  • “In 1977, emotions were high and decisions had to be made quickly, so we laid Ronnie to rest in Orange Park,” she said. “A few years later, some crazies broke into his crypt and tried to steal his body. Again, emotions were high and decisions had to be made quickly.”
“He was moved to Riverside Memorial Cemetery and was buried. Melody and I were never happy with this spot,” Judy Van Zant continued. “After a great deal of time and thought we decided on a quiet, peaceful spot under a big oak tree overlooking a small lake.”

I visited the original site back in 85.
    What a great site!!
All 3 mausoleums were there. Ronnie, Stevie and Cassie Gaines. 2 nice marble benches with 1 having a great quote carved in it from Charlie Daniels.
I heard they were moved since then, but didn't know that Ronnie was moved again.
Personally I believe that no matter where they are buried here, they all are together in Heaven forever!!

The first move, we all understood but, where he was placed, near his family was made very secure, he did not need to be moved again Judy!!! Although this is an absolutely gorgeous place, he's all alone there. At least where he was before, he was surrounded by his loving friends & bandmates & they just laid to rest Gary Rossington right across from where Ronnie was.

Oh geez she moved him again. As good as her intentions might be he's alone in the middle of nowhere now. When he was moved near his parents I agree it wasn't exactly the most prestigious location but he was with his family and bandmates. Gene Odom and others had stated when he was moved near his parents a crazy amount of cement was poured on top of the vault so disturbing his grave was virtually impossible without heavy equipment. Now Gary will be buried on the other side of the fountain (and eventually Johnny) and Ronnie is gone. Out in the middle of nowhere and you basically moved him to a location yards from standing water. Ronnie from what I understand never lived the life of a loner but he's a loner now. I respect your decision Judy but I just can't imagine Ronnie would have agreed with you. RIP Ronnie
Lord, please protect and watch over this mans grave. Protect it from vandalism and natural disaster. Finally please let him FINALLY rest in peace along with the other Skynyrd band members.

How could they leave him all alone? I feel as if they desecrated him by moving his remains even though I know he’s in heaven, I just feel what they’ve done was so disrespectful to him.

I agree she is protecting him and giving him the privacy he needs. Johnny, Donnie and other family members can visit him. She doesn't want it to be a spectacle. She probably wants to spend some time with him without fans there.

I don’t think Judy had Ronnie moved. His daughter did. The family plot was full and there wouldn’t be room for Melody. These decisions can only be made by the next of kin. That’s not Judy anymore. She lost that title when she remarried. His next of kin is his child and grandchildren. Yes, Judy got to make those decisions right after the plane crash, and again when someone broke into his grave. Because his children (daughters) were minors. All decisions now fall on his daughter Melody. It’s a nice area. Ronnie is close to the little lake. He loved the water and fishing. There is also room on both sides of his grave for his daughter and grandchildren should they want to be laid to rest there. At the end of the day, it’s what his family wants.

Are you a fan? If so, you should know that the band flew that flag at every show they did. Dropped one the size of the whole stage every time they played "Sweet Home Alabama". Everyone in the group, and indeed, everyone from where they grew up and lived, revere's that flag. Not because they're racist, but because it's the symbol of their heritage--pride in family, freedom, and defiance of a tyrannical central government, that sought to undermine the rights of states to govern themselves. That's what a republic IS. Certain people despise the flag because they live in a"left-wing political past", that labels that flag out of context of what it actually means to people like myself, who's family on both sides, is southern. I live in Ohio now, but used to live in Florida. I shouldn't have left.
