I've a lot of time and love for these veterans as my dad was a Japanese POW, but I've no idea what he's trying to say about his experience as there's little context in this woefully short narrative. You have done him a MIGHTY disservice. Shame.
My wife’s 102 year old uncle very soon to be 103 is one of the last surviving D-Day soldiers and was at Normandy for the 75th anniversary and on Fox TV.
Wow, that's amazing! My Aunt remembers the war from her perspective. She would talk about all the young men being gone from college. It made me think, she really was impressed, and sad that just when she was reaching that age to get to know various young men, the best of them had to go off and fight a very nasty war. She recently died, @ 100.
I had the great privilege of meeting Mr Manley, one of the few survivors of all three major WWII battles. I was able to speak extensively with him, this is the story of when he was shot through both legs. The Germans were executing POWs who were unable to walk. "I'd still be sittin' there" meant he would have been dead. Ed's son has many hours of interviews with his Dad, those stories NEED to be published!
Just curious, what do you define as "all 3 major WW2 battles?" I mean, I'm pretty sure there were more than 3. Stalingrad, D-Day, Midway, Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal, Bastogne/Bulge, El Alamein, Battle of Britain, etc.
My great grandad passed away a couple years back, 102 , he was with the green Howards on first landing crafts as they hit the beaches, and because of him in my earlier years I met a lot of veterans, Brit, American, some french and Canadian vets, even Germans. They really were our greatest generation.
