I don't think Stefan was really ever in love with Katherine especially when he found out that Damon's feelings for her was stronger I think he dated Elena as a do over for Katherine. He wanted to be in charge of their relationship so he made Elena fall for him , to me it seemed like he wanted to be with her only on his terms and prove something to Damon like he could have Katherine now since Stefan had Elena who truly loved only him at the beginning That's why he fought so hard to keep her away from Damon and loved rubbing it into his face how Elena was HIS gf and how she hated and feared Damon. Little did he know .....Elena had already fallen for Damon the minute she met him.
