Also...It would be great if the USA would adopt a national "Dark Sky Night". This would mandate for perhaps 60 minutes on a designated New Moon night in the summer that the US power grid would be turned off from perhaps midnight to 1AM. Of course this would never happen, but would be great. It wouldn't just be for photographers. Yes, we are fortunate to have seen dark skies, but millions of people in cities have never seen a dark sky.

lol the power went out many times in history for big cities, and people were calling the police reporting strange light clouds in the sky. They’ve never seen the Milky Way in their lives lol
it's still hard living in the Midwest I used to take my friends a bit out of town to watch meteor showers but knowing there are places about a day away to see the milky way is awesome
New Hampshire definitely has some light pollution problems. Mostly from the population density spilling out from the greater Boston area, but I find not only do the white mountains have the darkest skies (elevation to get above the light pollution), they often act as a light barrier and block the light pollution from the southern part of the state. It's hard to find dark skies on the east coast that compete with the darkest skies I witnessed when I was in Iceland.
That is a perfect point! One thing the Light Pollution map doesn't take into account is light shields like mountain ranges. You are making a great point about finding zones where the lights have been blocked if you have a great foreground there to use. But don't say Iceland, now you are going to make me jealous when I am supposed to be the one making everyone else jealous for our great skies here in Utah! ;) I am going to be in Iceland and the Faroe Islands this September and I am praying for clear skies and some aurora! @@PhotogAdventures visit spiti valley, India. It has 1 light pollution and snow capped peak surrounding it. Plus you can experience what it feels to be on the world's highest mountain range (Himalayas).

Have you ever used a LP filter? I have a Nisi Natural Night filter, and I have used it on a limited basis.
I have not. It is meant to reduce the color of the light pollution and works well if you are shooting directly into or really near into Light Pollution but I almost always avoid it out here in Utah so I won't bother. It acts as a filter and color cast to my image so I avoid them unless I absolutely MUST have one and I really haven't chosen Foreground settings where I MUST have one save for a few. And they would be nice for those moments for sure! Several of them work. I still need to have some fun with them and test each one to see which I like most. Ian Norman's Pure Night on Lonely Speck is really awesome and expensive so I want to test the cheaper options against his and see which ones I could like and recommend for those of you outside of the awesome skies of Western United States. :D Thanks for the question, Tye and thanks for watching! :D -Aaron

You don't know how lucky you are mate. I live in the UK in West Yorkshire. Take a look. I live in constant red. To even get to a "yellow" zone I need to drive 2 hours north of Manchester.
Just north of Austin is the Cherry Springs airport.
All'-e'-gheny park. Cherry springs dark sky park. 4 hour drive for me.
For the last year, I've been wanting to take a one night trip out to Catalina Island to do some MW photography. The west side of the island is probably the darkest place in the lower 48 states. The problem is the possible moisture you might get going out there, (marine layer). You would not be shooting towards any light blooms on the west side of the island. Even out in Death Valley, you can still see small light blooms because you're shooting towards Vegas, SD, and LA.
Yeah that is a good point about the moisture in the air at least the Milky Way core will be high above the marine layer potentially. Exactly on those light blooms because they are such amazing blooms that you can see them on your horizon depending on the direction you shoot. So, we have been wanting to hit up Channel Islands and thinking we can try for it this year. If we make it out there I will keep you posted. Maybe you can join us! We can do Catalina while we are at it! :D Would be a blast meeting you and doing Milky Way Photography out there! :D -Aaron

My area in 2014-2016 sky isso beautiful cuz people can see more stars but after 2016 theres a sky way/express way that almost surrond our area and now its really bright I cant se the "L" constellation(my own) its like a arrow where u are and I cant see it now even the Orion..Its so sad

Late reply but I've only just seen this. Yes, it will help but may seriously limit your field of view.
There are two free internet tools that you can use. The first is Stellarium.com which will tell you where the stars/planets are at any given time and from any location. The second is The Photographers Ephemeris, www.photoephemeris.com/. This will tell you where the sun/moon will be at any location/time.
You may already know of these if so, sorry.
And, of course, good old Google Earth. If you draw a path in Google Earth (or use the 'Get Directions' option), then click on the path/route to see 'show elevation profile'. This will show all the high/low points on the path/route. I have found that by going to the low points, you can cut out a lot of light pollution by using the terrain as a natural barrier. Of course, it also limits your viewing range of view to an extent but that is where Stellarium and the Ephemeris come in.
Where I live (Maine et Loire, France), I get pollution from Angers (40 km) and Nantes (90 km) plus any number of bright spots from the small villages. Using this technique has helped me photograph the stars without that glow.
I also found it helpful to set the white balance on your camera to Sodium fluorescent (if that kind of streetlamp is an issue)

Salut, Senna! Where in Belgium are you? It definitely is a tragedy the light pollution in Europe and the Eastern coast of the US but you can get out to the area beyond Brugge and capture it from the coast when the Milky Way is that far West, only challenge is the high northern latitude!! For instance, Oostende won’t see a night of Full Darkness for a few more months! It only ever gets as dark as Astronomical Twilight. All of Belgium is like that. Otherwise, I would try the coast or Drielandenpunt Area for something. But man definitely a terrible opportunity for Milky Way Photography! 😬 -Aaron
