Zen: nothing is productive. If you can’t appreciate this you’re doomed brother. We are eternal and human, so be human. Earth is not for the divine. There is no divine group on the planet. Rest in this.
There is a caveat to not letting things outside of your control affect you; that is, you don't have full control over your emotions in the present, so the proper way to handle adversity is not to try and repress your emotions, but to feel them while also doing what must be done. It's not a weakness of will to feel and to express feelings, per se, but it is weak to let feelings affect your important actions.

Aurelius was known to mourn over loss. Even when the public deemed it unroman like for a king. Also dealing with war and plague. He suffered loss but still had to be strong and just leader and not fall to any form of corruption even when facing moments of despair.
Agreed. Emotional is a sense of self not unlike hunger. It is not weakness to experience hunger. But it is weakness to allow hunger to overpower composure.
Really happy to see this book on such a popular channel. I tried to summarize "Meditations" on my channel as well and watching your work which is btw amazing, I realized there are so many angles to look at the same thing when it comes to Stoic principles.
Marcus was truly a master at stoicism. His ability to lead and cultivate a entire empire is extraordinary. Loved the animation and the content , I’ve learnt quite a few things that I never thought about ! Keep up with the amazing work my friend 👊
I think Adam's statement is more in context with the idea that we should not be driven by our anger and give into despair that traffic accidents happen, and that we witness or be a part of one. When the accident happens your anger and emotions like compassion for the victims, fear for you and your passengers safety as victims, and determination for health and survival will keep you and others safe. Your anger is a tool, that is also a weapon, it is meant to be used, and then sheathed. You are right to not trust that anyone should disarm you.
Remember how long you’ve been putting this off, how many extensions the gods gave you, and you didn’t use them. At some point you have to recognize what world it is that you belong to; what power rules it and from what source you spring; that there is a limit to the time assigned you, and if you don’t use it to free yourself it will be gone and will never return.
Thank you for this concise summary and great animation!. Do you have something on ekpryrosis (sp)The book touches on that.. today’s covid climate has me thinking..
Another great video. Will you be creating more, explaining more passages in his book? For example, I know one of them goes something like "Punish only he who has committed the crime.". If that's the case, then why does the Law nowadays, in some cases, allow people who didn't actually do the crime to be punished? Like guilt by association etc?
Definitely not Hammond - see 3:42 - "Whatever anyone does or says, I must be a good man. It is as if an emerald, or gold or purple, were always saying: 'Whatever' anyone does or says, I must be an emerald and keep my own colour'." - VII.15
Why quote Ayn Rand? Her overall ideas are distinct from stoicism. Although one can use a quote by her, her ideas on a way-of-life can be seen as opposed to stoicism.
Yes her views are quite different, particularly when it comes to altruism. However, the quote is relevant and I like to credit where it originates from. Nothing more.
The quote from Book 6 Passage 21 about willing and wanting to be proven wrong and being concerned about seeking truth instead of holding on to delusions seems to be a lost art of modern people especially when it comes to politics. The extreme tribalism and toeing the party line while mercilessly denigrating the other is tearing the US apart. I only seek the truth and what I believe to be just and right. I'm also willing to give credit where it is due. Many Americans are steadfast with their political beliefs and whatever the other side does is wrong or on the rare occasion they believe the other side has done something right, they are cynical about the intentions. For example, when Trump banned travel to and from Europe at the beginning of the COVID outbreak, many liberals denounced the decisions and claimed he was being xenophobic and jumping the gun with the ban. At the time, I thought it was a good idea even as a liberal but most liberals were rabidly upset at Trump for the ban. It is only more recently that the EU finally banned travel to/from the EU and now many liberals think that's a good idea because EU knows what's best and Trump is an idiot who can do nothing right.
I ain’t lettin this one go unnoticed 😅 intentional, subconscious action or pareidolia on my end I can’t tell but…. They put Lincoln next to a black politician as he said “dishonest and doesn’t keep promises” and the first thing I thought was “Obama??” 🤣
