THE MATRIX (1999) MOVIE REACTION - FIRST TIME WATCHING! AMAZING!

- Welcome to our first time watching The Matrix (1999).
We loved this! A fast-paced action film, science-fiction setting, with ultra-cool style. Written and Directed by the Wachowskis, starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Lawrence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving.
AMAZING! From script to execution, performances and post-production. Hope you enjoy our reactions, commentary and discussion as we watch it for the first time from two different generations (admittedly one of us 25 years ago). We both found it jaw dropping, great fun and exceptional filmmaking.

We hope you enjoy this Reaction Video. Apologies if it's too long (but you can always skip through), but we felt the power of this film justified it. It's more detailed than other reaction videos of this film and we integrated more clips than usual so you can see the scenes we are referencing. We also did a proper sound mix and image quality control of the final output. As a result it took a while to edit and upload (in 4K!). We hope you think it's worth it. This is truly a very important film!
Keep up the great work fellas I love hanging out and watching a movie with you guys.. But I think you’re Son is perfectly capable of watching rated R movies with no problem you’re there with him to keep everything in context think it would be bad if he was watching them on his own not understanding, but since you two are watching them together, I don’t think there’s any issue aside from movies with pornographic imagery. You should actually show him the movie Waterworld that’s a great adventure
Thanks for the suggestion. Yes we think there are some films rated R that are ok. Part of this journey is to help with film language to prepare for some of those classics. @@blizzunt420e
The length was perfect. Do that woth the LOTR trilogy! The sound mixing was much appreciated. It actually came to mind how well it was done as it tends to be a problem with others.
Can we see a reaction to the sequel?
At the beginning, the Episode when Neo sees the white rabbit, before that he asks "Do you sometimes have that feeling if your awake or still dreaming?".
This is actually taken from the Ashtavakra Gita, an old Hindu Scripture where the King Janaka is awakening from a nightmar, in which he lost his Kingdom after a War.
After that he woke up he is constantly asking "Is this true or is that true?" Is the waking World true or the Dream true.
Then he meets the wise Sage Ashtavakra who tells him, that neither the waking World is true nor the Dream World, but Janaka's true Self, the Experiencer who experienced both waking and Dream, is the only Truth.
The Idea, that we are trapped in some kind of Simulation is very old, it's actually one of the foundational philosophical Ideas of Hinduism.
Adi Shankaracharya, who was a very important indian Philospher called it a Process of Superimposition. Mistaking Reality as something false.
The classic Example given is that of a Rope and a Snake. In the semi-darkness you see something on the Ground and get the false impression it is a Snake, when in Reality it is a Rope.
If you want to know more about all this, check out this Video: Swami Sarvapriyananda - Vedanta in five Parables.
Best Regards
This has got to be one of the smartest kids! Not only is he so engaged with the film, but he's so quick to pick up on the complexity of the plot. LOVING y'all's reactions so far!!
Dad was impressed too!
I love how he said Neo should've picked a better avatar with glasses, lol. He totally gets it
Dude! He was missing little things. MEANING, he was so advanced on his first watch that I started hoping he noticed the minor details. Super smart kid!
Your son repeatedly saying "That's a good shot" really shows how well youve exposed him to films ❤
Thank you!
You son; only kid ever to guess “ she teleported through the phone” ….immediately. Wow.
Every other person; “what just happened?”
Yeah!
23:10 I love how proud Dad looked here. "YES - he knows it's a computer program. God be praised: I'm raising an actual sentient being as opposed to the thousands of iPad kids who can't identify a semi-colon."
The Oracle didn’t actually tell Neo he wasn’t the ‘One’. Neo actually said it 🍪
Right. She phrases it in a way that makes it seem like she’s confirming what he says, however, what she’s telling him is that he can be The One, but he doesn’t seem ready to accept that (“waiting for something”).
She said "not in this life"... He became the one after he died.
exactly, because probably, his dead was needed to activate the "the one" program that was installed in his brain, which alowed him to control the matrix like he did in the end of the movie@@Noksivs
Even crazier when Neo accepts the cookies, much like accepting cookies on a website 👀
A good father.. demonstrated by his advice, comments throughout but also in his son’s reactions and comments. It was wholesome to watch.
Thank you both for sharing..
😊👍
Thank you!
I agree, I think it's great that they are watching this stuff together and talking about it.
When I introduced the Matrix to my kids I first had to explain how in the early 90s we were still using our wall phones and dialing up to connect to the internet and how they did that in the film.
