Only one unofficial source even implied that, and they just said "commonly sold", which is also true of the sponge boy pencil yet I'd never heard of that either. Ive never heard of anyone claiming it was a common item. It was always really obscure.
So, SpongeBob was unintentionally similar to SpongeBoy. SpongeBoy is the friend of The Flaming Carrot. The Flaming Carrot has met Cerebus. Cerebus has met Spawn. There is a line directly tracable from SpongeBob to Spawn.
I only recognize Spawn from a very long and complex line of legal battles leading to DC taking Captain Marvel from Marvel and turning them into Shazam, so the line goes even further into Marvel, which has done a Fortnite crossover, and Fortnite did a crossover with Dragon Ball. OR we can go to the DC route, which has done a Looney Toons crossover, which can go into Warner Brothers, and that can go into anything WB has made. Including JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 6.
Spongebob does *not* know SpongeBoy, so how is there a direct line there to Spawn?? And the SpongeBoy that effected Spongbob's name-change was the single-panel comic art that ended up on the pencil, and *not* the comic book SpongeBoy from the Flaming Carrot series. You just took two giant leaps to make a connection that isn't there lmao.
I think I've only ever heard of this mop like once in passing so I never thought much of it. Your editing and visuals are really cool, and the research you put into this is very interesting. Thanks so much for making this video. I'm a middle school English teacher and used it to teach about primary and secondary sources to my classes. You probably got several hundred views from that haha. This will be my go-to lesson for a long time when I'm teaching about sourcing.
You know, The Flaming Carrot was considered to appear in the 2012 TMNT series, but Nick didn't think kids would want to see that, so they wouldn't let them use the character. Could you imagine if they did and actually used Spongeboy? Anyway, yeah. Spongebob was much funnier anyway.
@@elmaionesosexo That's the difference between the network and the writers. I think Nick just didn't want to pay to use such an obscure characters, and part of me is just glad Usagi Yojimbo got to appear (at the end of the series). I can't imagine the disappointment on the part of the show runners for not being able to use another off beat indie comic from the 80's in the TMNT series.
@@Spongyboi897 If the Flaming Carrot was in the cartoon, you KNOW the Nick owned series would turn that into a reference. Unless of course Nick was hyper sensitive to the license (which they often are) and they had to obscure it.
I mean, this isn't that unreasonable. Pretty much every source was based on hearsay. They noticed a character called Spongeboy, likely trademarked, and didn't look into it too much. Someone could've said "a mop or a sponge or something" in the original conversation, and it just got passed down in a game of telephone. Then when people started recalling it, the rumored version took precedent in their minds so that's what they went with. Nobody really cared enough to check for the original reason, probably because the original reason, itself, was somebody noticing something and mentioning it in a meeting. Of course no one would remember the exact conversation from so long ago very well. I totally think it's the Flaming Carrot comic that did it.
Interesting! I hadn't bothered to check who was using "SpongeBoy" myself, and it's fascinating to hear the real story behind it, and to dive into these sorts of niches in general. (Also, now I *really* want those pencils...)
I've actually never even heard of this theory, I honestly just assumed they changed the name because Spongebob sounds more original. Regardless of my unfamiliarity with the subject, the production value and editing on this was amazing, as per usual. That Flamming Carrot section was so good, actually makes me want to check the comic out
I'm not finished yet but this video is incredible. I have a ton of respect for anyone who does this level of research. Plus, it helps teach and encourage others to ask for and question sources, and not believe everything they hear. Subbed.

Hello, I live in Iceland and I want to correct something. "Svampur Sveinsson" does not mean SpongeBoy, it means "Sponge, Son of Boy". For context of the "Sveinsson" part, the last names in Iceland are not based on family names but based on the name of the father. Thor, Son of Odin is a good example of that naming system. If I had to guess, Google Translate probably led you to believe his name was SpongeBoy over here. Edit: "Sveinn" is a name here in Iceland so it could be "Son of Sveinn" as well.
And even if a foreign name did translate to "Sponge Boy" it would still be a completely different trademark and would have no bearing on the English-language name-change, let alone a US name-change. I'm surprised that BLS doesn't understand how trademarks work.
Leif Erikson is another example. His father was Erik Thorvaldson, and Thorvald Asvaldson was his father's father. So I guess SpongeBob's dad is named Boy, and Spongebob's son would be named something like Steve Spongeson.
@@JoaoPedro-ki7ct google TL does have a thing where users can input translations, so sometimes if you put something into google TL it might not give the exact same meaning for the reason of someone adding a translation (and with how big sponge-bob is it looks like that is what happened) what you could do is try translating with different service, yandex TL is one (though does source some translations from google TL), nother is DeepL but is much more limited in the language selection
I was curious about this, started when the "Spongeboy me bob" meme became viral and decided to check out Spongeboy the mop, couldn't find anything other than "It's a Spongebob Fact". Thank's for researching more! I already gave up due to laziness.
