Funny how epictetus was a slave. I spent some time in jail and man, if you wanna meet some stoics jail is the best place. Most people are perfectly happy, despite their situation, because there's no other way to be.

Wow this is exactly how I was already thinking even before reading about stoicism. I just really have the feeling that no matter how bad my situation is, I always find the good of it and dont really keep complaining like most people would, I just have an peace of mind/spirit that allows me to do that.

Love this and try to live by it. Has made my life better. It's sad though that people with mental health issues don't have control over the same things as the rest of us. Their happiness and thoughts.
Your examples themselves run counter to his philosophy even though they appeal to people looking for more motivation to busy themselves fruitlessly.
Not sure the Micheal Phelps quote fits with the stoic point of view, in fact it seems the antithesis of living in accordance with nature. There are plenty of things that are impossible, what you think about it does not give you control over it. I am of the understanding that the stoic approach would be to do your very best and see what fortune brings.

I think that, the only true thing that exist is what you want and where you want to be, most people have grown frustrated with their lifes because they fancy themselves powerless, because they see things inside the rules and see them unbendable/breakable, we are the ones that decide to play by those rules and their invincibility lies mainly in our minds.
when and if you finally decide to wander about, outside the unbending rail, you might think you're lost or are going to become lost, for everyone (including you) screams and shouts at your stray behavior, everyone is afraid of the unknown, but the power you long for, is in the unknown.

Hi, can you explain why Nietzsche disliked the stoics? I admire him greatly but cannot understand why he would dis stoicism as I also find it good.

As far as I know, I believe Nietzsche disliked the stoics as they were ready to die for their beliefs, and if you die, you can't do anything, be it good or bad. It seems a bit silly to throw your only life away.

i don't think that we do have power over our opinions or our likes and dislikes. For example, I hate country music. I did not wake up one morning and decide to hate it, but there it is. The twang and sounds and stuff-blech. I have tried to overcome this distaste because I hear CM so much in stores, BBQs, etc., but decades of trying have not changed how much I loathe it. I can listen to it and control my reaction to it, but I cannot make myself like it.
Recent findings in neurology do suggest that the Stoics were too optimistic in the things we can actually control. We have lesser control over ourselves than the Stoics thought. But Stoicism was the basis of CBT and indeed it still does help in controlling our emotions, thoughts, and behaviors even though scientifically it isn't entirely possible. It's like a mind trick that actually works and that's what matters in the end.
@@jonirojonironin5353 CBT & REBT pretty much keep me sane. I really don't know where I'd be without the books I have by Ellis, etc.

I think it is.
It only isnt if you arent aware constantly that you will die one day.
In the end all i do is affected by planning how to die and what Ive done before I die, so its in my power how i die and when i die. I cannot live for ever, but I can influence it, so its in my power.
The way capitalism has recuperated even valid and useful teachings such as those of the Stoics is eerie...

I liked the video but the Micheal Phelps was post modernist idea. Stoicism tell you to accept what you can not control not that everything is possible. Rather it tell you to shot for things you know are possible. Then go from there.

Bazin Amaha That's what launched his 12 labors and thus made him worthy of joining his father on Olympus. Hercules took his tragedy and turned it into the opportunity to become a legend. To say "Well it would have been better if it were otherwise" is to favor fantasy over reality.
Although Gary vaynerchuck isn't incorrect. His opinion doesn't leave room for small deviation to allow for something better. If even currently out of your control.
Case in point. To Epictetus slavery was ok. Yes it would seem it's out of his control in totality. But now through the miner actions of many through time we are not forced slaves.

Prove we have COMPLETE control over our opinions, decisions, actions, likes and dislikes? This debate is still not settled and there is a lot of good scientific evidence to back the deterministic stance. Not so much for free will that I have seen. People who say ANYTHING is possible are a little irrational IMO. Still, I use Stoicism often these days because some of this is in my nature to choose. Due to some stubborn programming I use it mostly in retrospect. LOL. Good luck to all.

This is the 21st century, you can change your environment, migrate, move, shut out noise or negative people, reach out & befriend positive people. Instead of being PolyAnna about situations, you can indeed changed things & actually feel better instead of pretending to feel better under damning circumstances.
Sure, things are less stratified than in Epictetus's time, but stratification still exists, physical limitations still exist and I would argue petty annoyances that seem to floor many people are more prevalent than in Epictetus's time, due to hyperstimuli in the modern media environment we immerse ourselves in.
My advice would be to mold the advice to your life and your times, since these ideas are timeless and malleable.
Also, don't be so quick to toss out bits of ancient wisdom assuming they don't apply to modern times. Remember that we are still apes and not much really has fundamentally changed besides appearances and convenience.
