    Cool idea. I think it would work best as a "direct from roaster" kind of deal. You walk into like, a Counter Culture, Blue Bottle, (or even starbucks??) location, have a cup of coffee, and take a box of these frozen shots home. I think this best fits the niche of chronic coffee shop visitors, the people who come in every day.

    Your point towards the end makes the most sense to me, throw one in my work bag and be able to make a tasty cup of coffee midway through the work day once my morning fresh cup has ran out. It's gonna be a lot better than the instant coffee my work supplies, and I don't really want to take the time every day to pack fresh ground coffee and bring my aeropress every day for a fresh coffee.

    Just received my first box today and have prepared only 2 "pucks" so far. I really liked those 2 cups and while I wouldn't call myself a coffee snob, my daily driver is a pour over using the Kalita Wave. So I do know a little something about specialty coffee. While the preparation is indeed "instant", the coffee itself is nothing like instant coffee. It is the real deal and I really enjoyed it. I am excited about the remaining 30 pucks. All that said, I am not thrilled about $2/cup since I am able to source very freshly roasted high quality beans from a local roaster and I have a very decent grinder. Incidentally, I was also gifted a Nespresso earlier this year but this infinitely better than that. I drink about 2 cups a day, so I will probably keep a stash in my freezer for occasional use but stick to my pour over. Just to be clear, this is NOTHING like instant coffee, so all those in this forum who are dismissive of it right of the bat because of the way it is prepared should give it a go at least once before trashing it.

    I have a friend who recently started working for Cometeer and I was fortunate enough to be able to try some. It is quite amazing how good it is for an instant product, that will keep for 18 months in the freezer. I likely won’t be purchasing it for myself as I love the practice of grinding and brewing, but there are plenty of people who want great coffee and don’t want to spend the time or money on equipment to get it. It’s also a great way to always have good coffee handy without having to worry about it going stale, or be able to serve really good coffee to guests if you don’t drink it often enough yourself to invest in a coffee maker/grinder/whatever. At the end of the day they are making ethically sourced specialty coffee available to more people, which is awesome!

    It would be a great idea for them to do a big multi-pack of multiple roasters and beans. Rather than going out and buying many bags of craft coffee, you could buy a multi-pack to see what you like. Once you find the one you like, you could buy in bulk or switch to the fresh bean direct from the roaster. It would save a lot of trial, error, and expense with buying new, untasted beans!

    So, these were perfect. I found myself in a new relationship, mostly living out of her house. Not quite enough to start combining our kitchens, but far enough in that I'd like to have my creature comforts in the morning. Instead of bringing over my $500 worth of brewing equipment, or buying a copy for her place, I invested in these capsules. They're a nice way to have craft coffee away from home, and to introduce someone new to the world of coffee. Basically, they're a great stopgap between rigs.

    My hypothesis re mouth feel is that super freezing will cause separation of oil and water solutes that get removed in the processing? Not sure if that explains the lack of perceived acidity since I’m not clear what molecule(s) are contributing to that taste. 100% hypothesis but there’s gotta be some interesting chemistry happening with that rapid temp change. Cool video and hope to try this out someday. Also hope that packaging is recyclable, last thing we need is more waste from coffee.

    "or you work in an office with specialty coffee deniers" I bet a lot of people deal with that lol! what I would recomend is brewing before work into a mug like the fellow carter., also, have you experimented with "nobloom" like they do it at Tales coffee?

  • @sdjohnston67
    @sdjohnston67 3 роки тому

    Very interesting. I suspect that a fairly significant proportion of people who are buying higher-priced specialty coffee beans and brewing at home, actually are not making particularly high quality coffee because they haven't put together all the details that all need to be in the right ballpark for a truly high quality final product (grinding, water quality, brew method, filters, ratio, etc.). I suspect many people don't realize how much they could improve what they are doing at home because what they are doing is still better compared to what they had been doing previously with lesser quality coffee and using a terrible grinder (e.g. blade grinder). So, in other words, the quality that many people are achieving at home is probably far short of of what it could be. But, these folks are coffee lovers. So, when they try something like this Cometeer concentrate, it may well taste better than what they are doing at home. And it's probably much more consistent than what they are doing at home. At least, I suspect this may be true for many people.

