ROCKY (1976) FIRST TIME WATCHING! MOVIE REACTION! SYLVESTER STALLONE!
Welcome to our first time watching Rocky (1976).
First time for BOTH of us. Does it hold up almost 50 years later?

Rocky directed by John G. Avildsen (Karate Kid) starring Sylvester Stallone (Rambo and many more!), Talia Shire (Godfather), Burt Young (Chinatown), Carl Weathers (Predator, Star Wars Mandalorian) and Burgess Meredith. Written by Sylvester Stallone.
Simply awesome. Beautifully slow paced and all the more for it. We love this film, the tone, it's realism and it's understated vibe. It feels like a love letter to boxing, to Philadelphia people, to Italian Stallions, to southpaws, to none-broken noses and to love itself! Yo Adrian!
Observation in the edit: Rocky punching the carcasses: Paulie's frustration with Adrian first punches a carcass himself. Rocky then takes up the inspiration and continues to punch. Paulie then warns Rocky he could break the ribs of the carcass, and jokes about this destroying Apollo. Later in the fight with Apollo, it's the constant punches to the ribs that weakens Apollo (possibly breaking ribs) and is in a winning situation before Apollo is saved by the last bell. And so Rocky's 'raw' strength directly comes from Adrian and her brother in this way. It's nicely done.

Thayer David played the fight promoter and, yes, he pretty much looked like a toad. Because of that he would sometimes play the villain, but not always. Mickey is ace character actor Burgess Meredith, in films for 41 years at this point, usually in supporting roles. Plus extensive work in television. You would also enjoy him in "Of Mice and Men", "Foul Play" and "A Big Hand For The Little Lady".
Rocky Lost but he did what he wanted to do. He went the distance and even loosing he won.
would pay a lot to watch you two react to BSG 2004.
😎👍 Actually, Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis both began their careers as comic actors, not action stars. Check out "The Lords Of Flatbush" (1974) and "Blind Date" (1987). 🥊
I know, actually I would like to see Blind date again, that film went bonkers if I remember. I wanted to choose films that really defined the actors as the role that was their breakthrough
Lol...your son is funny. That's a terrible ending. Lol They said the scores and Apollo won by split decision. The first Rockg is a little slow, but so great getting to know the characters at that time period as well. FYI... Rocky franchise is a love story with boxing 🥊🥊 Every movie gets better and better. Hope you react to Rocky 2 soon. As a born and raised Philly chic, I'm all in and subbed, looking forward to watching this with you both. Fun facts..The turtles are still alive. Butkis the dog was Rocky's dog in real life and had to sell him. When he finally got someone to support the movie, he bought his dog back. Lol
Ah thank you. I actually think it was the suddenness of the ending which stimulated the remark as well !
This was perfection. Thank you for this!
No problem 😊
I still have a VHS player 😂
Sadly I let mine go a few years ago. Have kept 20 VhS films as mementos though
Great choice! I hope you get all the way to Creed III!
Stallone was given a month to make the film bcuz he insisted on being rocky where the studio wanted a more well known actor at the time like Burt Reynolds, but Stallone insisted, and prior to united artist taking the film, his close friend Henry winkler ( Fonzie from tv hit happy days) took it to abc and offered it to them and they were interested but they too wanted a different actor and wanted to pick their own cast, so when he told sly this, sly said no and told Henry to go back and get back his script so he could go to another studio, the problem was abc usually didn’t return scripts so Henry winkler insisted they give him back the script and wouldn’t take no for an answer, they finally did give it back and winkler later said that the only reason they DID give back he thought was bcuz happy days was a hit show on abc at the time and largely bcuz of his character of Arthur fonzarelli ( “the Fonz”) and he reasoned that the execs knew that NOT giving back his close friends script and trying make rocky with their own cast that they would have picked would have probably been the end of happy days bcuz winkler would have quit in protest so they returned it and then it went to united artists where Stallone was given full authority to cast the film and the rest is history, so if it weren’t for Henry winkler’s loyalty to his friend sly the rocky film we know today may never have happened, just goes to show that there are no accidents
Wow, thank you for sharing this
You 2 look so similar it's crazy
Is it the facial hair ?!
Hey kid listen to me OK please your disappointed with the ending of Rocky 1 OK but you can't see yet that's the beauty of this when you watch rocky 2 please remember why you didn't like the ending of Rocky 1 because you will then understand there's a plan for the Italian stallion.
Maybe Rocky 2 will have to come soon then
@GenerationMediaReaction you bet man lol I love watching your son see the films for the first time I envy you makes me wish I had a son of my own your a very lucky guy my friend ❤️
@@coax47 thank you, I’m really pleased he is liking the channel idea and I’m lucky enough to share my passion with films with him 🙏
Most of your questions were answered at the beginning. He was stuck in his position because he broke to many rules and he was cursed for trying to break tradition and go it alone. Somehow you missed it. He can only be seen by the dead.(except for Lidia, because shes a special case). To "Let him out," you say his name 3 times. Now his magic is stronger and people can see him. To put him back. You say his name three times. He was able to mess with the family because they didnt put him back, instead of saying his name three times, she said, Home Home Home and they went on about thier day. Leaving him out. As he was scaring the family, she ran in and said his name and he was put back. That's why he needed Lydia to say his name. But he wanted more than to get out. He wanted Lydia to marry him so he could break the curse and be out forever. At the end, Mom and Dad could see them because they now believed.
Thank you 🙌
58:43 Was 15 rounds in those days. A few years later in 1982 they changed to 12 rounds.
