I need to say thank you Mustie1 - there are tips and tricks in this video that I have just applied to an engine I'm working on. So useful! I'll have a video to follow. Appreciate you taking the time to film and explain all of this stuff.
Thanks Mustie for the invite to your shop. You are an inspiration to us all. While you were adjusting the valves, I stepped out and watered your neighbors roses. Thanks, I`ll get the lights. See ya next time.
Always a pleasure revisiting these gems, loved the slo mo footage at the end, very enjoyable love Darren’s laid back approach and those shits and giggles laugh he does 😆👍
Your show has inspired me . I and my guys used to work solely on V dubs. Since a medical issue hit me and i had to stop , I can watch you put some pretty rugged engines together, and its therapeutic . THANK YOU Mustie it helps J.J.
Thanks so much for doing this video!! I'm doing my first engine tear down/rebuild (1200cc/36hp) and I use this for reference. It is the best one on UA-cam in my opinion!! Thanks again!
thanks to watching your snow blower repair videos not only was i able to fix my snow blower but i was able to repair the neighbors as well. that netted me a case of bud light. good timing because we just had a big snow storm here in n.w. ohio.thanks.
That's how my 1500 was when I first got it. At least you could see the screen. Mine was covered in and out with sludge. It took a couple of oil changes to clean most of it out. Thanks for the great videos mustie1!
Mustie is a VW GANGSTA! He is the only person I know that keeps his finger on the trigger even when the carb and exhaust is spitting out FIRE! HE never really flinched ... VW OG
I had to cut the exhaust manifold stud nuts off with a hacksaw blade and ask the guys at the machine shop to get the studs out with a torch. Of course that was steel and cast iron.
I have had one of those screwdriver impacts for 15yrs from my grandfather. Never new what it was used for until i started watching mustie1. Now i use it all the time.
I awoke with the first rays of sunlight peeking through the window. Realizing it was finally Sunday, I rushed to the coffee maker as fast I my two feet and knee could carry me. With glee and joy, I sat down with my coffee and saw Mustie was in my notifications with a new video. It's going to be a good day! Thanks for bringing us along.
Thanks for explaining how to split the exhaust stud nut. I’ve broken a few of those on old clapped out motorcycles. Learning new techniques is one of the reasons I watch your videos. Thanks for sharing.
This tear down reminds me of my first ever engine build. It was a Pontiac 400 that literally sat in a swamp in the back of a junkyard for about 20 years. By the time I got done tearing it down, you couldn't see a single patch of clean skin.
Thanks for the memories. I forgot that these engines used washer/shims to align the fan driving belt. Remembering (?) the crankcase material on the VW air cooled used various alloys of aluminum and magnesium. Some production years and other variables (cost?) produced crankcase castings that were prone to alloy segregation. Threads in these cases were subject to tearing out. Still a lot of fun. Thanks.
They are such a great engine design . Lasting design , great engine to run on natural gas, with low sulphur .... Wish you tube was around when I had my vw Thanks Mustie , Alberta Dave
Beautiful work its coming along amazingly... even with the damage it has cleaned up well .. cant wait to see it all finished and installed to hear it purrr buddy .. Thanks for bringing us along for the ride , look forward to the next video ! :)
I gotta say it, you are definatly enjoying yourself. Years of hands on, your an 'ol school' mechanic. Things you do are only learnd by hands on experiance over the years.
Just wanted to say thank you for all the videos. I am a new homeowner with no skills with small engines and watching your videos over the past few months gave me the ability to confidently get my used snow blower working well again. Replaced the carb, tuned it, replaced the drive and auger belt, and was able to get things running smoothly. Thank you so much and please keep doing these videos!
Another awesome and very informative video! That ice at the end was neat as well. I remember ice fishing on my lake once while the ice was making noises like that. Then a big crack came flying right between my legs. I knew it was time to get off, haha.
This is really cool to see VW engine work again. My dad had a VW shop and us kids were raised as his mechanics.Your videos bring back a lot of memories. Thanks for your videos.
To think in 1985 we could get a rebuilt long block VW for $750 (advertised in the pages of Uncle Henry's) One thing I love about Sundays. Wrenching with your channel. Woe is the day when we dont get your relaxing vids.
With like 7 other motors in the Buses what made you see this one and say " Yup , that's the one ! " lol . Great video , lots of tips and wow, A LOT of cleaning ! 👍
@@excavatoree I was just making a joke about the motor, as I saw the almost finished product first hand the other day & I forgot how bad this motor was to start with until I watched the 1st vid ....to say it gives some of my boat anchor vw engines laying around hope is an understatement . Thank you Mustie1 for this engine revival series , great work & looking forward to the next episodes .
Mid 70s I built a Bradly GT kit for a guy in my town . Nice clean bug to start with . We rebuilt entire engine , balanced crank and assembly with 1.800cc cylinders . Two stage Weber along with too much cam ( people had convinced owner ) . We fired it up and could hear knocking right away ! 20 minutes later after tear down we found one block main bearing in block had been cut oversized . The end of block had not been punch marked as any machinist would do . So after polishing the crank and flushing the whole engine and two new sets of crank bearing along with fresh oil pump we re assembled . What a fun car to rip around on . Loved the gull wing doors and the fact it would bring the front wheels off the ground in first and sometimes second gear .
Nothing like waking up on a cold frozen morning in ohio to a mustie1 video before church. Thanks for all the great content, it keep me motivated on my projects.
Great video, as usual! Neat sounds of the frozen lake!! When living in Iowa we heard similar sounds coming from frozen trees - a kind of reverberating twang.
I was tearing down a 1600DP just yesterday and did the same thing with the heater box manifold nuts. Glad to have validation in doing what I do. Great videos as always!
As a former Citroen mechanic I use to heat corroded and sized nuts at 2CV exhausts heating them with oxiacetilenic welder till they become almost red and spraying a little of water over.... they loose as for miracle.Go on great stuff yours!
Mustie, that engine rebuild was fascinating. Don't know If you like kids, but if you found an 8th grader that wanted to learn you would be a great teacher.
I applaud your logical method and practical approach to this and many other activities that you share...! Thanks for you fine narration, too! I strive to do the same...! ;D

