- Steve loves to fish as much as he loves to hunt. Steve is on a river in SW Montana for a day to catch some rainbow trout and cook a few over a fire. As fishing and campfire cooking offer time for reflection, Steve takes the time to recall a few memorable MeatEater meals. From caveman style sheep ribs in the Alaska Range to curiosity-induced coyote BBQ in Mexico, these meals give Steve the chance to explore what it means to be a MeatEater.

One of the camping trips I took my son on when he was growing up that he remembers to this day was a fishing campout. We would eat the fish we caught. Money being an issue at the time, I bought a bag of potatoes, a dozen eggs and a bag of salad. We wouldnt starve. We caught a few trout and had a few great meals. To this day he remembers that camping trip as one of the best. He was 12 at the time. Today he is a year away from 30 and brought this trip up last fall when we were goose hunting and how that trip has stuck with him while we were sitting around the campfire. He is planning the same kind of trip with his daughters. At the time I thought I was a failure. Today I realize I taught a valuable lesson that has stuck with my son.
Good job brother, we do the best we can to give our kids the best we can. Definitely not a failure. Memories last a lifetime.

That’s similar to why fishing was embedded into me. When I was younger my grandpa and I would camp at Wallowa Lake in Oregon and would catch our trout in the creek and cook it and I remember the whole experience and I just crave one or the other. Creek, cooking, trout skin, memories 🍻
Some of my best memories were at our fish shack on the southern gulf coast in Texas with my Dad and Uncle. Fishing ICW for speckled trout, flounder, and reds. Frying them up the night of. Great times I will always remember.

The trout in tinfoil reminds me of how we cooked trout at boarding school. We never had access to oil and tinfoil, but we would slip some butter and salt out of the dining hall and take it with some newspaper on our fishing trip. When we caught a trout we would salt it lightly, put some butter into the stomach cavity and roll it up in newspaper. We then soaked the newspaper and covered it in coals. When the newspaper turned black, we would take it out of the fire and gently unwrap the trout. The skin came off with the newspaper and the moist delicious meat was ready to eat.

Rinella could film every episode at the shack in Prince of Wales island and I'd die a happy man. The place is the most beautiful and diverse location I've ever seen.
Memorable Eats, I think, is one of the best ideas on meateater and has one of the greatest potentials in future Meateater seasons with more memorable eats episodes. It allows Steve to not only connect with the hunting sides of things, but the differences in food experiences. Whether that be the standard easy hunter meals, interesting and new recipes with guests on the show, or an experience abroad where old beliefs are completely shaken up. Memorable eats has the potential to really remind viewers of the consumption aspect of hunting, the differences in hunting methods and food consumption between individual hunters, and the differences in hunting/consumption cross culturally. I love episodes like these. MORE MORE MROE

Very true. The best fish I ever ate was catfish my buddy and I fried on the bank of a river after an exhausting day of paddling and fishing. I bet it would have been terrible at the dinner table on a normal Friday night.
I killed a bear that took me two days to whittle down and haul to my truck. When I finally got to the truck, I found an old Lil’Debbie pecan pie in the bottom of a hunting locker. I can still remember how good that old Lil’Debbie pecan pie tasted. It really hit the spot. LOL
I'm from Brazil. I appreciate the Meateater content so much that I named my son Brian "Steven". I've watched Netflix content 40 or 50 times completely. Without a doubt it is the best content of the current times.
This was the first episode of meat eater I’d ever seen. I was hooked immediately! But almost as immediately this episode was off of Netflix. So I’m stoked to be able to rewatch it again and again on UA-cam.
We call the burried roast "robbers roast" in Finland. Perfect!
I'm typically not big on just hunting shows but they added culinary aspect makes these super interesting.

i used a boulder once , i built a fire at the base of a rounded boulder then laid my trout just above the fire but not too close and baked them on the rock ! it was great !

My older brother showed me your channel and since then been hooked, your story telling and knowledge not just for the hunt but cooking was what piqued my interest, i grew up fishing in S.E. alaska wasn't much of a hunter here but my brother wants to and it's gotten me excited again about the wilderness here. Can't wait to get on the boat this weekend hopefully we have some luck on our side and do good.
My grandmother use to cook trout in foil but with a few teaspoons of butter in the ribcage and a little Italian dressing.

Grew up on fish courtbullion, us cajuns say it "coo be yawn" it just means "cube bullion/stock" , Usually consists of sweating out a trinity "onions, celery, bell pepper in equal parts" with a bit of crushed garlic at the end.
Add in a few cans of crushed tomatoes, a can of rotel, a few bay leaves and little bit of liquid crab boil and simmer that until it starts to cook down a little and come together, then drop in the fish and cover it for about ten minutes, serve over rice with some garlic bread and potato salad...mmm

i love it. my dad told me that him and his dad would cook trout on a stick when he was a kid.. and his would always fall off the stick into the fire and he would get yelled at. he taught me the foil method...

I have watched you for many years now. I remember the bear hunt and you almost dying from eating it not cooked well enough. I really have enjoyed your hunting and fishing trips. I enjoy all of your videos. These three ways of cooking trout look really amazing. But coyote, I would have to be starving I think. lol

I’ve used the tinfoil method with most of the fish/small game I’ve ever caught. Learned it as a kid from the closest to a mountain man type person I’ve ever met. Usually included onions, potato, and corn. He always called it making hobos. I still do it today 😂

If there is one person that had to choose to survive with it would be Steve Rinella!
We always use butter, ramps, and taters with our foil wrapped trout.
If ramps are out of season use red onions.
Sometimes we add puréed garlic too.
Be liberal with the butter! 1/3-1/2 a stick with a 12-15” trout.
And slice the taters to 1/4” or they won’t cook through.

In Portugal there's a place called Furnas..and it's in the Acores which are volcanic islands and its a common ring to bury pits and cook a variety of foods do to the ground being so hot ....pretty cool...him cooking like that reminded me 😃 lol

I used to cook them on a large flat rock just nestle it down in a bed of coals then stick the fish to the rock when the low side is done just roll it over and stick the other side down and eat the done side while waiting for the second side to cook do this with two fish at a time and it don't take long for a limit of trout to disappear ...yumm

I think Steve would love a good sauce picante "peek-own", you brown your meat of choice and remove it, make a cajun roux starting with trinity. then add in rotel and tomato sauce to make a spicy brown/red gravy. Add your meat back into that and simmer until it gets tender. Put that over some rice with some garlic bread.
Alligator, squirrel, deer, nutria, pork, doesn't matter what you make a sauce picante out of, it'll taste good!

My little family we lived on Jack rabbits during winter and fish.
My late grandma used to make pickled Atlantic salmon she would fillet it de bone cit in to qubes chopped up onion garlic pepper corns fennel 3 or4 lemon slices chopped coriander a good viniger and last slices of ginger put it in a sterallised big glass jar and the ingredients in layers 5months later oh man tastes so good
