  • The Lee-Enfield family of rifles are well known around the world for having served in some from the 1890s up until today. The No. 4s are regarded by many to be the best of the generally issued guns, and in this installment of TFBTV we take a look at, and do some shooting with a lovely example.

    I remember reading a story years ago about troopers in the 1st SS Panzer Division fighting Canadian troops in Normandy. The Canadians were able to fire their Lee Enfield 303 rifles so fast that the Germans thought they were armed with automatic rifles. It an excellent weapon.

    If we could own rifles this end of the planet, I'd buy an Enfield in a heartbeat. The family may not be a powerhouse like the Garands or an engineering masterpiece like the Mausers, but theses venerable ladies provided security and firepower to a legendary empire, nation and commonwealth.

    Its not the bolt action you want to take to competition, and it's not the bolt rifle you want to take hunting, and it's not the bolt rifle you want to exhibit for quality of manufacture. But damned if it isn't the bolt rifle you want to go to war with.

      Actually, I've always been rather fond of my No.1 Mk III as a hunting rifle. It's a dandy hog rifle, fast, accurate and hard hitting. I'm not set up to reload it, but I'm still burning through the ammo I bought it with years ago.

    • @burmiester1
      @burmiester1 8 років тому +49

      Enfields are good for combat, accurate enough for competition, good for hunting and were made with tremendous quality. Maybe not Luger quality, but still with a great degree of precision. I don't know what more you want.

    • @australian3308
      @australian3308 8 років тому +27

      It has been estimated that .303 rifles - either conversions from military config or new made - have taken more large game than any other calibre.
      Quality wise, the Long Branch rifles and the pre- and post- WW2 English made No4's are a thing of beauty, with exsquisite engineering and detail (especially the Long Branch rifles). The mid-war Brit show some manufacturing relaxations, but they were being bombed, unlike the US and Canada. Savage No4's are considered the worst manufactured of all the No4's (and Savage is Chicopee Falls, USA...not being bombed or harassed)
      Any Lee Enfield as a battle rifle is hard to beat. The M1 Garand is not God's Right Hand as the popular media has proclaimed for more than half a century. A Mauser 98 system comes very close, but the Lee Enfield has the advantage in speed and firepower.
      In a true SHTF scenario, I wouldn't take an AR, an AK or any of the quadrail scoped lasered tasered swiss army knife moron magnets - I'd take my genuine DCRA (Dominion of Canada Rifle Association) 7.62 NATO No4 conversion (conversion done at Canadian Arsenals - formerly Long Branch)

    • @sea2813
      @sea2813 7 років тому +14

      I'm going to go ahead and disagree with your point about an Enfield being faster and harder hitting than a Garand. There are a lot of negative things about the Garand, but it is most certainly faster to shoot and reload, as well as harder hitting. The 30-06 M2 Ball cartridge has a muzzle energy of around 3800 Joules (2800 ft lb) where as the .303 MK VII cartridge only has a muzzle energy of around 3300 J (2400 ft lb).

    Ah yes, the Enfield, my favorite!
    Imo the Enfield no 1 mk3 is better than the Mauser, because with the Enfield, you can chamber the bolt while aiming down sights and not punch yourself in the face, unlike the Mauser, where you can tilt your head left and not punch yourself in the face, but then you aren't aiming, and you can aim and chamber the bolt, but your sights will be blocked with the 90 degree rotation of the bolt. And the simple answer to why you can shoot an Enfield so fast is because the bolt is comfortably behind the trigger, allowing for a fast action of shooting with the middle finger, and rapidly racking the bolt with a good grip with the pointer and thumb. And lastly, we all know, it can hold 10 rounds, and yes, 10 does wear the spring, but just load 8, shoot off 3 or 5, and then load a charger.
    But must say, the Mauser and karabiner 98 and the Enfield are my three most favorite bolt rifles, and I do acknowledge the future influence of the Mauser's one peice bolt, but I just simply like the Enfield more.the bolts more comfortable, I love the look, and simply racking the bolt rapidly is a pleasure of the rifle you must try!

      Victer, the M1917 is a different pattern/design of rifle than the Lee-Enfield shown here. The British considered replacing the SMLE during WWI, but aborted the attempt due to wartime production pressures. The replacement arm being contemplated was what became known as the Enfield M1917 in Britain, and the Model 1917 in the U.S., where it was chambered in 30-06 and armed many American soldiers during that war. The M1917 is laid-out along the lines of a traditional Mauser, and does not copy the SMLE two-lug short-throw action. The M1917 is a longer, heavier rifle, with a large and very strong receiver, which is why they became popular to sporterize (convert) to hunting and competition use. The action is strong-enough to tolerate a magnum cartridge, which the SMLE-type Lees cannot. You are correct about the Sirius Sledge Patrol, they do use vintage military bolt-actions, but the M1917 in 30-06 and not the SMLE or No. 4Mk. I in .303 rimmed.

