Let's see if I got this straight: Some members of a synagogue went to the enormous effort of secretly constructing a tunnel merely so they could enter the sanctuary at times when it is ordinarily closed? This seems a rather extreme solution to a minor administrative issue and so I find it probable that there is some undisclosed motive for the endeavor.

I used to live down the street from this building. The young men in this community have wild energy and throw massive parties outside of that building. When I heard that there was a tunnel being dug in a synagogue in Brooklyn, I immediately assumed it was that building and I’m not surprised that I was right.

Most likely, authorities chose to quickly fill the tunnel with concrete to stabilize all the buildings it goes under. Holes broken through load bearing walls can lead to structural problems and collapse in old stone and brick buildings. Those bonehead kids were doing damage that they didn't understand, the school might want to include some engineering in the curriculum going forward...

Use your brains people. These tunnels are meant for something else. These men became so defensive over them. If they really wanted access after hours, why wouldn’t they just request access? Why become so belligerent and threatening over the prospect of the tunnels being filled in? That just makes it even less likely for after hour access to be granted.
