Just wanted to say that I LOVE your channel man! As someone who was poor as a kid-the joy I get shopping for comics at secondhand stores is unparalleled! To your question about vendors-in my experience, comic vendors at shows are pretty solid! I recently got FF #33 (at around a 3 or 4) for $30! However, most flea market vendors(for the most part) REALLY don’t take condition into consideration and seem to thrive off jacking up prices on low grade books. Most recent example I have is a guy at my local flea market had issues 1-3, 5-7, and 12 of Secret Wars. They’re all REALLY beat up and I believe one has a detached cover. Since the announcement of the movie, he’s bundled them up and selling them as an incomplete set for $150. He won’t let anyone look at them either unless they’re actually buying it! Can you believe that?! I was telling him “hey man these are pretty rough, and you don’t even have a complete set”, but he wouldn’t listen and told me he looked them up and knows their value (“thanks to the rare Blue Galactus error”). Luckily, I shop on eBay too-and I now have 1-12 (including additional an copy each for 7, 10, 11, and 12), all for $164! His loss and my gain because all of these are in VF/NM (#8 even has WHITE PAGES).
Thanks for the comment and story! There is indeed a thrill about finding a secondhand treasure. I cherish comics I find at flea markets as they just feel more special. As for your story, ugh. Yes, I was mostly referring to people who don’t usually deal in comics. Even comic dealers who overprice at least understand the worth and will negotiate. I’m happy you got your secret wars set at a great price!
I actually like beat up terrible comics to read and enjoy. Since they are already wrecked, i dont worry about it. Mint ones can be slabbed. They are too clean, and im afraid ill accidently damage them. Its actually good to have two copies of your favorite comics. One mint one for collecting purposes, one poor one to read.
nice pickups i often go to grafton flea market and pick up a couple books here and there but there are def some vendors that wont budge on comics in really poor condition
Yes some people sell torn up comics that should be much cheaper. On a good note I found some comics today in very great condition for 50¢ each. I was in shock and kept stacking these great deals. I hope go back in find more treasures. Keep the video's comeing and Have a wonderful evening!❤️🇺🇸
A great video, as always. I'm always amused by sellers who automatically assume that any comic ten years older than they are is both old and rare - boys and girls, FF #253 or Captain America #268, to pick two at random, are neither. I loved seeing those issues of Arak, Son Of Thunder, that's a fine title which is mostly overlooked by today's fans. I remember buying Moon Knight #1 off the stand and I knew as soon as I'd read it that this was a title I would be buying each month and thoroughly enjoying; Moench and Sienkiewicz worked so well together and each was at the top of his game. So that MK #1 for that price is definitely a worthy purchase. I think there were several Teen Titans anti-drug issues released, the one you found is one I don't have; scaring kids away from drugs was definitely the aim of all these comics. Vendors who won't shift on prices are usually in my experience sellers of other things who end up trying to get rid of comics they've inherited or bought and now regret buying and are determined to make a profit on - and no, they don't understand the vital importance of condition when it comes to comics and other paper collectables.
I've been in comic shops where they didn't price according to condition. I don't mind having some wear on comics but I do mind paying for mint when it's obviously not.
dude i am so jealous! you pull out comic books out of the dollar bins that I pay 4 and 5 dollars or more for in my area! every flea market in my town thinks they are eBay! I don't get it!?! man I wish I lived in your area, I could get some good scores for a lot less money!
Man all those Marvel Red Sonja books. I probably could have finished my run. Lol. Don't be to fast on the Dynamite Red Sonja. J Scott Campbell and Adam Hughes did covers on some of them.
My favorite moment was at an antique store seeing a copy of Journey into Mystery (vol. 2) #11? proudly displayed on a stand on their counter with a price tag of about $200. This was about 30 years ago so it was probably worth about $1.50 at the time.
Yes, I encounter "Sellers" who have no clue that condition is often a deal killer. Admittedly I saw more of it back in the 80s, as I think a lot of those guys gave up, but you still run into dealers that are "Full price" dudes.
Great video as always! And yes, I know your pain! I see that all the time where condition of the books are terrible but the prices are sky high. Mostly see that at flea markets though. Actual Comic dealers typically know how to price accordingly but sometimes I see it with them as well.. Thanks for sharing another interesting experience! 👍😎👍
