@@Joefixesit well I didn't have a screwdriver like yours. So what I had to do was mount my phone to my motorcycle handlebars. Then there was a perfect small loop that went through all the speeds. @@Joefixesit Please make a video on the odometer gear replacement. If you know a good source to buy the gears, I'd love to know. Thanks for making these videos.
@@davidparker9676 you talking about the little white gears that crack? I got a couple from Latvia but there is a guy that follows me on my food channel that has a 3d printer talking about making them. I normally scavenge them from old Gas speedometers or just super glue them back together, then there is the Pot metal gear on the other end of the shaft that comes loose even worse than the plastic gear that I have a fix for. I will start working on a video on just that as I have a number of Old speedometer heads I can use. thanks for the great suggestion. You will se that video soon.
I got one that hangs and doesn't want to move untill I get rolling then it shoots to 30 and I have no clue if it's accurate. What's the best way to go about fixing it
sounds like you have corrosion in the speedometer head. If it were mine I would carefully apply some WD-40 inside the unit and check the magnet housing. as far as seeing if it were correct try it against a GPS in your car are flat straight road. I have a spare unit I know if correct I check it against.
Hello, I have a porblem with my mk2 POLO, I adjust the needle to the mark but I can never get it to work. Its like 20 mph of nomather what I do, I have also tried to adjust it with my GPS in the car but it still of alot... is the spring needed to be clocked somehow?
is this a round headlamp version? I think the speedometer head different? You should not mess with the spring tension. Just moving the needle and putting it back on the pin shaft
@@Joefixesit yes round headlights, the dials are square instead of round, I have not touched the spring just putting the pointer back. Let’s say I’m putting it back when I’m at 60mph and slow down to 30mph the needle only goes down to about 50…
not sure which pin you are talking about, if it is the odometer shaft, it is press fit to a pot metal gear ......you can friend me on facebook and send me a photo of what you are having issue with. I have never seen the speedometer needle shaft come loose. let me know. Ill keep an eye out.
I am pretty sure they are as you can take a MK2 head form about any vehicle and transplant . I would guess yes.. I will ask someone that knows and get back to you
Do you know if it's possible to add an external tachometer gauge to Jetta models with the clock on the cluster? The redline is so low that shifting by ear is no problem but if I can install one myself I'd love to have it for peace of mind.
best if you can find a tach cluster from a mk2 diesel jetta, all you need to do is put it in then dash, the gas cluster does not work for the diesel. The diesel is governed at 4200 RPM through the injection pump, it will not over REV. I know of no after market tech for the diesel.
Joe Fixes It Thanks for the info joe. I just bought a Bentley’s manual to help with my repair endeavors but questions like this just aren’t covered. I’m gonna keep a watch on eBay for a tach, unfortunately used TD gauge clusters go for $200+ usually so it might be a dead mission unless I can get a good deal.
no I never have to do that anyway. they are electronic, plus the diesels do not interchange with the Gas Tachs. VW does not publish any data on the tachs. I only have one jetta Diesel with a tachometer, they are rare
Hi sir..my speedometer is working so fast..even my car running slow,my speedo reads over 120kph..what actually the problem of this..i already replace speedometer cable 2 times and speedometer gear once but nothing happens..can you help me sir?
there is a good bit of information your not giving me.. First I assume this is a diesel. Make sure you have the correct transmission. the gas and Diesel Transmissions are different. Has the speedometer been apart? Normally when calibrating I just pull the needle off and and move it where it needs to go to be correct. The drive gear.. I assume your are talking about the little plastic gear on the end of the cable that goes in the transmission. they are color coded depending on how many teeth they have because are two variants of diesel transmissions on the MK2, your not telling me the rear and model of the car so it is hard to be very helpful . 1: first make sure you have the correct transmission for your engine. there are code charts out there. 2: Correct drive gear 3: Speedometer has been apart? ( Speedometer heads are the same for gas and diesel)

good luck.. let me know what happens

Thanks Joe, this really helped me out a lot man 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
glad to help a fellow mk2 person
This was extremely helpful. Thanks for the video!
glad to help...
Thanks Joe! Same process for Vanagon. Cheers!
Yes good luck
Excellent. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Did you use a lighting dimmer or a fan speed controller?
common dimmer from home depot
Please show a video on removing the gauge cluster from the dash
I can do that... it is not too hard..
Great video. I love mk2s, I've had 7... still have 3. Thanks for this info
I used to have all MK1s but like the MK2s better. I have four running and a 1986 TD project..
How about a vid on the vaccuum system and what should connect to what.
With the diesels there is a vac pump that runs the breaks and the servos in the dash. Nothing really there. Very simple
Great job !
Thanks 😊
I'm looking forward to the odometer repair video.
actually I can do several of those but will do the one where the plastic gears break and need replaced.
Yep - this one too. I have a lot of clusters in the garage that need some love
