    "Overpriced" is an extremely mild definition. It is exorbitantly overpriced. One can take a 10 minutes' bus ride between the airport and Märsta railway station and take a "normal" commuter train between Stockholm and Märsta. That will save a lot of money at the cost of extra 20 minutes.

    Correction: at 1:20 that's not an SJ Intercity service. It is an SJ Regional service called "Uppsalapendeln" (= Uppsala Commuter) using Intercity carriages and locomotives (however it is longer). It departs platform 3 and goes between Stockholm and Uppsala stopping at Märsta and Knvista (around 40 min). It also uses the X40 double decker trains, seen on the left. There is one or two services per hour, and sometimes non-stop services (around 30 min). It costs 95 SEK or $9,83 or €9,01 one-way for 1 adult.

      High tax rates in Sweden.

    • @skogistheonlyone6812
      @skogistheonlyone6812 4 роки тому +7

      It's not because of high tax rates. Its beacuse contrary to SJ (which is state owned) and the regional traffic SL (which also is owned by the tax payers)
      Arlanda Express is a private company owned by a chinese investment group. It owns the only privately owned train station in Sweden which is Arlanda station. Hence why it's so expensive.
      They own the rail and everything, also they do have monopoly on trains to Arlanda. If you want to hop on a SJ trian at Arlanda you have to pay a small fee to Arlanda Express for maintenance of the station.

    This must be the most expensive airport shuttle by train. In the other end og such scale, the train to/from city in Tbilisi, Georgia,is said to cost 0,50 GEL equal to 14 Eurocents. But I do only find one departure a day.
    It is also very cheap to go by train from Bangkok city center to old Don Muang Airport, not to be confused with the new one.
    Back to Stockholm, I believe all train transport to Arlanda Airport is subject to a high contruction fee. Used to pay down construction of the line. Such is not uncommon, I can mention Brussels and Sydney who do collect the same.

    I am Canadian , the train from Toronto Pearson to Toronto Central Station (downtown ) is about 16 CAD around 12 Euro , looks like we Canadians are doing things better and more humane like . True that the trip is not on a 200km/hr train but it does the trick . Also true that the geography of Stockholm is more demanding and infrastructure more costly to build . In Vancouver from YVR to downtown is about 4 CAD using the skytrain ( Metro/tube/underground ) about 20 minutes ride . However I have a short connection in a couple days and will use the Arlanda Express so I can be sure to catch my flight in time . I took a flight with connection in Stockholm and I didn't checked before purchase but there is a 140 km trip between 2 of Stockholm airports , Skavsta to Arlanda ) . Pay good attention in the future at these things . It will take me 3 busses and almost 4 hours to cover it , after 9 PM first landing .

Here in Germany you can travel about 500 km in an ICE for 30€ although DB is not famous for beeing cheap...About 10-15€ would be a fair express price for this journey.
    But with tables and a restaurant car, this could be a decent intercity train.

    We stayed near Arlanda airport because hotels in Stockholm were outrageously expensive( not that the hotels near the airport were cheap either!). No question of using this train . While I do agree that the price is expensive as hell, it's a cheaper price than a price of 575 SEK for a taxi that takes also longer (by like 30 minutes compared to 18 minutes) + that this is an airport shuttle. If you would want a cheaper alternative to the city, then you should take the commuter train (158 SEK for a one-way ticket through a gate and a ticket with the public transport for 75 minutes) or the shuttle bus at the price of 109 SEK or 119 SEK if you pay in-person.

    Is it expensive? Yes. But no more expensive than say; the Heathrow Express. Sydney also has a dedicated train that you pay a premium for. Berlin Tegel outer either a cheap slow bus or an expensive taxi.

      Look at it from a different perspective: Heathrow to London takes well over an hour by coach and start at £10, while the Heathrow Express is 15 minutes and starts at £5.50 if purchased in advance. In Stockholm, the coach costs €5-8 and takes 45 minutes while the Arlanda Express costs €29 and takes 18 minutes.
      So in London, you save £5 and an hour by taking the Heathrow Express, while in Stockholm you save just 25 minutes, but pay extra €25 for taking the Arlanda Express.

      Probably because it's a for-profit company and they're the fastest option to and fro Arlanda by far. They can ask a lot because their competitors (Flygbussarna, SL, Flixbus, . . .) all take much longer.

      Because the idiotic Bildt government which was in power in the early 90s when construction of the line started decided to give a complete monopoly on the Arlanda Express service until 2040 to the private company that runs it. Therefore they can charge pretty much whatever they want, knowing there's no competition or chance of the government taking away their right to operate the service until then.

    The airport rail link in ARN is a ripoff in general. This does have got a history but nonetheless it is very disappointing. Even if you take a commuter train from Arlanda to the centre, you have to pay an extra fee to either enter or leave the train station where the commuter train stops at (which is not the one where Arlanda Express stops at). It is okay that Arlanda Express exists for that extra bit of comfort but its not okay that you have to pay extra fees if you use other trains. You don't have to pay an airport station fee in Oslo either.

    • @erkgards
      @erkgards 4 роки тому

      No. The fee is for passengers on SJ’s regular trains stopping at Arlanda. So in addition to the overpriced tickets for Arlanda Express the owners get this service subsidized by all the other travellers who go to or from Arlanda on the other trains. It’s a f-up system put in place by the conservative government of the 90’s and then again by the conservative government about 8 years ago when they extended the deal with Arlanda Express even though the new tracks to Arlanda was paid for.
