  • The market for premium handheld coffee grinders has grown quite a bit in recent years, but you hear mainly the same names over and over. But now a new manual grinder, the Timemore Chestnut X, has hit the market and made the choice for baristas everywhere that much more difficult.

Bought a 1zpresso JX-Pro last year to use with my office setup and the price point, build quality and grinds are top notch compared with my step-less grinder at home. I much prefer the dial on top, compared to bottom mounting for this one and anyone who had the JX-Pro will speak to how satisfying the adjustment knob clicking into place is.
I’m another one here suggesting you do a review of the lesser known, cheaper brand, 1zpresso. There’s a cult following on Reddit using them and at least a half dozen users in the comments for this video too.

I myself bought the kplus from 1zpresso, it's a bit bulky and more on the function over form side. The chestnut x looks great, tho I wonder how it would compare. If I had to choose where kplus excels the most, I definitely would say ease of use and consistency.

I have been rocking my Knock Feldgrind I got on a 1/2 off sale ($125) shipped from Scotland. It looks and works like the day I got it after three years of heavy use. Since I also roast my own coffee, I find manual grinding gives a lot of feedback on the actual roast level which can be a little different than just using the color. You really know when you are grinding a light roasted SHB, it's like wood lol.

Love your channel, wish I subscribed sooner, so I don't have to running in circle before I settle down.
I jumped from those cheap grinders a few months ago by buying a Timemore C, because of the pure apparent, and it is a good grinder. However, it is not for espresso which I love more than pour over. then I research their burr chart and decide to replace with a titanium coated E&B burr.
Man, that is a beast! it totally changed my TM-C into a premium hand grinder.
The grinding is a bit heavier but is a lot quicker and smoother. And the grinding result is superb.
The pour over grinding can emit a lot of aroma fragrant just from the starting of grinding.
Then I got this crazy idea, why not buy a top of the line TM to see how much more they can improve. So, I settle down with this Chestnut X.
But, to be frank, it is a bit disappointed. The Chestnut X is better than other TM series in every aspect in term of engineering precision and material quality. I can't find a single plastic part in it!
But the grinding is not that smooth comparing with their own Titanium E&B Burr. and it take longer for espresso grinding. How come?!
One big up side is those precision scale that make the espresso tuning in a lot easier. (and that is one of the big reason I jump in for this TM-x)
One big down side is the heavy, smooth and big body. Without leather cover, you just can't hold it steady when grinding. (given the grinding is not that smooth as well) and the lever, although it is a great design, is way too heavy to put the whole grinder off center. It is very easily tipping over if you don't fold the lever.
Above is my humble experience to this TM, both X and Titanium E&B burr,
My suggestion, go for that Titanium coated E&B burr for actual coffee grinding, doesn't matter what model of TM you bought.
Above said, I don't regret a bit for buying this TM-X as well. The engineering precision and the material quality alone can make me play with it all day! It is a great pleasure to have it on hand!

Since getting a good hand grinder, I am a convert. I won't pretend that the result matches a Robur, but I have approximately zero bad extractions, and it's liberating. I don't have to dedicate counter space or worry about power outlet location. I can easily travel with it. Moving is a breeze. It's quiet. It looks good on a shelf, whereas even the nicest electric grinders still just look like appliances.

I can plug my Makita Impact Driver into my Rhinowares hand grinder. I know that defeats the purpose of a "hand" grinder but there's been times (power cuts are too frequent in NZ) when I just can't be bothered with the physical workout and the hand grinder is my only option. I love the 1Zpressos, having a Jx-Pro myself, and would love to see a review of that one or others in the line since nothing really touches them in that price range.
This is what someone on the Flair Facebook page said about the line up and their espresso taste tests:
“I've been dabbling around with different 1zpresso hand grinders the last couple of weeks. I don't really have time to spend hours at a time dialing in different grinders, so don't expect a very scientific report, but I feel I 'get' the effect of different burr types.
TLDR: JX(-pro): perfect allrounder, clean and complex but lots of body, fantastic value. Grinds fast!
K-plus: incredible clarity, I call it the flavor magnifying glass. We even used it as the only grinder for last weeks SCA sensory summit.
JE-plus: smooth, easy (slower) grinding, lots of texture/body, but less detail in the cup. I guess it produces a lot more fines, which is considered favorable for espresso.
Which brings me to what's been on my mind lately; fines! According to barista hustle, a good espresso grinder produces enough fines so it clogs the basket a little bit. It also makes sense that those fines get washed away, and then supply the smooth creamy texture we all love in a espresso.
But playing around with the JE-plus on very different coffees, I also noticed I need to work a bit harder to get my puck prep right. If I hurry the puck prep, I get more chances for channeling, dead spots, 2 streams, etc.
With the uncoated burrs of the K-plus, I almost never have a unhappy puck. 🤷No fuss, great shots.”

It's one of the big benefits of this "spike to cut" burr design, that it tears through beans at espresso grind levels. I have the much cheaper Slim Plus, I can grind 20g espresso in around 40 seconds. The main limitation of that grinder is the steps are too big, although I got an aftermarket plate that doubles them (24 clicks) which does help. Certainly there is no issue with speed. I got it mainly for Aeropress (which it fits inside) rather than espresso, but it is fast grinding espresso.

I have to say, Timemore has really been upping their game over the last few years, used to be absolute rubbish back in the day. As someone that owns a Commandante and used an M47 side-by-side on-an-off for the last six months, they are both truly great hand grinders.. Until I tried the 1Zpresso K-Plus. That thing totally kills it. Probably the easiest hand grinder to dial in and beats both the Kinu and Commandante in the taste of 'Spro and pour-over and all the built-in accessories for espresso and distribution techniques. That said I know the Apollo hand grinder also has a real following, but haven't yet tried it.
