William Lai wins Taiwan presidential election

    Voters in Taiwan have chosen Vice-President William Lai Ching-te from the independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to be the island’s next leader. It was the first time a Taiwanese ruling party has won a consecutive third presidential election, but the DPP lost its control of the legislature. Lai got 40 per cent of the vote over the other two opposition candidates - Hou Yu-ih from the mainland-friendly Kuomintang (KMT) and Ko Wen-je from the newer Taiwan People’s Party (TPP).