"why don't they go into the Matrix to eat food"
me: 😮🤔😐😭 bro that is genius
But the physical body needs food to be alive.😂😂
The hackers like those on Morphious team are "jacking in" temporarily into the Matrix...only their minds are dwelling there, their bodies are still in the real world and that's where they'll get their nutrients. The humans grown and placed in pods, their bodies are fed intravenously with their fellow dead humans. The food in the Matrix is not real, just a computer simulation.
@@th1agu best weight loss plan. 😁
@@th1agu If a bullet in the Matrix can kill you, why can't food in the Matrix keep you alive? I'm just gonna argue that you can't have one of those without the other ;)
@@th1agu because for food to nourish the physical body in the Matrix, one needs to be connected to the pod tubes.
Very few adults recognize that the fight in the subway is an homage to a Western shootout. Well done!
I'm impressed with how quickly your lad picked up the basic concept of the matrix. He's a smart boy 👍
I was 18 when I first saw this in the cinema and have to confess, I needed a couple of watches on DVD later to fully grasp what was going on.
True, I was about 25 when this came out. I needed few watches to really get the idea. I think a lot of that had to do with the times. Nothing like this was done before and it was so mind blowing that at first watch all you did was be awed at the action. Paying attention to the story wasn't even a priority on first watch.
Now most of the action is overused. And some really good reactors can predict a lot on first watch. I'm pretty sure some of them have watched it before though lol. But they definitely understand the plot lot better. This is also because the idea of AI simulated reality is so common now. Anyone on the internet knows about it. Back then it was a whole new revelation.
Different times...
We weren't as hip to the tech as we are today.
What you may not have realised is that the Matrix is a Buddhist film. Question your perception of reality...
@@StimParavane Real truth: Buddhism is a Matrix reality.
Your son: "NOT that many guns!" The average American moviegoer: "Heck yeah!"
💯
🇺🇸 we love our ability to defend ourselves
Love this comment !
As an American I thought they could have fit a few more guns in those pockets haha
Yeppers. 😊
Awesome reflection at the end! One of my all time favorites! Deep as it can get, action, originality
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is the first channel I’ve seen where it’s a parent and child, i love how you inform him about the movies so well!
Check out Sofa and chill :) cute father/son reaction channel
Yeah, and the father kinda looks like Jean Reno :J
I just love to watch how much they enjoy being together & show one another respect! Nice to see these days! 💖 😊
@@TheKatLaRueThanks for the suggestion! ❤
For many Americans, Hugo Weaving will always be Agent Smith. Before he was in Lord of the Rings, he was Smith. And he’s perfection at it🤘
I first noticed Hugo Weaving in a small movie called Proof. And I thought back then he was going to be big.
"You are living two lives, Mr. Frodo. One of them has a future, one of them hasn't…"
:J
@Staffylover-85 lol I just couldn’t speak for y’all! I do watch an insane amount of British tv & movies, but I still don’t know if he’d been in some show or something u guys get that we don’t😃. Not that Americans are the only people on the planet hahaha! I was going for the exact opposite!🤭
For some of us, he's forever Papa Elf
Staffylover-85 Did you read the book though? I, for example, loved the book, but I'm not a fan of the movies either, because they somehow managed to make the whole story extremely boring. Probably because they were more interested in showing off vfx than storytelling.
I think it's a very current and important film to discuss with the new generation. What I find interesting is that the new generation will understand the nuances of this film much more easily than those who saw it at the time.
If this kid goes in to filmmaking then my faith in the future is restored.
Good eye for details and worldbuilding
OK as soon as I heard "spy kids for adults" I had to see his full reaction 😄
from one dad to another, I think you do a great job explaining things to your son.
Awesome reaction! Your son is very smart and it was lovely to see him have understanding and thoughtful responses to a rather complex movie! Can't wait to watch more movies with y'all 😊
Thank you so much!
Such an insightful young man you’re raising. He’s so clever and down to earth. It’s a joy to hear his thoughts on these.
I think it's awesome that you are sharing all these great movies with yer son. He'll grow up very cultured
That was outstanding, and I really enjoyed watching you guys watch it! Now you must watch the matrix two and three together! 💙💙💙
- Did you guys notice the "traitor" was one of the "Fratelli borthers" in GOONIES?
