    I have now watched several of your vid's and find them to very professional. The issues and insights you express are spot on. I've spent many hours looking at UA-cam vids on drawing tablets and stylus's, none compare to your clarity and intelligent approach. Thanks for helping this senior industrial designer choose which approach to take into digital illustration.

    I might have to pick one up. I love my Cintiq 22 HD but it is heavy and I have to use my Intuos series if I want to sit in the living room and draw. I like the idea of portability and when you have to draw for a long period of time to meet deadlines changing positions and scenery is almost a must! Thanks for the review!

    I have the Wacom Cintiq Companion 8GB Ram 512GB Hard Drive and I love it. It is an amazing device and for me it is easy to carry around and easy to handle. I have no issue with dealing with this device and it is definitely worth the money. I got it at the top when it came out and paid roughly $2200 for it and I hear that it is now $300 cheaper. I have the entire adobe creative suite and Manga Studio 5 on my Companion as well and it runs great with no lag at all. I take my cintiq with me to work everyday and use it all day every day. I get roughly 7-8 hours out of it without it being plugged in when it is set on the power saving option. When it is set on high performance I get roughly 4 or 5 hours out of it. Depending on how you have your settings setup you can get a lot of battery life out of it before you have to plug the device into an outlet. The device is pretty awesome and I really haven't even explored all of the other options it has available.

    I have unlocked the auto rotate function and set it up so that the control buttons are on the right as I am a lefty but as soon as i plug it into my mac it goes upside down and doesn't flip back upright unless I disconnect it from the mac again. Any suggestions? It has been bothering me all day and I can't find any info online. I think it said that it does it for a second on a PC but my make does not seem to be doing that. Am I limited to control buttons on my left stylus hand? Thank you for any help regarding this.

    Great review, thanks so much for making it. I'm considering a Cintiq Companion and this is exactly the kind of usage I'm seeking.
    Might you know how well it works with the Mischief software?

      I tried Mischief trial on it, and it works well, but a bit frustrating that you can't pinch zoom.

    First of all nice work on your review it was really up to the point. Keep up the awesome work! But I think there is a tiny problem with the response time of the tablet. Maybe it's due to these heavy programs Painter and Sketchbook running simultaneously. Or it could be the camera you're recording with. I recall don't know so you could light me up. The meaning of this tablet I think is to have your work anywhere you are! But the response rate really let me down now that I saw in your video. Does the hybrid tablet has a better response rate?

    • @crabfu
      @crabfu  10 років тому

      I am probably the wrong person to ask about lag.... I've been working digital so long now that I rarely notice lag on a stylus, when others do. To me, this Cintiq has no lag, unless you use a giant brush. It is on par with desktop Cintiqs, and better than other Tablet PC, and tablets that I've used. I don't notice latency in sketchbook or painter, they are pretty light programs, and feels very smooth to me. When both are running, Pinter seem to slow down a bit on pinch zoom, but the brushes feel ok to me. But that's just me, it's probably best to find a way to test drive it to get the feel. I haven't tried the hybrid, so I cannot speak to that, but I would assume that there is also no lag on the android, and in PC mode would largely depend on you PC.

    Hi, this is a great review! I have a question: Can this tablet work with a Mac? I couldn't find any information for the plain Companion (not the Hybrid), and I'm a beginner with compatibility...

    • @crabfu
      @crabfu  10 років тому

      No it won't work with a Mac, as it is a windows 8 computer itself, not just tablet that hooks up to a computer.

    I'm looking for my first tablet, and I really like this one.
    But I have a few questions.
    Can you carry it around without any problems?
    Do you need a PC for this?
    Does the tablet 'live' long? ( If the tablet doesn't work anymore after the first day, I'm going to have problems with my low budget)
    Is it a good tablet to begin with digital art?
    I may not be able to respond, but. I wil look at your comments gor sure!
    Thanks

      @crabfu  10 років тому

      As you can see in the video, its the best art tool that I've ever used. It is a PC, so you cannot connect to another PC. All of your questions were answered in the video....

    i just got mine and i love it all except fan noise. should i worry about the fan ramping up at times when it doesnt seem like im doing much? thanks, your review helped me spring for this!

    • @crabfu
      @crabfu  9 років тому

      Yeah the fan kicks in when it gets warm, so it could be downloading updates or doing something in the background that is heating up. Overall, I don't find the fan to kick in too much, it's much quieter than many laptops that I've had. Hopefully it'll settle down for you, once everything is updated!

    • @n8jawn
      @n8jawn 9 років тому +1

      I-Wei Huang it's hard to say what it is, but when I draw in SketchBook the fan spins up quite a bit. As long as it's not unusual then I won't worry about fan noise. I've been using a really quiet Retina MacBook Pro for awhile now, so I'm not used to hearing fans. It's understandable that a tablet computer with an i7 processor makes 1 fan work hard though. Thanks for the response!

    • @crabfu
      @crabfu  9 років тому

      I use an older Macbook Air, and the fan on that thing kicks in more than the Companion. If you are using the stand that comes with the Companion, at least it's not on your lap collecting heat.

    • @n8jawn
      @n8jawn 9 років тому

      I-Wei Huang for sure man, the fan just kicked on when it was unzipping a folder of fonts....haha I'm probably just paranoid.

  • @Skittlefarts
    @Skittlefarts 10 років тому

    Hi :) I have a question about the screen. How accurate would you say it is (compared to something like a Mac or Asus display)? I used one of the larger Cintiq's before and I remember the contrast and brightness being really dull, and was worried the Companion might be the same way. Thanks!

