the every-man's work saw that has a little more pull but starts easy and runs cool and smooth! Around here we mostly cut large Sitka Spruce and I generally run a smaller saw for the size of wood (59 cc) - like you put it so well, sharpening skills are where it's at!!
My 026 I bought sight unseen and the OEM cylinder was trashed!! So I replaced it with a Meteor big bore for the 026. It runs great and should be all the saw a person that just does occasional firewood cutting and yard work. I would do a base gasket delete muffler mod and rebuild the stock carburetor clean up the intake and exhaust and be Happy 😎
Time will never slow down now that you have a little one Tinman! .....I say do the usual to the saw.....base gasket delete, timing advance and muffler mod....don't know if there's any meat to take off the piston but if there is you could lighten that up some......Love the content!
Got a couple of 026s with damaged exhaust port roofs. Think the previous owner must have used a screwdriver through the exhaust port as a piston stop! The damage to the port has damaged the piston on both saws. Interested to see what you do here as I'm hoping that raising the exhaust roof enough to remove the damage will keep within reasonable timing numbers. Ideally looking to save the original cylinders if I can to save a buck! If I can't raise the exhaust enough it would be interesting to see if I could remove the damage by cutting the deck and the squish band as well. The cylinders are junk anyway so I can't make them any worse!
I just finished turning 2 different 026's into 1. I just put them back to stock but I would be interested in seeing how some simple changes can change the saw. My vote is to keep it simple, base gasket delete, muffler mod. The stuff that guys like me would feel comfortable taking on. I'm not at a stage to give porting a try just yet.

I would like to see a work saw build. Easy start, easy run. Happy medium between torque and RPM. I love my 562 MK II, just a bit of a pain to run efficiently. No bog, no chain stoppage. Especially when I'm getting tired.
I have my 026 for the past 25 years and it’s still running like a charm. I cut about 15 cords per year and it is still awesome. I would like you to make the 026 a screamer with high RPM. It would be interesting to see how it runs. Thanks for all your videos. Stay safe.

I think a base gasket delete and a simple muffler modification would be perfect. They are nice saws, perfect for a little upgrade but keep the reliability without chronic tuning. Just my .02. Going to be fun to watch.
Thanks Tinman for all of your advice. I would never hotrod a gift saw but if I had another saw I Would take more aggressive action with my Husky 460 Rancher that I spoke to you about a few weeks ago.so far my gasket delete and the muffler mod has been a huge increase in grunt and fun.

Make it a solid runner that’s reliable and easy to start. Somebody that’s going to be cutting firewood doesn’t need a fire breathing tempermental hard to tune chainsaw. If it pulls a 20” bar easily with a decent chain Bob’s your uncle!! Time truly flies brother!! Little Charlie is going to be negotiating everything soon enough and will be graduating High School tomorrow.
I’m pretty excited your doing a 50cc saw I mainly use my 4910 so I might try to emulate what your doing here on it. I think you make a good work saw with a solid muffler,probably base gasket delete , open the transfers a bit and massage the intake and exhaust just a wee bit. I would also love to see you build a echo 4910 at some point, something to rival Charles briscos
@TM haven't messed with my 026 yet..dealing with relocating and double knee replacement in the works. Forces me to not do what I enjoy for awhile. Thanks for this video
nice tat tinman first time i noticed, mine is little used i hoged the muffler and it is awesome for anything less that 16 or 18 , i would say power and longevity, and by power i meen speed with a sharp chain on a stihl

Thanks for the 026 vids, Tinman. Interesting series on this saw. While I have plenty of bigger saws to use, I have several 026's and one I run an 18" bar with a .325 oregon #22 chain, an 8 pin sprocket and a mod on the stock muffler. Its a fantastic cheap upgrade for a quick limbing tool and maybe 8-10" rounds but a simple increase in the grunt would make it all that much better and a far more all around saw while keeping it durable. My 2 cents.
I bought my 026 new almost 30 years ago. I am enjoying the build. It has been my primary saw and only work was a carb rebuild maybe 6 years ago. I would like to see a freshen up and maybe a mill and gasket delete to see what performance improvements are made. I have my 440 magnum for the grunt work. I inherited a rancher that I need to tear into. It is heavily used ..... some abuse lol