    • @Sprometheus

      I wondered that. I don’t know if it’s a hot or cold brew, but if it’s cold. The loss of acidity makes a lot of sense, but usually texture still comes across in cold brew. That’s a good question. Maybe they are lurking the comments and will respond to that.

  • @Dave004
    @Dave004 2 роки тому

    Price is pretty crazy. I buy really good beans from a specialty coffee place and it comes out to about $1.26 per cup including tax (Canadian). If I were to buy this, at $64 US for 32 cups, in Canadian that would be about $82 not including duty/tax, so call it about $90 for 32 cups of coffee would be $2.81 per cup. I don't think convenience of not having to brew coffee (which isn't that hard) should cost an extra $1.55 per cup, but thats just me. I guess you could argue you don't need a coffee machine so you save there (although brew over is a cheap option or french press), but then i'd say a large coffee at McDonalds is $1.99, maybe not quite as good but if you do it every day you're saving $300 a year buying McDonalds coffee everyday vs Cometeer. To each their own I guess.

This is a great in between idea where I still have the convenience of a kcup but much better flavor. I'll try it out!

    I think the point of speciality coffee is achieving those aromas and flavors. Frozen coffee; I dont know...

    Instant coffee. Just add water. Frozen coffee. Just add water. Real fresh ground coffee... guess what, just add water. Why is there a relentless search for how to make something more complicated?

  • @starwf07
    @starwf07 3 роки тому

    It’s an interesting idea, and it’s impressive that they have essentially accomplished the goal of high quality “instant”. But I’m trying to imagine the subset of people that are really interested in specialty coffee, but are willing to pay approx. twice the price and take up way more storage/freezer space to save 5 minutes brewing it. It’s cheaper than a pour over from a cafe, but not really much cheaper (if any) than drip from a cafe. I guess time will tell how much of a demand there is for it.

    • @starwf07
      @starwf07 3 роки тому

      After another moment thinking, I guess I could see it as an option where people may have access to a fridge/freezer but not coffee brewing gear. Like at work.

    $2 per capsule is way too much IMO. Coffee just isn't that hard to make.

    Definitely do not like the packaging. "Fully recyclable" literally means nothing, is not environmentally friendly at all. This is literally just a bougie K-cup to me.

    • @mrkeegs

      I had similar concerns - according to their site the packaging is made of aluminum, which is much more easily and efficiently recycled than the plastic k-cups.

    • @Sprometheus
      @Sprometheus  3 роки тому +4

      Yeah, like Keegan’s comment, the cup is aluminum and recyclable, which is definitely a far and away better than plastic.

      I agree. My work is in mining/ minerals and there’s a truism that aluminium is just solid energy. The making of aluminium is so power intensive they ship bauxite (the raw material) from australia to Iceland to take advantage of cheap hydrothermal energy. They ship it using HFO (oil). There’s no clean aluminium. It’s a super high energy intensive product and most isn’t made using renewable energy. Most is made using coal or at best LNG.
      Sure it’s recyclable but the process to get them there is very energy intensive. Buying coffee beans in kilo bags seems a lot better.

      I think it has its place. We in specialty want to turn our noses up at things like this, but if it brings a larger audience to specialty roasters who are focused on quality and sustainability I don’t see it as a bad thing at all.

      @@Sprometheus well I guess it may be, put really put all that energy, to deliver a freezed coffee, i mean using that energy in a more sustainable way?Freezing beans for let's say 6 months has a sense, but drinking a, don't know even how to name it... Not a fan of the "recyclable" pods. Given that specialty coffee generally supports environmental responsibility, they should have gone with a compostable solution instead of plastic. We all know that those pods (and a lot of other "recyclable" stuff makes it way into the ocean and landfills).
