In the footage shown in the first two minutes, while you're talking about how most windows will have no curtains or open curtains, virtually every window we can see has curtains and most of them are in fact shut.

I've heard of practically all of these stories and you may not believe this, but I still have the velvet curtains and shears from the 1940s that my now deceased mother-in-law had hanging in HER windows hanging in MINE .. I'm a 75 year old American whose been living in the Netherlands for half of my life and still want to hold on to as many old Dutch traditions as I possibly can .. HOWEVER ... I DO draw the curtains once it gets dark out.
A funny story: When I was living in Enkhuizen back in the 70s, these two elderly American ladies approached the house where I was visiting (the windows were sparkly clean as only the Dutch know how to do and were dressed with crocheted doily-like curtains). The one lady pressed her face against the window with cupped hands and remarked in a very loud voice .. 'MARGARET ... will you look at THAT!!!' ... yikes, of course I was mortified, but they certainly weren't wrong for appreciating the lovely homes that the Dutch occupy.

I love that you have those curtains and shears from the 1940s in your home: all the memories and history, it would be a shame to put those away!
It must've been so nice to live in Enkhuizen, it's such a great and cosy city. And yess, those crocheted little curtains are so nice. I definitely understand you being mortified- I also get them wanting to peek inside, but that must've been an interesting thing for you to witness (and for the people living in the house haha).

Thank you for this video! I was so curious why Dutch homes don’t have any curtains, but that was one of the things I liked very much. Especially when I visited Hindeloopen a few years ago, it was just like a fairy tale. No curtains and nobody was looking inside the houses! That’s lovely.

Same, I love it too! It just makes villages, towns and cities feel so much more open. And yesss, Hindeloopen is stunning - I'm so glad you had a great time!

I like curtains at night. I'm just not comfortable with people seeing in.

I am American and I don't like covering windows, I have plants hanging in my windows so they provide partial privacy without blocking out light. If someone really wanted to they could stare in but that would be pretty weird.

Plants are such a nice way to still have some privacy- while also still getting the daylight🙌🏻😌 Hahah yes, it’s pretty weird to just stare into someones home- a quick peek is fine, but the staring is creepy behaviour😂

I am Dutch and have curtains and live in a medieval castle. I only close them in winter time because otherwise it gets to cold an in summer if it is to hot. It takes 15 minutes to open my curtains so closing is a lot of work 😅and no one can look inside so… only the ghosts but they are already inside😄

Honestly that’s so cool - living in a castle, which province? 15 minutes is definitely quite some time yes; I suppose they’re the very thick and heavy kind of curtains? Also, pretty nice that you’re always kept company by the resident ghosts😌😂