Did one of these recently really like how it turned out. I removed base gasket, opened up lower transfers just a touch. Added touch of intake and raised exhaust by 3 degrees. Most of work was done to piston. It's fast but as you said gotta let it do the work.
I love your comments on learning to file first then worry about the saw. I really am enjoying the smaller builds as I own a 261 and 362. I would really love to hear your thoughts on like a 362 strato saw and how to go about porting them. I haven't really seen or heard much on the strato saws so I think that topic is worthy of consideration. Keep working hard and being kind!! I love the content you put out. I vote in favor of a gruntier version of the 026.
Hey Tinman I'd like to see a reliable work saw build. I think the 260 would be best suited to a tree service guy/ climber because they are a really good medium size saw for blocking down trees that are too big for the top handle and handy on the ground. Probably a bit too small for a firewood saw like you mentioned. Might be another good one to send down to Caleb.
The infrastructure is definitely different than Canada's. They run lighter loads on their semi trucks down there. They don't usually load over 50 000kg on a super bee. Where as in Canada it's 63500kg. That 13500 kg does make a difference on road wear. I don't mind when highways have detours. Just means you get to see stuff you wouldn't have. Back on topic. Base gasket delete and transfer work would be great for that little saw.
Make it so it holds RPM in the cut and has a little more crack. Muffler mod, no pipe. Ps. My 5 year old daughter says she wants to clean your 026 😂. She is helping build an 034 super and loves scraping the crud off parts.
Great work, love the channel 👌 My 026c (toolless chain adjuster) is mildly ported and runs way better than stock. Ported it 12 years ago and it still puts in sterling service. Needs a chain though 😁
So when I seen that you got this saw and you said you were going to port it I got super excited because I now have an 026 that my buddy and his dad gave to me for free because it hadn’t ran in probably 10 years. I had been offering to buy off them for years to because I wanted it. I got it replaced some things and it’s been running great since. Did have a few issues with it that I actually tried reaching out to you about but never heard back and I ended up figuring out the issue. I even put a video of me running it on my channel. But since I’ve had it and had it running and did a bit of cutting with it I always felt like it was missing something even with as great as it cut already. Imo it is missing out on a bunch of torque like you said in the video. It needs more. So for me I’d build the saw for as much torque as it’s safely capable of making while keeping it an easy quick starter and easy tuner. Maybe add just a touch more rpm if possible as well. That’s how I want to build mine when I get around to it. I’ve always wanted mine to be able to pull a 24” bar a chain and to be able to just absolutely lean on it in the cut when I want to. Cosmetically I’ll be adding dual dogs to it and an 044 full wrap handle. Really hope to see you go this route with yours and make it an absolute work horse so that I have some videos to follow when I do mine. Wish you the best Tinman 🤘.
Hiya bud I'm so glad you are doing the 026 build I often thought I wish he would do an 026, if you've got 2 lots of casings would it be to much to ask if you did 1 balls out wild one and the other something with good grunt and a general work horse that runs a happy medium of tuning across the board so to speak
I think your BG delete, pipe, and clean up the flow is perfect. I have a 026, and that’s exactly what I’d do with mine… I’d be able to use a bit longer bar, and still pull the chain in a grunt. The average guy doesn’t need a tweaks saw.
I absolutely love this saw i have 4 red lever 2 are metal handle pros and 1 260! I would love to see the kitchen sink!! Have a 550 mk1 with 96 exhaust its currently my favorite saw would love 026 be that again!
I have an 026 pro that im trying to restore, kinda want to have it ported but can't decide. I almost think I'll just swap the carb out for a 2 screw carb and muffler mod it and see how it goes. The internals are perfect just been sitting for a few years. It was kept in a case so its not bad just filthy! Thought about using it for a little bigger climbing saw too. We'll see in the meantime ill be watching this build!
I already have an 026. These are great saws but if you do a base gasket delete, widen the exhaust port and clean up the transfers, I don't think you'll have any issues pulling a 20" bar and chain. I can't imagine what a dome piston and intake port timing adjustment would do for one of these. The 026 is the best saw I've used for firewood. (Although I do have fond memories of a hopped up blue Homelite, the 026 is lighter)

I bought a new ms260 in 2008, cut 3cords + every year. Still running like new! Amsoil saber since it came home👌
Just to increase the power a little bit but still a light saw would probably fit a larger audience. 👍👍

I always prefer reliability over insanity. Big builds are fun but they aren't my choice to work with.