- During the rescue scene, the gaurds were not programs. They represented real poeple which is why Neo and Trinity could out manuever and shoot them. - Neo wasn't flexing. It was quick, but he picked up an M-16 in the most efficient way possible. And the low angle shooting was to make it more difficult for the enemy to get a head shot. There is a "duck/stand/duck" technique when playing any multiplayer games that seems to apply here.
- They can only summon in things inside the "Construct". Which is the loading program before entering the Matrix.
oh yes!
Francis “I don’t wear a hair piece!” Fratelli. Good ol’ Joey Pants.
He was also in Bound, the Wachowski's previous film, and he was one of the most important characters in season four of The Sopranos, arguably its best season.
Your son may enjoy The Animatrix. It’s better than the other sequels and expands the Matrix universe.
It's absolutely better than the sequels. Nearly equal to the original!
His suggestion that the Matrix should have auto-aim is a nice one! And a good demonstration of how far the understanding computers has come in 25 years.
The people can't have auto aim. The Matrix is built on a set of rules that mimic the real world. Smith even said the first Matrix was built to be a perfect human world but the system crashed because humanity isn't perfect. So it had to be designed to what our world actually is. If normal people broke those rules, the system would crash. The cops that were shooting at Neo and Trinity in the building were still humans plugged into the system, not programs. This is why the agents were able to take them over. Only the sentient programs (agents) can bend the rules, even they can't break them like Neo can.
Please consider MASTER AND COMMANDER.
There’s a kid in the film about your son’s age that ends up captaining a battleship during a pirate battle. It’s also a Peter Weir masterpiece.
Yes I think this is a great film for him. It takes some historical liberties but its a great historical drama. Also Blakely doesn't captain the ship but he is given a level of control of the men on the cannon battery during the attack of the Acheron.
I just found your channel and you have a new subscriber!
I was touched by your reaction to Stand By Me, as I am an old softy as well.😂
I'm so glad i stumbled on this channel; wholesome. solid interactions with you guys, smart kid too. Watching more mature films with a parent who can provide context etc is a perfect way for them to grow and understand imo.
Really respect how you are handling this with your kid. Thanks for how you are molding the future.
The Oracle didn't tell Neo he wasn't the one. She let him tell her what he thought and then she said she was sorry and she hated breaking bad news to good people. This is a problem with the way most people think. They jump to conclusions and assume things too much. The Oracle used this because she knew he wouldn't "level up" until he becomes the one by choice and knowledge of his abilities. At least, this is my interpretation of it after rolling it around in my head for a couple decades. :D
She told him, specifically, that he was Not the one. People have trouble accepting this, so they make a different story in their mind, so they can accept it...😂😂
@@malcolmdrake6137 Actually, Neo said that he wasn't the One and she said, "sorry kid, you have the gift, but it looks like you're waiting for something". She never specifically said that he wasn't the One. When he asked what he was waiting for, she said "maybe your next life". He became the One after he died, so he was on his next life.
she gave him a cookie. What is a "cookie" in computer language?
Everything the Oracle said was literal. He was not the one until his "next life", one of them had to die etc etc. Neo dies and comes back to life as the one. Funny you talk about assumptions as Morpheus' is wrong, but as the Oracle explained, he is blind to this, but yet you were willing to take Morpheus at his word instead of the Oracles......
If you want to continue traveling down the Matrix wormhole… the Final Flight of the Osiris is amazing.. and the Second Renaissance 1+2 explains the beginning of the human machine war. 😎
There' been a lot of chatter on social media whether or not this film is still relevant becuase many people under 20 years old havent seen or heard of this movie, despite how big and influential it was in 1999 (reasons given "kids don't know what flip phones are", "the computer stuff is outdated", "the Gen X philosphy is irrelevant", etc). But what I've always said is.. any movie or band or whatever can be "relevant" if a parent can take the time to properly introduce their kid to it and give them context... and that's what you're doing. So, good work... you're doing it right.
Weird how when I was a kid I watched all films prior to my age generation... I wouldn't see why not for morden
At the end, Neo was talking to the source (the machine mainframe), telling it he can feel it and a new beginning is coming. Neo is also an anagram for One. (Side note for the dad) If you're going to watch the second movie, there's a scene in it not intended for younger viewers🙈
The Oracle never told him he was not the one.
What you're doing with your son It Is beautyfull!! When i was a kid i went to the cinema with my dad and now, watching you doing the same but in a modern way it's very good
Glad you enjoyed it, there are more coming.
The reason they use phones to exit the matrix is because back then, internet connected through phone lines. This movie is surprisingly dated technologically despite only being 25 years old.
