    Director: Henry Edwards
    Writers: Charles Dickens (novel)
This wonderful adaptation of "A Christmas Carol" would have made Charles Dickens proud. The film is notable not only for its superb performances, but also for the setting and costumes which utterly capture 1843 London. The impressive moving-camera photography and atmospheric lighting are reminiscent of German expressionist cinema. Sir Seymour Hicks, as Scrooge, delivers a first-class performance; and he also co-authored the screenplay.

I just watched this. I also grew up in the 50's, and watched A Christmas Carol on TV in black and white, but I don't think it was this version. I was very impressed with the characterizations, and the production that went into this old version. It's so good that these old films have been preserved for the next generation.

This is one of the best versions of "A Christmas Carol." My personal favorite because it's presented in such an exceptional way. Excellent acting by all. Charles Dickens was a genius to create and write such a moving and heartwarming story. It was first published on
19 December 1843, and 177 years later it is considered one of the greatest pieces of literature to be written. Thank you Sir Dickens for your masterpiece story about Ebenezer Scrooge and all the other characters that have become iconic. I treasure "A Christmas Carol" forever and a day and am grateful that I was able to appear as Mrs. Cratchit in "The Christmas Carol" in my community when I was 18 years old.

This always reminds me of my favorite boss, David R.Ramage. If anyone knew how to keep Christmas, it was he. Mr. Ramage always shut down the print shop at noon and threw a grand Christmas party for his employees. Lots of delicious food and tons of beer and spirits. He would give each of us our paycheck and then another of equal amount for a gift. And because the other shops didn’t have a proper celebration, he would open the doors to everyone who wanted to attend. Everyone loved Mr. Ramage and I think about his kindness every year at this time. May his memory be a blessing.
    Thank you for everything, Boss.

Sir Seymour Hicks was born in the 1870s and was a very famous actor from a youth until his death in 1949.
He first played Scrooge in 1901, after thousands of theatrical performances he filmed the first version as a silent in 1913. Later in 1935 this sound version. Scrooge and Hicks were inextricably linked for decades, it's a shame he has been surpassed & largely forgotten.
I still appreciate this version and watching the actor who arguably most embodied this iconic character & for many generations he WAS Scrooge.

kids when they are young don't know or understand poor and rich,, they know and understand life as it is,, and the way it is ,, well that's normal,, They understand curling up in mom's lap is a warm, safe loving feeling, That's something a millionaire can't ever buy really.
Being a caring, loving parent doesn't cost a thing but to the children it's wonderful thing that will stay with them forever,, They will grow and they will soon realise that some kids have these things that they can't have,, ie: special sneakers that cost a months rent to buy,, Great that some families can get them for there child,,,, but most can't.

I am a fan of every version of this story, from the original story, through Seymour Hicks, George C Scott and Patrick Stewart. And to think Charles Dickens was making it up as he went along, developing the story as he submitted each chapter to be published in the daily paper as a serial. Inspired writing, indeed. This may be why his original plan was for 3 nights but later changed to just one. But no matter -- the story is timeless.

I like the Alistair Sim 1951 version the best, but there is something about its dark lighting of 1930s movies like the horror movies made in that time that made this version the scariest Scrooge for me. When I was a kid the third spirit showing his Future scared me as much was The Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizard of Oz. It was well done and the ending giving Scrooge a second chance is always a favorite to see each Christmas.

(as of 2020) The thing that's special to me is that there were people alive who remember those days when this first hit theatres. This Scrooge is the genuine article. No updates here. Charles Dickens was steeped in a very real, harsh time, he wrote his truth and it's wonderful to see it portrayed in a most accurate manner.

We didn't have a TV. So we went to their house for supper and a movie just before Christmas.

This has always been my favorite Scrooge movie. The actors were on point and the story-line is super close to the book.
It is so raw, creepy, and hilarious! Just as Dickens intended.
The photography and special effects are amazing for the time. Therefore, I think a restoration is merited and ultimately made into a holiday tradition.
    Thank you for no commercials.
    Peace

Had to come back to watch again because I have never had any particular version preference for a "Bob Cratchit" actor, until now. I found everything about the lanky Donald Calthrop in this role, completely compelling (especially the scene with Tiny Tim lying dead in bed)! That scene is also a reminder of things the majority of us these days never have to be concerned with...thought provoking, too. Can you imagine having to keep the dead body of a beloved family member in the home, until all preparations for burial had been finalized? While my favorite "Scrooge" remains Alastair Sim, this version is a gem because of Mr. Calthrop. 💖
