Matt, I worked at Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston, SC for 12 years. It's pronounced "oblisk". It is 2 syllables "ah" and "blisk". Hope that helps. By the way, I am a 66 year old recent cancer survivor and in the middle of starting a new business.......woodworking!!! Because of YOU. Thanks so much

It is 3 syllables: ˈä-bə-ˌlisk (hard to see there, but the accent is on the first syllable). Easy enough to find on Merriam-Webster, there's even a "listen" button.

I like this one, So I had a couple of thoughts, First, hinges, use hinges to hold the panels together, set the hinges is such a way that the panels accordion fold, second thought, fasteners something simple like eye hook and latches. To make it easier to set up and take down. Thanks for all your great ideas. You're an inspiration to many of us. Peace

When I first saw the thumbnail I thought WOW nice pyramidal.
What is the pyramid shape? A pyramid is a three dimensional geometric shape (3D shape) made up of flat faces: a base and triangular faces which meet at a point called the apex. Three main features of pyramids are, faces, vertices and edges: Face - a closed, flat surface.
But it's also a pyramidal obelisk.
Just another name for the same thing.
Just a thought enjoying your channels.

My plan is to build this today. I have built the 3 picket planter and the squirrel picnic table feeder so far. I didn't include any variations...on purpose, anyway lol. I learned something about myself with the two builds. Like a great many others, I don't typically build with detailed plans. So, with the two builds mentioned above, I built by watching the videos and taking fairly detailed notes. The projects turned out pretty close to what they should look like but it was after assembly on the picnic table that I realized I hadn't sanded the saw marks out of the edges. That's not a step I would have forgotten with my own builds and I'm not exactly sure why it happened in this case. It feels pretty foolish to think it was because, "well, it wasn't in the tutorial" but that's what it feels like. I guess this is just a head's up to any other knuckleheads like me out there to keep in mind that basic woodworking steps are still required when building from plans. It's like following a recipe and not removing eggs from the shell; "well, the recipe just said to add two eggs" lol. It's nothing new, really, I could probably do a long video serious based only on my "duh" moments in woodworking.

@MatthewPeechWoodworking, good morning. This is an awesome garden trellis. I will be making this one, but first, I have to finish the 3 planters 2 benches project. I am very slow and uncommitted... no I have a very busy life (including a lot of family time) so I work in small periods of time, but I enjoy taking my time. For me woodworking used to be "me time", but now is relax time with my wonderful wife as she got hooked on it now..

Hey Matthew. Love all our videos. One question. How do you store your cedar pickets? I lay them on the concrete floor, raised, with cinder blocks holding them down. They keep bowing and cupping after I remove the cinder blocks. My shop is climate controled as well as the humidity. The humidity usually stays at about 40%. Thanks brother. I appreciate your time.

Hey Matt it appeared that you were measuring at 10 5/16 instead of 11 5/16. I've yet to try this one but plan on starting tomorrow. Not knit picking just clarifying. Also, is there a cut list I'm missing? Lastly, great video(s) man, you are truly inspiring. I'll be joining Patreon ASAP!
EDIT: Finally Lastly: The bottom brace boards are cut at a 10 degree angle on each end. .not 40 degree. I actually built mine today. You still rule Matt!

Have you seen the sand boxes where the benches on the sides hinge down to form a cover, like Badger Basket sells? Seems like those might be profitable, if done right.

  • @skipanardoross6805
    @skipanardoross6805 Місяць тому

This may have been addressed already but in Matthew's video description he states that the bottom boards are cut at a 40 degree angle. Unless I am doing something completely wrong, I found the best fit angle to be 9 degrees (please don't take this as absolute. Do a test cut to make sure). I don't think I'm totally wrong because it's easy to see the angles shown in the video are much shallower than 40 degrees. Again, though, I may be wrong altogether so you'll want to make sure for yourself but I would recommend not mitering the bottom boards until you get to assembly. If anyone knows better, please let me know. I imagine there's a way to take down my comment.

Should the “2 1/2” pickets be ripped to that true size or just rip down the middle and leave it alone? My pickets are 5 3/4”. Thanks for the videos and build ideas! I bought some planter plans. Just following the video for this build though.

Help me out on how you knew how far to measure in on the boards to come up with a 10 degree angle? I may have missed something with the use of the speed square to come up with the angle initially? Thanks for the constructive videos

Not trying to be a pretentious grammar nazi, but the emphasis is on the first syllable (AH-be-lisk). That being said, great build! I'm already thinking about how to build a couple of these for our backyard out here in Colorado!

Mathew, in the video it sounds like you say cut the ends of those bottom supports at 40 degrees? At about the 3:35 degree marker, but that's no where near a 49 degree that you cut. Could you tell me what it is? Looks like maybe a 10?

Hi Matt! Could you please help me. I was asked to make a large trivet, 20 x 18 to be used under an instant pot. I already have two 1x12 boards from another project. They are joined together with glue and biscuits. Do you think the weight(15-20 lbs) and the heat from the instant pot would warp the boards? I appreciate any suggestions! Thank you!!

Thank you. I used to refer to the parts by A, B etc in the videos and didn’t say the lengths. I stopped putting the cut list in the description a while ago due to requests to just say it aloud rather than referring to them as the part letter.

Doubt you'll see this by now, Matt. But, you're pronouncing obelisk correctly. The other way is more of a dialect local to wherever those people live. I took advanced English classes back in the day. Love the design! Thanks for sharing!

Hey Matthew. Love the videos. Own many of the plans. I don't want to sound like that guy but at 2:22. You said measure 11 5/16". But on the tape you pulled 10 5/16". I know some people build it from these videos. Just wondering which it was. Keep up the great work! Though it could have been the camera angle. I just went back and saw you did the same on the first measurement. And it was about an inch off. So, very well could have been perspective :D

  • @aprildegele1510

The first way you pronounced it is correct. Strongest inflection on the first "Ob" part, not on the "el" part.
Oh wow. This sounds very complicated, but I'm sure with plans it's more clear.
    Just a suggestion ... METRIC.
Metric measurements are so much easier to understand when doing something with 16ths measurements. I mean, come on! You could have extended or shrunk the dimensions to be whatever you want, and yet, we have to measure weird multiples of 16ths?
Go with metric and keep it simple. So what if it's not exactly 6ft or whatever? No one is going to know. Division by 10 is easier than trying to figure out what 11/16 is.
I figured out that weird measurements were easier with metric than trying to measure 16ths or 32nds.
I still don't know why we haven't gone to metric measurements. SO much easier to calculate whether length or volume.