Yeah, you see some funny stuff. Just the other day I was in an antique store, flipping through the comics when owner mentioned to me that the other owner had a high value comic behind the counter if I’d like to see it. I’m like, sure, whatever, Whatchoo got? So I go to check out and the guy goes in the other room to get the high value book. He comes back with a totally raw, unbagged, tattered book that was so unimportant I literally can’t even remember what it was. The guy mumbled something about it being “the first appearance or something of that guy” as he pointed to some random character on the cover. Not sharing this to break the guys chops, just an illustration that owners sometimes don’t have the slightest clue.
I picked up the whole original run about twenty years ago out of the bargain bins at my local comic shop of Moon Knight. Real bargain as most were in very good condition. Worth every cent I paid.
i have ran into the clueless vendor thing time and time again. there was a vendor at a local flea market who would staple mini series together to sell them as a set. i was able to get a set of the batman/starman/hellboy crossover for a buck each and so glad he didnt staple them together.
Great stuff. Moon Knight is a good buy. I am actively trying to buy up a grade on my Marvel Spotlight 28. Thanks for these MA flea market and other spots mentions. I am just getting back into collecting and needed places to start looking.
I found a near mint alpha flight issue 19 (first talisman) at a flea market yesterday for $3, thought that was a pretty good deal. I’m trying to get issues 1-20 and have most of the teens still missing issues 1-6, I’m jealous of that 5th issue you got, good find !
There's ab antique store and a thrift store here in town. The antique store has comics in decent shape, but they aren't bagged and they put a little price sticker on the backs of the books. The other store has books in various conditions, and they'll charge high prices for books in bad condition because that's the going rate online for a higher grade. I like looking through both shops, but I rarely buy because of those factors. Awesome video. Love that Moon Knight.
If I ever buy a slabbed book it will more than likely be just to crack it open and read it. There are so many slabbed books out there now that I’ve found some cheaper than their raw counterparts. That’s what happens when people start slabbing everything. It’s the slabbing bubble. That’s also why you don’t slab 90’s books that are going to get less than an 8 anyway.
Wow! Coincidentally I just picked up that exact Moon Knight book TODAY in a mid-grade for about $15 bucks. I'm actually on a Moom Knight kick picking up two News Stands, and a Direct edition of his '85 series of First of Khonshu. I'm currently attempting to complete my ASM #100-#400. The bunch that I'm missing are alot of the $$Big Key$$. But as you know, half the fun is finding a bargain!
Absolutely dude! There is the agony (overpriced, low grade) and the ecstasy (really nice books that are cheap) out there. I always think...do you want to sell these or not?
I deal with that kind of stuff with this oldest dirt lady that has a shop, used furniture books and everything, and if it's a dollar in real life she's charging five and will not budge and it's trashed. I could show you a book I got from her and she tried to charge me three bucks. Although I did get her on a couple. LOL but I don't go over there very often
I see this ALL the time. Box after box of dollar box fillers for $5 each. I won’t even look. I mean, investment types might flip through to see if they can get a deal on something, but not in a million years am I paying $5 for a random, single flea market book.
I look at it like this. Sellers can charge whatever they want. It doesn’t mean anyone is going to buy it though. To me charging $20 for a ripped in half Power Rangers #1 just screams inexperience. They are making themselves look bad. They are making themselves look stupid. And they are making themselves look inexperienced. Which they obviously are. You don’t have to be a specialty shop to understand what has value. If you overprice stuff people aren’t going to buy. Hopefully they haven’t been doing it very long and eventually they will learn that lesion. But like I said……..inexperienced.
I've become friends with many vendors at flea markets they contact me evertime they get new books so I get first dibs. Having saying that same here ive tried to school some of them on price vs. Condition those conversations don't always go the best but some poeple are open to learning and others are complete idiots
Keep it up! I ended up cutting some of the footage of me talking about other vendor horror stories… but I didn’t want that much negativity in the video. But I’ve had those conversations (being very polite) where the vendor got combative. Like others have noted, it’s rarely people who actually care about comics, and all you can do is shrug and spend your money elsewhere.
I here you. Ive got 1 vendor ive been buying from since I was 14 im 49 now gonna suck when all us old school collectors are gone its hard to get kids interested in comics I try to expose all my grandkids to it as much as possible.
Gee, the guy who gave you a dirty look for wanting to open up the Freak Brothers comic is so stupid. I find vendors like that annoying, but what can you do? Smile and walk away.
Yes, despite the (very) few I own, I tend to agree. My kid looked at the slabbed books I have and asked me what the point was if I couldn’t read them… I didn’t have a great answer lol.