I do remember it seeming like tech advancement was flattening out in many aspects. It sure wasn’t the plateau we expected, and didn’t take long to hit a big climb again. Turned out we just weren’t looking the right places to really see it coming like that. 😄
….then I watched the whole reaction; your son has such advanced interpretations going through this film, his intellect is astounding!
faith for the new generation!
Hugo’s American Accent is just so so good, I was shocked to learn he was British😭 I truly thought he was one of those Americans that maintained that 1950s-1960s accent😂
Australian.
I wish I had a son to show these movies too, Thanks for letting us join you two.
Maybe lay off the Kek stuff and you would. Sincerely.
when he grow up and decided to watch it again on his own with a more adult mind, he will be so thankful to you for that dad son matrix watching !
Loved your video. Greetings from Brazil!🇧🇷
Glad you enjoyed it!
Can't wait to start watching movies with my daughter. She's 1 now so I've got plenty of time to build the playlist 😁
The Matrix is an absolutely stunning movie. A total classic must see.
they didnt summon the helicopter, trinity requested training on how to pilot it. great reaction!
I am envious of this kind of bonding. The father is awesome for recognizing and letting his son be exposed to mature yet lesson-learning movies. The son is awesome for immersing himself in the movies and going thru thought exercises if presented with challenge. Thank you guys for uploading this typical yet unknown to me perspective of watching cool movies together.
Thank you for watching. Films are always about mixed perceptions. Fascinating. Hope you enjoy watching some more of our videos.
You guys are awesome!!!! The Matrix is so amazing!! Another movie that is also incredible.. but VERY VERY UNDERRATED…. And more of a cult classic… Speed Racer.. unlike EVERY OTHER movie ever made..
My kids are all grown up. I love watching this. The innocence of the child. And such a great dad. Fantastic channel. Thank you.
Glad you enjoy it!
the movie is chock-full of amazing visual moments, but one that always stuck with me is the realtime shot of the minigun ripping across the couch and catching Smith, its just enough to let you appreciate just how destructive and immediate Neo's helicopter ambush was.
54:20 when he asked " is there a matrix 2?" i knew he was hooked! Lol i love it
Trinity kiss didn't make him change like a computer when he died it's like resetting his body!! So he had to die to be the one!!!
You can tell how excited he is to show his kid this movie, probably been thinking about this for longer then the kid could talk lol.
And there are more like this on the list…
6:28 ‘Oh she can teleport or something through the phone.’
You’re a very sharp young man; soaking it all in while paying attention to plot details.
Well done you (both).
Edit: You should try to be a little more optimistic though instead of assuming everyone is gonna die every time there is a confrontation.
I’m glad that I ran across your channel today.
Liked, commented and subscribed.
We read this together it made us chuckle. Thank you!
Really cool how well he kept up. Probably one benefit of being a kid growing up in today’s technology, he’s been surrounded by it. Back in 1999 whether you were 12 or 50 it was equally confusing and mind bending.
So many easter eggs indeed.
My favourite was Neo's fake Baudrillard book Simulacra and Simulation (opened at the chapter 'on nihilism', though not the same placement as reality), where he gives Choi the disk.
Choi answers Neo about distinguishing dreaming or awake with mescaline. Fair enough. I would have loved DMT to have been the reference though. A must try for every adult human in my opinion. The most awe inspiring and humbling experience one can have, echoed by so many, not just my experiences.
Glad you both enjoyed, as did I.
Be well one and all.
One of the best reactions to The Matrix I've seen. Nicely done, and the shades at the end was a nice touch! 😎👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Loved the sunglasses bit
For more excellent Keanue Reeves...
Bill and Ted's Excellemt Adventure 1989
Point Break 1991
Bram Stokers Dracula 1992
The Night Before 1988
Ever notice that Neo is an anagram for One?
Lloyd Christmas didn’t. He was stuck trying to figure out The. 😉
First time on your channel, great reaction, and smart young man can’t wait to see more from you guys
More to come!
I saw it when i was 19 , It was a Mark for my life ...I cant wait for my son to grow up and see this movie with Him and Feel like that again.
Great reaction!. I am new to your channel and already abs love you both! Thanks for this :)
Awesome! Thank you!
Excellent reaction, guys. Enjoyed watching it along with you.
Glad you enjoyed it
It's not possible to get tired of this film.
A Classic movie! Love the reaction x
Your young man is smart there.