Low exhaust roof and make it nice and torquey! Guys love to dog in so I doubt they'll want a really peaky saw

I think you answered your own question at the end there my man, so I'm rooting for a mix build. I recon thats how you make the most enjoyable saw possible. Not to hot so it can run a bit dirty with an 80% ish sharp chain after hitting some dirt/sand in the log pile. But hot enough so you'll want to fine tune it and improve your filing to try and hopefully beat your friends with the new auto tunes🤞😎
Ran an 029 for years for firewood. Had an issue with it, so I picked up an 026 to use, I hardly pick up the 029 anymore! Great saw!
Hey Tinman, greetings from Kodiak Island! I don't comment often but truly appreciate your content and have especially enjoyed this auction saw series - glad to know there is more coming! My vote goes to the every-man's work saw that has a little more pull but starts easy and runs cool and smooth! Around here we mostly cut large Sitka Spruce and I generally run a smaller saw for the size of wood (59 cc) - like you put it so well, sharpening skills are where it's at!!
My 026 I bought sight unseen and the OEM cylinder was trashed!! So I replaced it with a Meteor big bore for the 026. It runs great and should be all the saw a person that just does occasional firewood cutting and yard work. I would do a base gasket delete muffler mod and rebuild the stock carburetor clean up the intake and exhaust and be Happy 😎
Time will never slow down now that you have a little one Tinman! .....I say do the usual to the saw.....base gasket delete, timing advance and muffler mod....don't know if there's any meat to take off the piston but if there is you could lighten that up some......Love the content!
Got a couple of 026s with damaged exhaust port roofs. Think the previous owner must have used a screwdriver through the exhaust port as a piston stop! The damage to the port has damaged the piston on both saws. Interested to see what you do here as I'm hoping that raising the exhaust roof enough to remove the damage will keep within reasonable timing numbers. Ideally looking to save the original cylinders if I can to save a buck! If I can't raise the exhaust enough it would be interesting to see if I could remove the damage by cutting the deck and the squish band as well. The cylinders are junk anyway so I can't make them any worse!
I've been on fishing trips to Kenora and Manaki several times. I love the drive around Lake of the Woods. Absolutely beautiful.

Been running a hopped up 026 cutting cedar saw logs for 15 years . Pulls a 24" Cannon Bar with full chisel chain . Best $$$ i ever spent .

I just finished turning 2 different 026's into 1. I just put them back to stock but I would be interested in seeing how some simple changes can change the saw. My vote is to keep it simple, base gasket delete, muffler mod. The stuff that guys like me would feel comfortable taking on. I'm not at a stage to give porting a try just yet.
I would love to see a reliable firewood powersaw with occasional falling and great snap and pull.

I love my 562 MK II, just a bit of a pain to run efficiently. No bog, no chain stoppage. Especially when I'm getting tired.
I have my 026 for the past 25 years and it’s still running like a charm. I cut about 15 cords per year and it is still awesome. I would like you to make the 026 a screamer with high RPM. It would be interesting to see how it runs. Thanks for all your videos. Stay safe.

I think a base gasket delete and a simple muffler modification would be perfect. They are nice saws, perfect for a little upgrade but keep the reliability without chronic tuning. Just my .02. Going to be fun to watch.
Thanks Tinman for all of your advice. I would never hotrod a gift saw but if I had another saw I Would take more aggressive action with my Husky 460 Rancher that I spoke to you about a few weeks ago.so far my gasket delete and the muffler mod has been a huge increase in grunt and fun.

Make it a solid runner that’s reliable and easy to start. Somebody that’s going to be cutting firewood doesn’t need a fire breathing tempermental hard to tune chainsaw. If it pulls a 20” bar easily with a decent chain Bob’s your uncle!! Time truly flies brother!! Little Charlie is going to be negotiating everything soon enough and will be graduating High School tomorrow.
I’m pretty excited your doing a 50cc saw I mainly use my 4910 so I might try to emulate what your doing here on it. I think you make a good work saw with a solid muffler,probably base gasket delete , open the transfers a bit and massage the intake and exhaust just a wee bit. I would also love to see you build a echo 4910 at some point, something to rival Charles briscos
In my honest opinion I believe you should make it grunty. Give it the torque it deserves/needs to be a true firewood saw.
@TM haven't messed with my 026 yet..dealing with relocating and double knee replacement in the works. Forces me to not do what I enjoy for awhile. Thanks for this video
nice tat tinman first time i noticed, mine is little used i hoged the muffler and it is awesome for anything less that 16 or 18 , i would say power and longevity, and by power i meen speed with a sharp chain on a stihl
Great video tinman. Its been awhile since ive been on UA-cam, like you said, time is flying by and having a daughter to share it will just makes it go faster and more busy but i love it. Im excited to see what you do with the ol stihl. 026’s are good old workhorses. Keep em coming brother 🤙🏼
Thanks for the 026 vids, Tinman. Interesting series on this saw. While I have plenty of bigger saws to use, I have several 026's and one I run an 18" bar with a .325 oregon #22 chain, an 8 pin sprocket and a mod on the stock muffler. Its a fantastic cheap upgrade for a quick limbing tool and maybe 8-10" rounds but a simple increase in the grunt would make it all that much better and a far more all around saw while keeping it durable. My 2 cents.

