BGM version: • Meyers Manx Buggy Big ...
The Manx Club took over Big Bear Lake, celebrating Bruce's Meyers' life achievements.
Huge thanks to Mike Dario, Lori Ann Dario, Richard Cushman, and all the Manx Club staff, who worked hard to make this event happen. They secured a new venue, Brownie Lane lot, and got a trail permit from the United States Forest Service just a month before the event.
The year 2021 was unforgettable for the Manx buggy community and the entire Volkswagen industry. An artist, inventor, surfer, lifeguard, WWII Kamikaze attack survivor, and original creator of the iconic Meyers Manx buggy, Bruce Meyers left us peacefully in February 2021. Therefore, the 25th Anniversary of the Big Bear Bash, which took over Big Bear Lake again, was held without Bruce for the first time. It turned out to be one of the biggest meets ever. Bruce's spirit could be felt, as more than 300 buggies gathered and celebrated his life.
Special thanks to hotVWs contributor Randy Carlson of Oldbug.com/Carchaeology Lab for offering us a fun off-road ride with his rare Manx Resorter buggy. These unique buggies were four-seater versions of the Manx, designed for use at hotel resorts to cart tourists around. One noticeable difference between the original Manx and the Resorter is the lack of molded sides - it has dropped sides for easy access instead. And it also uses a non-shortened, stock-length Beetle chassis. The total production was only 75 units.
Once we got back in the Brownie Lane lot, it was time to dust off the cars, relax and find a good place to eat, but we were not done yet. The potluck and award ceremony started at 7:00 pm. The highlight was when the new owner of Meyers Manx, LLC Phillip Sarofim, and CEO and Chief Creative Officer Freeman Thomas did very touching speeches in front of hundreds of Manx buggy owners and families. Philip and Freeman also enjoyed the entire Big Bear Bash activities during the weekend.
The Big Bear Bash turned out to be a fantastic weekend - and somewhat of a culture shock. As Bruce Meyers told us last year: "The dune buggy is a Love affair with a family". Big Bear Bash 2021 was a family-oriented, fun event that brought lots of smiles for miles. So even if you are not a buggy enthusiast, it will be worth driving up to Big Bear Lake and checking it out.

My dad had a shop in our neighborhood back in the early 70’s where he would cut up vw’s and build dune buggies. It was in the southwest suburbs of Chicago. I wish I could find one of those now☺️

Couldn't agree more. I knew what a "dune buggy" looked like but never knew there were this many different variations of them. I just purchased an Oreion Motors Beach Buggy which is a modern day replica of those from the past. I only stumbled across this video after searching for videos of the Oreion beach buggy. I'd love to go to one of these rallys to see the original vehicle that inspired my Oreion buggy.

I’m looking for my buddy Dale Rush in the group.
Last I heard he lives in Arizona but I can’t see him missing this event.
I imagine he had a huge American flag flying from his ship