    • @crabfu
      @crabfu  10 років тому

      It is ok, but not as good as Mac displays etc. colors are good, there is a film on it that makes it a bit matte and adds texture to the surface. The display isn't as clear because of that, but it's good enough for me. I've had an old 12" cintiq, and the colors and contrast on that was horrible. I also had a 21" at work, and that screen was better than the 12" but still pretty bad. The new 22", 24", and this 13" are all so much better. However, if your just comparing monitors for color correction, brightness, contrast, gamma etc, cintiqs are still not as good as other monitors.

    • @Skittlefarts
      @Skittlefarts 10 років тому

      Thanks so much for the fast reply! But yea I think the Cintiq I used was an older model. I just wish I could test it out somewhere first before dropping 2k on it haha. Thanks again!

    Is having more pressure sensitivity always better? considering iPad has none?

    • @crabfu
      @crabfu  10 років тому +1

      If you care about line weight, more sensitivity is better. If you are painting, it matters less. That's not to say that you can't do digital art without pressure sensitivity at all.... I've seen some insane paintings done with a finger on the ipad. There are some pressure sensitive stylus for the ipad, I reviewed and love the wacom creative stylus.

    Hello Huang! I just wanted to ask you something: have you heard of the Microsoft Surface Pro 3? It's a Tablet PC that you can play games on as well as run art programmes like Sketchbook Pro and Photoshop. owo

    • @crabfu
      @crabfu  10 років тому +1

      Yes, I have not tried it personally. It uses N trig with 256 levels of pressure this wacom has 2048 levels. Surface pro 1 and 2 used to use wacom pens, I believe at 1024 levels, like other tablet pcs, but it's too bad that they switched to n trig. I've also read that the lines are less accurate and more jagged.... But again, I haven't tried it in person. In general, wacom is made for art, and surface pro is geared more towards business use.

    Since this is still pretty new and modern technology, it's gonna take years before these become more affordable for everyone. Remember back when brick sized cell phones were a luxury? Now everyone has smart phones. I dream that someday every artist will have access to these babies, and not be hindered by their wallet. Some day!

    • @travisbertoch5186
      @travisbertoch5186 8 років тому

      It will take far longer for this tech to mature as there is less economic pressure to improve, that's why apart from their patents WACOM have not come out with any great products as there is no need for them to compete with themselves.
      Not everyone needs a professional grade drawing tablet but everybody had a need to communicate. Tech advances faster now but it will still be a while till anything comes close to rivaling a full pc and wacom cintiq combo in a properly portable form factor with an acceptable battery life.

    Hi~ Wei Huang, I've seen a lot of your videos talk about different tablets, I really liked wacom hybrid, but you know they are really expensive. So I'm thinking about surface pro2, or Samsung pro12inch. Which one do you think its better? and how you think about the wacom hybrid? help me out if you could. Thank you :)

    • @crabfu
      @crabfu  10 років тому

      I guess it depends on what you are looking to do. Surface Pro 2 is a pc, so you can run windows software, and can get higher end tools to work on. They use n-trig digitizer now though, so it's not as good for art as Pro1, which uses Wacom tech. Samasung - I assume you are referring to galaxy note 12"? You can see my other video of comparing art tools, I think the note line are great. I only have the original note 10.1 and 2, and I they are great art tools. The tools are limited because of the android platform, but still good enough to get some really cool stuff done. And Wacom hybrid, I assume you are referring to the Companion Hybrid? I didn't get the hybrid version, mainly because you need a pc to run it, and as an android, the tools are more limited than pc. So, for a bit more cost, the companion makes a lot more sense than companion hybrid for me.

    • @Mia-jc5jf
      @Mia-jc5jf 10 років тому

      Thank you so much for the information^^ I thought the hybrid can work alone without a PC connected, I will mainly use sketchbook because adobe is so lag. so I think it will be fine with app in android. Just want to make sure the hybrid can work alone though.

    • @sayresyDevino
      @sayresyDevino 10 років тому

      I have just bought the hybrid version and it suits me really well for sketching and painting. I like the fact that I can take my sketches and plug into a my PC and develop the sketch with the full power of my PC.
      With the hybrid version - the battery life is a lot longer between charges (11-12 hours) - Plenty of power on-board to create some great artwork even in portable/android mode. The fact that the hybrid is a true Cintiq, once plugged into the PC it becomes a fully fledged ~cintiq device and will always be as powefull and up-to-date as your PC upgrades, so does the cintiq.
      btw - no fan noise from the hybrid.
      I considered the Surface Pro3 but to be honest, with a 13.3" screen size and the all the hardware controls built in and that amazing pen and screen....

      Tauhidul Iqbal It lags. I have read a couple of reviews that say the sync is just off by a nanosecond, and it 'drags' behind the pen depending on software, zoom level and brush size, which is NO good in my opinion for something that cost 10x more than my rubbishy regular pen tablet which draws spot on.

    Nice review but really you can't compare the companion to the 'note' that's hardly a fair comparision.. The 'note' or the 'ipad' are running tablet software, you can't just load photoshop onto them, or sketchbook pro or zbrush etc. Really the Companion Hybrid should be what you do a comparison to a 'Tablet' with.. the straight Companion is a Windows Tablet PC. Other then that yeah nice review.

      yeah but I don't have like over a thousand euro's , and I just want a drawing tablet that I can do my art on. I wanted to buy a 13hd but I'm not sure I will have a laptop for it and this runns on its own so it's perfect for on the train or on the go.
