    John Bowman was a treasure, a legend broadcaster, historian, journalist of the highest integrity and capability. His talent for chairing difficult debates and gently extracting answers to difficult questions from reluctant or dishonest participants was an extraordinary talent. A gentleman who was never adversarial but like a gentle laser nearly always got to the truth and directly core of an issue. A talented gentleman. Will we ever see his like again? May father God grant him joy and peace in his retirement. Thank you John Bowman.

    We always knew the Nazis and the IRA were in league, but what this gem does show is that the Irish Govt was fully alive to the threat as well and interned them. It is surprising that the Nazis's. hadn't a serviceable intelligence network in south Ireland pre-war.

      @@sof553only except it’s not an illusion? You care about your mother your brother your father and also your sister then their lives matter to YOU so it’s not an illusion. You could argue in the grand scheme of things earth and the universe at large that we don’t matter but whose lives matter is a question of who cares and once somebody cares that life now matters, it’s not the universe that determines who matters and who doesn’t it’s us same goes for you and anyone else. Somebody out there cares about you so even if I hated you saw you as worthless etc I could never argue that your life doesn’t matter because to someone if not yourself it does.
      I know you mentioned the universe doesn’t make these distinctions but what is the universe then? We made the distinctions between galaxies, milky ways stars and planets and named the universe the universe, everything that we know and think came from us so in a sense the idea or the concept of the universe is just an illusion also as we created these titles and distinctions and the universe didn’t in the same way we make distinctions about whose lives matter.

    My maiden aunt from sligo used to distill aviation fuel with an old poitín set up. She had a long running romance with a Messerschmidt 109 pilot, who landed on her long field. She never spoke after the day he failed to reappear but they were buried side by side many years later by fellow faithful sorts. More than a few songs and poems were composed about them, but the government suppressed most.

    German intelligence in WW2 was terrible

    • @Leberteich
      @Leberteich 9 місяців тому +6

      It was rather better at the Eastern front. When the Red Army emerged as the new adversary in the cold war, the western allies realised they knew precious little about it. Therefore the Americans in 1946 installed a West German foreign intelligence service led by Reinhard Gehlen. In WWII, Gehlen led the German 'Fremde Heere Ost' ('Foreign Armies East') service. He knew the Red Army better than all Western allies taken together. The 'Organisation Gehlen' would later evolve into Germany's foreign secret service. This continuity of old Nazis taking leading positions in the 'new' West Germany infuriated the next generation and was a major driver of the 1968 student revolts.

      It’s very difficult to judge the behaviour of people in the past without using hindsight. Ireland was no more pro-Nazi than the U.K. was in the 1930’s/40’s. It is worthwhile remembering that the U.K. had a not insignificant number of pro-Nazi’s particularly amongst the aristocracy. Ireland did in fact make a significant contribution to the Alled victory. You need to do some research before making a silly comment like that.

      The Irish state used some Nazis style uniforms for police employees I am told by an Irish contact.
      I am told the Irish state allowed German ships into their ports in WW2
      I know they (the police) tracked down and persecuted Irishmen who fought the Nazis whilst in the British forces in WW 2 when they came home, fact.
      The government deliberately let the park (you will know the name) in Dublin fall into rack and ruin since it remembered Irishmen that took up arms in WW1 against the Germans in the British army.
      The Irish intelligence service provided information to Germanys intelligence service to under,one the auks war effort.