If you use the thumb, as demonstrated, there is a very real risk that you will accidentally fire the rifle as the forefinger will be close to and in easy reach of the trigger.

    There's a story from the Battle of Mons in WWI (I can't remember the source so feel free to take this with a pinch of salt) about the SMLE that really shows off a) the standard of British Marksmanship in that era, and b) just how fast the SMLE was.
    The story goes that a company of BEF troops were making an attack over around 1,000 yards of no-man's land, and they made it with hardly a shot fired in response. When the captured Germans were questioned, they said that anyone who bothered sticking their Pickelhaube up to fire a shot back caught one right in the head, and that they thought they were under attack from a new slow-firing machine gun.
    Really shows you what these old rifles could do!

    I was at a pawnshop how many years ago I had one of these rifles and a 4 number serial number, German Mauser. The Enfield was in good shape The German Mauser not so much but had potential after cleaning the surface rust. I walked over there with both of them for $150 and a deluxe cleaning kit.

    Small correction here. This is a Lee-Enfield, NOT an Enfield. An Enfield is a different rifle.
    Following the Boer War the British army wanted to change its rifle design and switch to a smaller bore (7 mm). So the Enfield rifle was developed. It had forward lugs as in the Mauser pattern but retained cock on closing and had a rear peep sight as the No. 4 Lee-Enfield had later. It also used an internal magazine.
    The design was finalized in 1913 and the Army intended to re-equip with this Enfield. However War War 1 interrupted the process so the Enfield was redesigned to take the .303 (7.7 mm) ammunition. This .303 version was called the Pattern-1914 Enfield (P-14). These were manufactured in parallel with the Lee-Enfields. A lot of this P-14 manufacturing was done by Remington in the USA. In 1917 when the US entered WW1, the US army needed lots of rifles quickly so the Remington Enfield was modified to use the .30-06 cartridge and this version was known as the Pattern-17 Enfield (P-17). WW1 proved the battlefield superiority of the Lee-Enfields so this design was retained. P-14s were issued to troops only in Britain, and was used by the home guard in WW2. Likewise the US P-17s were only used within the US. Overseas troops used the Springfields.

    The Lee Enfield No 4: the rifle that replaced the SMLE in British service because they dropped them all and ran away at Dunkirk. Literally.

      To be fair, the Brits were able to get to and evacuate Dunkirk due in no small part the rearguard action of the remaining French military.
      Vietnam chased out the French Colonial force prior, overthrew Pol Pots regime and defended against Chinese invasion shortly after U.S. involvement, so it's not like the Vietnamese force was just made up of "peasants in straw hats".

    I had a deactivated LE 4 for drill as an RAF apprentice and always thought it was an antiquated relic from WW2 compared to the sexy modern automatic rifles and carbines. I had no idea that the LE 4 is so good. I now regret not firing an LE 4 at the rifle range instead of just firing the fantastic Bren.

    one of the best rifles ever if not the best ever. and on the note of accuracy one mile shots have been made with them. there is actually a book wrote before the 80's on how to make shots with this rifle the 1903 Springfield Mosin Nagant and several other bolt-action rifles of the World War 1 World War 2 era and get my long accuracy out of them.

    "...optimism in actually hitting something at 1300 yards". 300 -1300 yard range is for section fire or area fire (as is MG fire at these ranges). If you want to know how effect and accurate it was asked the Germans who survived the Battle of Mons 1914.

    • @GeorgiaBoy1961
      @GeorgiaBoy1961 5 років тому

      A skilled rifleman can hit an enemy soldier well beyond 300 yards, as U.S. Marines have proved over and over again in combat all over the world. Most-famously in 1918 at the Battles of Bellaeu Wood and Chateau Thierry, when Leathernecks using iron-sighted Springfield M1903 rifles picked off advancing German soldiers at ranges up to 800 yards. On-looking French soldiers were astounded, and admitted that they did not believe such marksmanship in battle was possible. 0-300 yards is the typical range at which infantry small-arms combat occurs, emphasis "typical" - but there are plenty of exceptions especially when the terrain favors longer-range fires. And at ranges past those typical for engaging one individual enemy soldier, volley-fire can be used as an area-denial technique - which is why those old bolt-action military rifles have sights graduated out well past 1,000 yards. Up until WWII, traditional riflemanship as taught to most major armies in the world still included using coordinated sectional-fire (by platoon, squad, fire-team, etc.) as a means of harassing enemy formations at extreme range. An NCO or officer would glass the enemy and call out range and corrections as the team fired. This role was later assumed - taken over - by heavy MGs, mortars, and artillery (as well as airpower) during WWII.