I had known about the the name change ever since I was a kid but I was always told there was another character named SpongeBoy not a product. I feel like one of the other SpongeBob books may have said this.
Amazingly esoteric content. I love it. I've seen about an hour of Spongebob but I was still captivated by this story. Getting in on the ground floor with this channel lol
Fun fact: My first impression of Spongebob was that he looked like Swiss cheese. I couldn't tell what the bloomin' heck Patrick was, as I didn't realize he and Spongebob were meant to be sea creatures until I think it got to a scene where he and Patrick get dehydrated and turn into a photo of a dried-out sponge and dried-out sea star. Also, love your dramatic reading of Flaming Carrot. Are you allowed to do Spongebob impressions in videos? I seem to recall hearing Nickelodeon trademarked his voice. Or is that just stopping Tom Kenny from talking like Spongebob without Nickolodeon getting money or something like that?
Even after realising the show takes place in the ocean, I didn’t realise Patrick was a starfish, and thought he was just a generic blobby creature. To me, he always just looks like a paler, cone-headed version of Grimace from McDonald’s.
Happy to see you make another video! I’m fascinated by these half-true, widespread claims. It reminds me of the claim that The Simpsons wasn’t popular in Japan because they have four fingers. Which always felt like a half-truth/lie. There was a recent video essay (by Slio) where he looked into that claim, and interviewed some Japanese fans. Mike Reiss, a Simpsons writer, repeated the four-finger answer in his book. I think people involved in those productions end up repeating these falsehoods because of a game of telephone. They hear it from a person in one department, it gets repeated…that sort of thing. So cool how much research you put into this! Those pencils are gonna end up in the Smithsonian. Edit: Simpson Essay by Slio ua-cam.com/video/-djKwYhxd9Q/v-deo.html
I actually love this breakdown, it has hilarious context to a few of the earlier episodes of Spngebob that I think were either references that didn't land with the audience at the time or (more likely) inside jokes from the people who created those episodes. I don't know if the doodle bob being born from a pencil was intentional, but either way, a pencil being one of the main concerns that lead to the name change makes having his evil doppelganger a drawing even more hilarious. The sky hook do feel like a direct poke at the Flaming Carrot though, which I think is a nice tough and fit in the Spongebob universe seamlessly.

Something that haunts my memory to this day from this show is back when Jimmy Neutron was about to come out he steps out during the "Hooks" episode while they are playing on the hooks and turns spongebob and patrick into marionettes/ EVERYBODY I have told this story to has never seen that happen. If I remember correctly this was right before the Jimmy Neutron movie came out or was airing so Nick was using that as a way to spread word about the show. It makes me wonder if they did any other wacky stuff like that during the airing of the movie.
@01:39 Icelander here, Svampur Sveinsson directly translates to Sponge Sveinsson. Even though sveinn can mean boy it's not a commonly used word and is more common as a first or middle name. In this context it would mean that his father's name was Sveinn (Sveinsson = son of Sveinn). I think Sveinsson was chosen simply because it's phonetically melodic. :)
What a great video. I loved the part with Flaming Carrot; it can't be a coincidence that SpongeBob has an adventure with sky hooks himself in one episode somewhere.. Right? Love the reference!

Including JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 6.
the fact that it connects to cerebus is already fuckin wild
@@optimisticwatermelon So we can go from JJBA6 to Doug apparently.
@@ExtremeWreck Yes.
Although I don't think UA-cam favors the time it takes for the quality, I hope more people find your channel because all your videos so far have been great!
This is yet another example of how it's nearly impossible to find 100% true information online, especially about more obscure subjects. Great video!
Thanks so much for making this video. I'm a middle school English teacher and used it to teach about primary and secondary sources to my classes. You probably got several hundred views from that haha. This will be my go-to lesson for a long time when I'm teaching about sourcing.
What strikes me most about this well documented, well edited video Is how it eventually reached an obscure Cerebus issue and even reads it.
You know, The Flaming Carrot was considered to appear in the 2012 TMNT series, but Nick didn't think kids would want to see that, so they wouldn't let them use the character. Could you imagine if they did and actually used Spongeboy?
Anyway, yeah. Spongebob was much funnier anyway.
such a missed opportunity for 2012 TMNT
@@elmaionesosexo That's the difference between the network and the writers. I think Nick just didn't want to pay to use such an obscure characters, and part of me is just glad Usagi Yojimbo got to appear (at the end of the series). I can't imagine the disappointment on the part of the show runners for not being able to use another off beat indie comic from the 80's in the TMNT series.
