Cosmos seeds are so neat, like little shreds of brown dry leaves. Mine sprouted cotyledons in 4-5 days under an LED. I appreciate seeing what their true leaves will look like and when I should transplant from your video. Knowing they have a deep root system helps me to know how I plan to scoop and space them in transplant. If I thin, I will simply pinch the top instead of possibly disturbing healthy roots. Thanks so much for your video. It has given me more confidence in my planting process.
Thank you for sharing. I now have comes seedlings and thanks to you I know how to transplant them. I do have a question though. I noticed that you didn't put soil up close to the top. Should you did add more soil as the plants grow to support the stem or leave where it is? Thanks for your time.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. No I did not put any extra soil. I left 1-2 inches at the top for watering and mulching. Here is the link to the updated video with results if you are interested to check out ua-cam.com/video/6Q5RiNQCecY/v-deo.html
Next time do what I did and start them in the big pot do each seed individually pointing root end down and see how beautifully the pot gets when they grow and flower.
How did they germinate indoors? Was by a window sealer grow lights? If it was grow light, please let me know how to get not leggy with only 2 leaves and leggy?
No they were in my greenhouse. These are hardy annuals so can germinate easliy in a cold frame. I didn't have any lights and they did well in shorter over cast winter days.
Hi! Enjoying your channel! I've seen lots of cosmos in the youtuber gardening videos, but I'm nervous to plant these. We have terrible wind here in Oklahoma, and I would think that the fern-like leaves would be damaged? Can they take some wind once they are established in the pots, do you think?
We do get lots of wind storm here in UK but mine seemed to survive it. Mine got really tall 4-5 feet so I had to stake them. I guess there are some dwarf varieties too. Also I think they would do well in poor soil where they produce less foliage and more blooms. Thanks for watching. Take care.
Thankyou for the tips on how to grow these flowers I have some in my garden in a container and they are growing well,I have a container garden and I need idea on what plants I could use for one side of my garden that gets no sun at all i read somewhere ferns do well in shade thanks for any advice 😊
It's multipurpose compost from a locsl shop, nothing extraordinary. Sometimes seeds are not good enough to germinate. Or did you have problem with transplanting?
It is hard to tell without visual inspection but you can check few things. 1) Please check if there is any bug infestation. If yes, you can use an insecticide. 2) If the leaves are turning brown and crispy, it could be due to sudden drop in temperature. Try to keep plants moist and warm for a few days to see, if they bounce back. 3) If the soil is wet and soggy and the the plant is turning brown and mushy, it could be due to damping off. Try to repot the seedlings which are still healthy and try not to overwater. Also make sure the seedlings get plenty of light, stays warm. They may need potting up if the roots are outgrowing, and also feed them regularly at leadt 2 times a month.
Ok As I said earlier, there could be many reasons and it is hard to tell without seeing them. May be you can take them to a local garden centre or nursery to see if they can tell you the possible cause.

Yes ferns, hostas, heuchras, fuchsia, astilbe, they all thrive in shade garden. Hydrangeas like partial shade morning sun.