As a father of a 3yr old, he seems like he's the perfect age to watch The Matrix for the first time! It's a little "too old", but in a way that expands his horizons instead of being a negative
Yes and also before her found out too much of the film from others
the moment 23:11 when the boy says, "he's on a computer", hahaha wow, he understood it super quickly, that's something that was difficult for people to understand in 1999.
interesting sign of the times with the new generation
i love this trilogy so awsome.
Just found your video, I loved re-watching this movie with you, this movie goes deep into our minds. Subscribed!
Love the reaction from u guys so interesting this film Really draws u you in
The movie focusing on the window cleaners is apparently a reference to Neo rubbing the sides of his tub/capsule IRL, he keeps looking at the window cleaners while his boss is chewing him out, and it symbolizes him trying to break free of the Matrix.
interesting!
Nice job editing. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you too
You may have noticed that when Neo's passport is shown, the expiration date is September 11, 2001. One of many examples of predictive programming in Hollywood films for the key day and event that would establish the trajectory for human civilization in the 21st century.
Or it was just a coincidence. Or the terrorists were fans of The Matrix.
thanks for pointing this out!
The oracle never told Neo he wasn't the one
Looking back, it was cleverly written
"not in this life"... He bacame the one after he died.
"I don't know what you're waiting for, your next life maybe." Oracle to Neo.
Lol your son was really into this movie just wait until he sees part 2
in the hall they were fightting humans
The agents are everyone, and they are no one. They can take over anyone who is still plugged in to the Matrix. Also the Oracle never said Neo was not the one. She suggested that he had the gift but was waiting for something. Next life maybe..... which is why he gets his full "powers" after he is willed back to life by Trinity
Amazing video reaction! Cheers from Argentina
Glad you enjoyed!
Brilliant, thanks so much!
The Matrix is one of my top 3 favourite movies. Glad your son really liked it. I met a few of the cast. I met mouse. The stunt director darko.and one of the stuntmen from the movie.(Michelle) I trained with them for a few months. I know the movie will inspire your son just like an inspired me
Thanks for this. Your video reminded me of the first time I seen The Matrix. ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome seeing you react with your Son. I rewatched it with my lad many moons ago. 💯💪
Wish I woulda raised my kid like this. Good job.
Awesome! I was around his age when I saw it and my dad took me to the theatres to see the rest of the trilogy. Such an amazing movie
@ 9:50: Oh no! They're going to ask him to work Saturday and Sunday! 😂
Epic movie ❤
Oh fun! I remember showing my kids this movie for the first time!
“Cartoon violence” 😂
A great intoduction to very complex philosophical concepts.
I'd love to watch father, son and maybe grandkids, revisit this film in another 20 years, I wonder where the world will be with AI two decades on.
1:06:45 This is lovely, both of you so happy to see Neo starting to believe in himself.
"He's using a minigun. The likely chance of him not hitting everyone in that area is rare."
He's not wrong. With videogames kids these days understand guns way too much. :P
It's so cool to watch it you together :D Young one, are you playing any competitive games online? You have a 'thing' for it like noticing details etc
Love seeing movies through others eyes. Esp those who haven't seen it yet. Looking forward to the sequel reactions.
The Oracle told the truth. He wasn't the One (he had to become the One) and he died when he was shot, heart stopped. Then he was revived.
Интересно смотреть, как подрастающее поколение воспринимает наши старые фильмы.
This was incredibly wholesome and fun. I had to wait about a week until I had time to watch it, but it was worth it.
I would like to recommend _Who Framed Roger Rabbit?_ at some point. I think you would both love it, and it's a real period piece classic with great pacing and a stunning soundtrack.
Went to the cinema when the premier was on. Ha what a trreat as a teen. in 38
I can't wait for you guys to do Terminator!! But only when Dad says its okay!!
When i was the kids age i was deeply into everything the matrix references and takes influence from. so when years later grown up seeing the matrix opening night was so fun and felt made just for me : D
The Oracle said that Neo was waiting for something, it's like some people have the potential to be The One, and since Neo is waiting, that is why he was not The One at the time he was talking to the Oracle in that kitchen.
At the end Smith realized Mr Anderson (Neo) was in the area of the hardline from the beginning of the movie, room 303 was the same room we opened the movie in with Trinity. So Smith figured that may be where Neo was headed for and with the radio wire in his ear he is connected to the others for information.
I think it's really cool that Trinity is actually the first person ever to kill an agent, not Neo.
Yeah, she rocks!