I could imagine SpongeBoy having a voice similar to SpongeBob, and actually wearing a red tie
@@Spongyboi897 If the Flaming Carrot was in the cartoon, you KNOW the Nick owned series would turn that into a reference. Unless of course Nick was hyper sensitive to the license (which they often are) and they had to obscure it.
Imagine if they had gotten Tom Kenny to voice Spongeboy in TMNT 2012
This is such a pedantic, useless video. I love it so much, amazingly edited and scripted, a wonderful watch.
It's useful in how it shows how easily misinformation can spread
Big mop once again using its power to kick down the animation industry
I love your outro music. It perfectly encapsulates the 90's TV shows growing up as a kid.
Man this video was so well written throughout. The narration, the editing - Great job on all of it
I mean, this isn't that unreasonable.
YOOO IS SPONGEDUBS
I've actually never even heard of this theory, I honestly just assumed they changed the name because Spongebob sounds more original. Regardless of my unfamiliarity with the subject, the production value and editing on this was amazing, as per usual. That Flamming Carrot section was so good, actually makes me want to check the comic out
It is fact
the amount of research, the quality production... this channel is so underrated!! i just need more vids ;--;
All of the spongebob clips and memes perfectly added at the right times really make this video feel warm
Those custom CRT b-roll shots are absolutely awesome, and the custom voiceovers! Super cool. Love how you go the extra mile for these!
I'm not finished yet but this video is incredible. I have a ton of respect for anyone who does this level of research. Plus, it helps teach and encourage others to ask for and question sources, and not believe everything they hear. Subbed.
This channel is so sick. This topic is immediately interesting. The SpongeBob CRT shots are great.
Thanks for making quality content in this age era of mass-produced mediocrity.
Age era of mass produced mediocrity? As in the last century and a half we have been able to mass produce media for a mostly literate populace?
13:41 I'm getting the eclipse vibes from Berserk here. They definitely took inspiration from it.
I'm literally a researcher and I'm flabbergasted by the amount of research that went into this - well done this is so satisfying to watch!!!
I'll be vague so I don't spoil the video, but after seeing the SpongeBoy [product] I can absolutely see why Nick's legal team was worried.
Looks like Patrick
11:15 Suddenly it makes sense why the comic is 3D
The flaming carrot comic where the hook catches spongeboy is a lot like the episode "don't look now", maybe an inspiration of some sort? (also Hooky but it wasn't so similar)
4:29 lol Tom Kenny changes voice 😂
Hey! At the bottom of that paper at 4:58 it has the Fruit Of The Loom logo which has the cornucopia in it! Fruit Of The Loom said it’s never had one in its logo and it’s one of those Mandela Effect things
Damn good find
What does it mean?
@@wvminecraftkid It means there's mischief afoot.
A pencil is a wooden rod that can clean stuff off of a surface with its eraser, that's a mop in my book.
Interesting, because when I put it in translate, it came back as SpongeBob SquarePants. Hmmmm. But I believe you!
@@JacobHayden911 Because it's a substantive, and Google Translate sometimes is able to understand the context.
1:18 I actually still own one of those little TVs lol, along with the little disc player and remote it came with, all SpongeBob themed
I had known about the the name change ever since I was a kid but I was always told there was another character named SpongeBoy not a product. I feel like one of the other SpongeBob books may have said this.
An inspiring video! Very very good work here! This is the sort of stuff that inspires me to make content.
Surprised to see you here quinton
Ah an actual content creator I see. Keep up the progress.
This video is top tier! The voice actors did a great job!
Amazingly esoteric content. I love it. I've seen about an hour of Spongebob but I was still captivated by this story. Getting in on the ground floor with this channel lol
13:25 the 'ooo' made me laugh so hard
But...but...its in the name
@@erinkinsella91
I switched the channel to it mid-episode, so I didn't learn his name for a bit, ha ha.

The reason why the Simpsons isn't as popular in Japan because it has a more mean sarcastic style of humor than most things in Japan.
14:42 "Oh, so now the TALKING CHEESE is going to PREACH to us?!" 😂
😂
theres also an episode where, after losing his memory, spongebob gets named "cheeseman brownpants" by some strangers!
@@_p1xI saw that episode
The amount of Spongebob references you packed into this is mind boggling, thank you for this wonderful video!
4:58 Is that a Fruit of the Loom logo WITH a cornucopia out in the wild?
Adds more context to the line “SpongeBoy me Bob!”
14:52 I kinda like these original more exaggerated ditzy designs. I can see why they didnt adhere to it too much but its cute.
This is the highest quality video I’ve ever seen. From the clips to the editing to the voice acting for the comics it’s all stunning
Why has nobody pointed out the Cornucopia on the Fruit of the Loom logo at 5:00?