Apollo was declared the winner. This is one of the few films which had the courage for the hero in sports film to lose the final competition because it credited the audience with being smart enough to know that the hero's journey wasn't about winning the contest because the hero did win. He was an amateur who held out for 15 rounds against the world champion and he will now become a competitive professional fighter and is with the woman he loves.
Well......I think "2" is going to be a lot of fun!!!!!!! As stated, your son is not quite there yet....he will be. In fact, I predict that we will see of some of that growth, right before our very eyes. Great job Guys. A great way to tell just how good a movie was, is to see how excited we are to see the next one, ASAP. Remember, WE had to wait 4 years!!!! Enjoy.
Thank you! Many comments are advising the sequel so looks likes we will have to do it
I watched this with each of my sons when they were your boy's age but 6 has been a while. Nice to watch thru a kid's eyes again. Good job, Pops!
Such a unique film, Stallone's acting iis very underrated his face shows the emotion of a lot parts pefectly.
Thinks he’s excellent in it. You’re right, he’s downplaying everything which is endearing
Speaking of Danny Elfman, alot of people dont realize that hes the lead singer for Oingo Boingo. Songs like, Dead Man's Party and such.
Being able to watch the very first rocky for the very first time as a grown man with your son is probably one of the rarest things in the world right now this video right here is a special one.
Thank you. And I love our contrast to the ending!
The actor who plays the annoying whiny brother Paulie was a very solid professional boxer in real life. It's bizarre to think that if there was a real life boxing match between him and Sylvester Stallone, Stallone would have likely lost!
Rocky was a lonely man, he didn't win the fight, but he won Adrian's love.
You were right the "distance" in a boxing fights it's only 12 rounds but in 1976 was 15, they change it in 1982 after a boxer got killed in the 14th round
Ah, that’s why 12 was in my head
I heard them announce Creed as the winner…pretty sure!
Thought of another Sylvester Stallone movie for you , this one has tons of action, mountain climbing, hanging off of cliffs and chasing bad guys and getting chased by bad guys it’s called: “CLIFF HANGER “ and John Lithgow from Footloose is in it, you can see him in a totally different role!!
I forgot John Lithgow was in this, good call!
@ oops you’ve already seen the movie??
@ at the time it was released only, don’t remember much about it
Philly is a character in the film. Just simply amazing
Yes, it’s a love letter to the city !
Please, open the legends
Do you mean watching the franchise ?
George Washington crossing the Delaware. Apollo Creed reenacting it. Patriotic.😂
Hello d! Hello jay! That was great. Have you ever watched the color purple? If not, you really should. Anyhow, great reaction. I love watching you two together. I'm old as dirt and my children are grown, but it's so neat to see the bond between you two. The color purple. Starring Whoopi goldberg, Oprah Winfrey and some other really great actors that I can't remember their name. Okay, I'll see you on the next one. Bye bye
I enjoyed watching your reaction to the Rocky movie. If you listen closely at the end they announce that Apollo won the fight.
Stallone wrote Rocky because of Muhammad Ali fight. In 1975 Ali picked Chuck Wepner who was supposed to be an easy fight and who cuts easy. But it wasnt an easy fight and it went the distance and Wepner even knocked down Ali but Ali won some say he shouldnt have won. Championship fights used to be 15 rounds, but for awhile now they are only 12 rounds.
Thanksgiving is a big holiday. Nothing is open that day, especially back then. Or they close early. It’s an incredibly stressful day. Not to sit down for thanksgiving dinner is unheard of. I don’t eat turkey but EVERYONE has turkey. What her brother did was horrible. And no one goes out on a date on thanksgiving.
“To me, it’s just Thursday”
It is great to see Father and Son keeping Cinima History alive
I love that you haven’t watched it Dad! You and son are equal!🎉
I bet Rocky 3 and 4 will be more Jays speed since they are upbeat and action packed.
Stallone kept the turtles in Rocky as pets and he still has them
WATCH "Rocky 2"! It is a great sequel. Enjoy!
You have got to watch the rest of these. I think you'll both love at least most of them. Most people don't like 5 (including Stallone himself), but these movies are like national treasures here in the States. 3 and 4 especially will really get your blood rushing.
“He’s in a bad mood, it’s his prostate,” is a metaphor for being a pain in the arse.
Love this line!
Butkus was Sly’s dog irl and he kept the two turtles Cuff and Link who were still alive last I read, just a few years ago!
Tourist to Philadelphia often run up those steps as a challenge and in respect to ROCKY.
Ok…had to look it up…lol $500 in 1975 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $2,933.68 today
We were close!
trying to do a product placement with all those boxes behind you? lol.
Just moved house!
Your son will LOVE Rocky 2!
I like the ending because it's realistic - Rocky just wanted to "go the distance" and he did. He also didn't want people to look at him like he's a bum and then people respected him and took him seriously. Thinking he was celebrating "just running up a couple of steps" - go to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and you'll see it's not easy; it's 72 steep steps. I went there once and started running up thinking it was going to be funny.......I didn't even get up a quarter of the way before I was wheezing. I love when the son said "is he going to wash he face" when Rocky kneeled to pray. LOL
Apollo Creed won the fight. The announcer declared Creed the winner by virtue of a split decision.
This is a love story with some boxing sprinkled in
Fights used to be 15 rds. Now they’re 12.
There are 3 judges. The split decision means 2 of the judges scored the fight in Apollo’s favor. That’s the decision. 2 judges to 1 in favor of Apollo. If u notice in Rocky’s first morning running he runs up the museum’s stairs he barely makes it and doubles over holding his side with a cramp. At the end he sprints up the stairs.
