    For future reference, you can just saw off the top 1/4 or 1/3 of a coconut leaving it a little higher on one side, scrape it out for a recipe or something, then you run a screw through about an inch down with the lower side on the front so it's not too awkward. Don't do it fast or it may split the coconut. It looks very much like the one they make and in a pinch, when a nest falls, saves them having to rebuild. You can take it down and store between seasons.

    I have also read that swallows and house martins prefer a white backing to site their nests, so maybe you can paint your backing board, before you fix your bowl nest to it?

    Thanks for the idea, I grew birdhouse gourds last year to make tree swallow nest. I will cut a couple of them for this purpose. Maybe it will work, I’ll cover with mud and add grass as you and find out.

    If swallow nests are prone to becoming infested with nest mites or other parasites it seems like the swallows might start avoiding a permanent nest once it gets infested. Starting over from scratch or with a rudimentary support that would make it easier for them to build their mud nest structure seems like it might make a lot more sense.

    Heart breaking when you find a long established swallows' nest fallen on the floor from a beam with six dead chicks inside. Yours is a great idea and we will be making new nests firmly screwed to the beams for future years. More info on the actual size would be helpful as maybe it is possible to make a variety of different sizes, not too exact maybe.

      Just happened to me. They built their nest back in 2017 and it fell off a few days back. It pains my heart cause they’re building their new nest in the porch of an asshole neighbor that hates fauna 😞

    Thank you very much for your video. I have some swallows that live in an area that I will soon remodel. I’d like them to stay, but they’ll have to choose another part of my barn. Have you had success with this idea? I really don’t want to outright evict them, but I just don’t know how I might persuade them to stay.

    after 2 min of the video, I have to wonder...why have you not tried it to see if it works 1st. if you have never "convinced" a swallow couple to move in one of those, what is the point? when making plaster of Paris, always put the water 1st and the plaster after. Gloves will make it easier to clean, but plaster of Paris will not burn your skin. it does produce a exothermic reaction but even left directly on your skin, will never burn. it gets warm at the best.

    They attack you when you get near the nest. So why attract them if they don't let you in your own back yard?

    • @kyle8523
      @kyle8523 5 років тому +1

      They are just defending their babies, if you give them some space between their nests you’ll be fine. ;P

    • @vistaprime
      @vistaprime 5 років тому

      @@kyle8523 it's better to focus on nest boxes for orioles, hummers, chickadees, nutatches, bluebirds and wrens which don't exhibit such aggressive behaviours around humans when nesting. I am not sure about purple martins though. They sell nest boxes for them but I am not sure how aggressive they get. I would love to attract a tree swallow but it seems they are aggressive too.

    Why do u want to make them a nest I wonder ! Is this a new estate agency program. These beautiful birds are the symbol of migration, our teachers in that respect. So lets respect our teachers and keep on learning.

    One thing That comes to mind is `Predators` like crows or magpies. How do you or the swallows protect this type of nest from predators?