I guessed Moon Knight! good get! Great post!

That’s funny, I’m guessing they thought it was volume 1 but was that book even $200 back then?

Thanks for the shootout. Nice meeting you there. Yeah Grafton is really hit or miss. Have fun hunting
Same to you!

I have that comic! it was one of my favorites when I was younger.

That issue of Detective Comics is my favorite run with great art by Don Newton and its been collected in Tales of Batman by Gerry Conway vol.3.
I picked up the whole original run about twenty years ago out of the bargain bins at my local comic shop of Moon Knight. Real bargain as most were in very good condition. Worth every cent I paid.
I honestly don't mind graded books, but I will often get one to read too.
i have ran into the clueless vendor thing time and time again. there was a vendor at a local flea market who would staple mini series together to sell them as a set. i was able to get a set of the batman/starman/hellboy crossover for a buck each and so glad he didnt staple them together.

Nice pick up on Moon Knight, great price...

Hey, man, did you ever fill your run? I have issues 8,9,10, that I’d definitely trade if you got some horror you’d like to get off your hands?
Yeah I see people asking for 7.0 prices for 2/3.0s all the time and it’s crazy.

Thanks for the story, it pains me of course but I’m not surprised.

Those Moon Knights are great pick ups, it’s a great time to buy now that the hype has gone down. Good luck on the ASM run, that’s awesome!

Grafton Flea Market, Massachusetts! 📚📚📚
Those bad books bins can have some treasures but not if the seller doesn’t adjust the price😢
I would have grabbed all those Red Sonja's also that vision and scarlet witch I believe was the death of Agatha harkness
Upon rewatching the footage while editing I was shocked I missed that Vision/Scarlet Witch. Good catch!
There are few indoor flea markets in my area... One of them has all it's comics for $5ea. 🤦🏻♂️
I see this ALL the time. Box after box of dollar box fillers for $5 each. I won’t even look. I mean, investment types might flip through to see if they can get a deal on something, but not in a million years am I paying $5 for a random, single flea market book.
🙂Mind if I ask, where do you sell the comics you find?
I don’t usually sell them, at least not yet. Very rarely eBay, otherwise I’m a collector first and foremost. I do try to trade a lot though!
@@lunchmoneycomics Thanks, I've sold a bit, but only because I'm bad at it. Then I get Sellers Regret
good price
A Nancy Reagan card accompanied the two teen titans drug issues when mailed to the house, nice to have hard to find.
I have a copy of that New Teen Titans anti-drug issue. I believe there are 3 different anti-drug issues.
Interesting. Would be cool to track down a whole set. Thanks for the info!
Go ahead and send it to CGC they'll fix it for you! :-)
Want to see lots of comics go to storm illegal ny
Stormville? Yeah thats only a few hours away. I’ll have to check it out.

Not a fan of slabs at all. I buy books to read them not look at the cover.
Yes, despite the (very) few I own, I tend to agree. My kid looked at the slabbed books I have and asked me what the point was if I couldn’t read them… I didn’t have a great answer lol.
Your child is wiser than a significant portion of current comics hobbyists.
Most ppl are picking up Spawn
I did find a Spawn 1 at a flea market a few weeks ago. I think between the movie news and Toddfather signing people are snatching everything up
Some venders are greedy and think every comic a ASM #1
Stormville
complains about ruined comics
also: uses one hand to pull stuff out of boxes at an angle and crease rolls them
Please tell me you snagged that Marvel Tales #229. Early Macfarlane man!!!
Ugh, I did not, gave it a good look though. Fail on my part lol
@@lunchmoneycomics Nah man you're good. Bet you find one in better condition next time.
