Barn Swallows Build a Nest

Although we are in Barn Swallow breeding territory (on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and they breed throughout the Northern Hemisphere) and we have observed swallows frequenting a large field behind our house for feeding, this is the first year they have nested here. If they are happy with the spot, they may continue to repair and build nests in this spot year after year.

Yes! We didn’t catch it on film but they also spent some time checking the spot out and then filling cracks with mud before they began constructing the nest.

I lived and grew up watching these marvelous birds that built their nests in a black angus barn in my hometown I had a wonderfully wrapped childhood with swallows martins and meadow larks
