Afro-glam metal band Living Colour likes solos like that. The band Porcupine Tree also sometimes like to put dissonant guitar solos to contrast with their typical melodic sound and atmosphere.
Otto has simply mastered his own strings. People who play standard tuning couldnt ever possibly understand especially if I described it. Its way too much genius.
People have made drum and trombone equivalents, but the guitar is the one instrument that is truly NEVER animated correctly. The finger positions and rhythms make it way, way too expensive
That really sums it up nicely! Money is really the limiting factor here, and even if they had a large budget, they would probably want to spend that extra money animating something else.
I think some anime series done it the right way too, but the downside was minimizing angles where instruments are shown or even having bands... rarely play at all, to save animation budget.

I used to be in a band with a lefty guitarist who played with a righty’s string configuration (low notes on the bottom); he could shred that thing to pieces lol. Blues legend Albert King did the same.
@@starlxy you misunderstand, unless you restring the guitar. if you take a left hand or right hand guitar and play it with the other hand the strings are upside down completely changing the notes on the fretboard.

It’s because the animators are not guitarists. They are animators. Also something to consider is they may not have had the guitar music sent to them yet. Wouldn’t be uncommon to just be told “it’s 5 seconds of guitar playing”.
Nah, I'm a guitarist and an animator. I just wouldn't waste time getting the animation exactly right for a 10-second clip in a weekly cartoon. Animation takes a long time and is very expensive. Especially for a television show, the name of the game is SPEED. Now for a film production like Pixar where the production cycle is 2-4 years, they can afford to send their teams on locations, consult with experts, and focus on perfect accuracy. But that's not really a reasonable expectation of a show like this. You're looking at thousands of dollars per SECOND of animation for cheapo TV animation like this.
Nice vid. This has always bothered me, not so much in animation, but in films. You can tell in certain films, how it's clear that no one on set has ever picked up a guitar before. In fact I will judge the quality of a film by how well or badly the guitar is done. I have walked out of films over it in the past..
What you have to keep in mind is that this was the early '90s. Otto was probably toking on that bus, and everyone else on that bus was affected as well. Therefore the sound we're hearing is impressionistic, not realistic. Which, you try drawing 30 times per second. It's a terrible strain on the animators' wrists.
Actually Metalocalypse took great care to animate the guitar animations accurately; they are literally the only ones I know of to have done this however.

I've done some animations, and i'll tell you, the animators can't be fucked to animate it correctly unless they're told to. and with a weekly upload schedule they have to follow, something like correctly animating music playing is usually ignored. love your cover tho, sounded awesome

Gonna be the pedantic party pooper and say yes obviously the guitar playing isn't animated correctly, but there is still _some_ correspondence between what the animators are doing and what we're hearing. Really look at Otto's three fingers on the seven fret fingerboard (lol) -- if it were transcribed more studiously it wouldn't be just noise, it'd be a bunch of noodling on pentatonic shapes on the first five frets of the guitar. Now I want to see what Lisa's hands are doing when she's playing that one protest song outside the power plant and also throws in a little Classical Gas per audience request lol