It's been edited here as a joke. I just had to check the original paper (Tampa Bay Times).
lol i was just abt to say
@@PlanetBloopy Shortly after I wrote that comment, I looked it up too and I was quite irritated that it bad been edited. It did have a Cornucopia, I know it did. It's not something to joke about lol
1:27 Squidwardd here inadvertently almost hitting on the truth with the comic answer so early on (probably not referring to the strip but still) is funny.
so glad you made this. the whole mop story always confused me because i too could never find any evidence about the mop.
I believe I've used those sports pencils as a kid. I want to say they were the really cheap kind, lol. The kind that when you sharpen them, the plastic print on the pencil would jam up the sharpener
You likely have.
I don't doubt it.
@@KKHell Yeah, "sharpened," lol! The second that graphite hit the paper, it would snap off, and that was only you'd shaved it down in the sharpener without it breaking there, where it probably had a couple times already
I remember getting a pack of yugioh branded pencils, but they were so cheap the whole plastic fell off of them after 1 sharpening
Woah you just unlocked a deep memory with that one, I think I had ones with the Simpsons on or something or maybe even actual Spongebob ones but I know exactly what you're talking about with the pencil sharpener thing lmao. They always super thin and scratchy to write/draw with too.
2:29 So happy to see you included that mention of the SpongeBoy name on the show's first DVD release.
July 2024 update: a set of Spongeboy pencils were just sold on eBay 34 days ago and the listing includes a picture of the back of the packaging. Hopefully Kid was the winning bidder lol
I couldn't have been more happy when finding and then watching this video. I love videos like this, that tell facts and little backstories for well known shows.
this videos super well done! i love the presentation and the spongebob crt, heck seeing you use the real font and even call it by name is really cool cause most spongebob videos dont research that kinda stuff, even the fact that you used the stereo versions of the bfbb music is awesome cause most people dont know those got released, major props, you for sure earned a sub!
This was my first introduction to your channel and I’m so shocked! It’s all severely well done! Thank you so much for finding the true answer to this mystery.
Holy shit I was not expecting to see Cerebus in a video about SpongeBob. I actually read through some of the first few books earlier this year (which are, in and of themselves, a *hell* of a deep rabbithole) and I remember the story about Flaming Carrot pretty well, but forgot all about Sponge Boy until I saw it again in here.
Excellent video.
Thank you for debunking the SpongeBoy mop claim. Ever since I first heard about it, I knew something was fishy. However, I didn't have the energy or time to actually look into it myself.
Hehe...fishy
i swear this video had a different thumbnail
I always thought nick didn't like the name so they told legal department to tell the crew a lie so the creators would get mad at an imaginary mop and not the nick higher ups
Another killer video Stoop. Always happy to see what obscure topic you dive into next. Amazing research and fantastic production quality. Keep it up my friend; you inspire me.
Thank you for the consistent words of support! You inspire me too. Your Vortex video helped set the Spyro tone of the channel for most videos
Anyone else notice at 4:58 the Alan Jackson ad presented by Fruit of the Loom has a cornucopia??
This dude is slick either he edited the Fruit of the Loom logo in this video or he has proof in this video that it used to have a cornucopia look at the newspaper with Alan Jackson
It looks very legit tho, however, if it is edited, then the person who edited it must be master graphic designer! It looks freaking real
I know it's a weird thing to comment on, but your voice work is fantastic. You pause at the perfect times for the perfect amounts of time, and your annunciation is great. You also just have a nice voice in general. Seriously, great stuff.
i wanted to say this. dude just speaks incredibly well. makes you want to come back and just listen to relax like a classic radio host
I love how a simple cartoon like Spongebob had the craziest theories and facts.
I love how you set it up to be a conspiracy around Tom Kenny’s verbal account just to pull the rug and reveal the trademark to be a pencil.
Best editing I've seen in a WHILE. Don't change. It made it so enjoyable to watch. I thought the video was a YTP at first ahaha
A great video! Really loved the part about the Flaming Carrot, you could have just mentioned there was a character called like that on the comic, but instead you chose to show us a peek of what was the comic about and how i ended, it was a fun ride!
Holy crap this is a great vid but I found something at 5:00 idk if it counts but that's the fruit of the loom logo with the cornucopia in it. It's to the left right next to Alan Jackson's face lol.
It genuinely makes me so happy when people put this much effort into researching cartoons or video games.
I never realised the title said spongeboy

Incredible production, amazing how quickly misinformation spreads.
I think another issue was that it was stated that you can take an inanimate object and add boy at the end to make it come alive. But it isn’t exactly the most unique way to name a character. I wouldn’t be surprised if the legal team also just wanted a name that was more unique and easier to protect in general
I love the fact the entire video is just filled with battle for bikini bottom osts, brings back many memories