I bought my 026 new almost 30 years ago. I am enjoying the build. It has been my primary saw and only work was a carb rebuild maybe 6 years ago. I would like to see a freshen up and maybe a mill and gasket delete to see what performance improvements are made.
I have my 440 magnum for the grunt work. I inherited a rancher that I need to tear into. It is heavily used ..... some abuse lol

Did one of these recently really like how it turned out. I removed base gasket, opened up lower transfers just a touch. Added touch of intake and raised exhaust by 3 degrees. Most of work was done to piston. It's fast but as you said gotta let it do the work.

I love your comments on learning to file first then worry about the saw. I really am enjoying the smaller builds as I own a 261 and 362. I would really love to hear your thoughts on like a 362 strato saw and how to go about porting them. I haven't really seen or heard much on the strato saws so I think that topic is worthy of consideration. Keep working hard and being kind!! I love the content you put out. I vote in favor of a gruntier version of the 026.

Hey Tinman I'd like to see a reliable work saw build. I think the 260 would be best suited to a tree service guy/ climber because they are a really good medium size saw for blocking down trees that are too big for the top handle and handy on the ground. Probably a bit too small for a firewood saw like you mentioned. Might be another good one to send down to Caleb.
The infrastructure is definitely different than Canada's. They run lighter loads on their semi trucks down there. They don't usually load over 50 000kg on a super bee. Where as in Canada it's 63500kg. That 13500 kg does make a difference on road wear. I don't mind when highways have detours. Just means you get to see stuff you wouldn't have.
Back on topic. Base gasket delete and transfer work would be great for that little saw.
Make it so it holds RPM in the cut and has a little more crack. Muffler mod, no pipe. Ps. My 5 year old daughter says she wants to clean your 026 😂. She is helping build an 034 super and loves scraping the crud off parts.

My 026c (toolless chain adjuster) is mildly ported and runs way better than stock. Ported it 12 years ago and it still puts in sterling service. Needs a chain though 😁
So when I seen that you got this saw and you said you were going to port it I got super excited because I now have an 026 that my buddy and his dad gave to me for free because it hadn’t ran in probably 10 years. I had been offering to buy off them for years to because I wanted it. I got it replaced some things and it’s been running great since. Did have a few issues with it that I actually tried reaching out to you about but never heard back and I ended up figuring out the issue. I even put a video of me running it on my channel. But since I’ve had it and had it running and did a bit of cutting with it I always felt like it was missing something even with as great as it cut already. Imo it is missing out on a bunch of torque like you said in the video. It needs more. So for me I’d build the saw for as much torque as it’s safely capable of making while keeping it an easy quick starter and easy tuner. Maybe add just a touch more rpm if possible as well. That’s how I want to build mine when I get around to it. I’ve always wanted mine to be able to pull a 24” bar a chain and to be able to just absolutely lean on it in the cut when I want to. Cosmetically I’ll be adding dual dogs to it and an 044 full wrap handle. Really hope to see you go this route with yours and make it an absolute work horse so that I have some videos to follow when I do mine. Wish you the best Tinman 🤘.
Hiya bud I'm so glad you are doing the 026 build I often thought I wish he would do an 026, if you've got 2 lots of casings would it be to much to ask if you did 1 balls out wild one and the other something with good grunt and a general work horse that runs a happy medium of tuning across the board so to speak
I think your BG delete, pipe, and clean up the flow is perfect. I have a 026, and that’s exactly what I’d do with mine… I’d be able to use a bit longer bar, and still pull the chain in a grunt. The average guy doesn’t need a tweaks saw.
I absolutely love this saw i have 4 red lever 2 are metal handle pros and 1 260! I would love to see the kitchen sink!! Have a 550 mk1 with 96 exhaust its currently my favorite saw would love 026 be that again!
I have an 026 pro that im trying to restore, kinda want to have it ported but can't decide. I almost think I'll just swap the carb out for a 2 screw carb and muffler mod it and see how it goes. The internals are perfect just been sitting for a few years. It was kept in a case so its not bad just filthy! Thought about using it for a little bigger climbing saw too. We'll see in the meantime ill be watching this build!
I already have an 026. These are great saws but if you do a base gasket delete, widen the exhaust port and clean up the transfers, I don't think you'll have any issues pulling a 20" bar and chain. I can't imagine what a dome piston and intake port timing adjustment would do for one of these. The 026 is the best saw I've used for firewood. (Although I do have fond memories of a hopped up blue Homelite, the 026 is lighter)

Do a super reliable (grunt) if Grunt means work horse) sense you are sending it out to a viewer. Don't send to me because I don't deserve it and I'm sure others on here could use it more. and it would cost you a fortune to send it down here in S.C. USA where I' am. Hello Tinman!