Hi Darren; I actually remember the first time I had seen one of those impact tools, at the time I owned a Kawasaki motorcycle, had it in the shop, for some work. This was in 1972, and the shop was, Mud Creek motorcycles.
Every time I see you work on some horrible pile of junk turning in the end to gold, I would so much want to have the same skill and be able to do what you do :D Yet I have so many other interests and so little time that I'm certain I will never even begin to grasp the basics. Yet, I'll still keep watching and admire everything you know and do!
Hey Mustie, you've inspired me to get a project. I'm super into motorcycles and just picked up a 1982 Kawasaki kz650 for 100 bucks! Needs a ton of work, sat outside under a tarp since 2013. Brakes stuck, carbs stuck and clutch stuck. Tank rusty. Wheels rusty. But has 15k miles and turns over. No spark. Hopefully she has some compression and I can revive her. Your motorcycle videos are awesome and I'd love to see more of those. I'm located in ct so you know how rusty our projects are. Anyway, love the vids!
love the Hank Hill reference in your name lolol. I arrived here the same way. I was taking a UA-cam break while resurrecting my 1971 Yamaha 650 and decided to hunt for a VW bus video (just cuz I love Type 2 VW's) and I haven't left since. I'e been learning and getting inspired since, and have come to follow a bunch of the other guys in this circle of talented folks. Have fun with that Kaw, it's a great machine.
It's great to watch a man who knows what he is doing..... Love the engine wrenching more than body work but I guess on a case such the Karmen both are required!! And how can casually throw in the walk of death on a frozen lake at end!!!! Jeez Mustie.....I was clenching!!!!

That nut-splitting at 5:00 (or so), blew me away. Gaining that little gem of a nugget made the whole video worth it for me. Thanks Mustie.

Not that important with a manifold stud. Replacements are cheap.
@@Tore_Lund It's not the cost, it's what is involved with replacing it. Best to avoid if you can.
@@MrUbiquitousTech True, there is a danger that you'll maul the thread in the cylinder head, if the stud is very rusted.
@@Tore_Lund the hole can be re tapped.

Its always a good feeling when the head bolts move a little. Makes ya feel like youre doing something:)
I’ve used your chisel/split nut trick many many times after seeing you do it several years ago! Works like a charm every time! 👍
Gave it a thumbs up before even watching it, and wasn’t disappointed. Great way to start a Sunday morning. Thanks Mustie!
These old vw motors were so simple and if built properly,,, unbelievably reliable
