@Marie V. We adoptees aren't shown any kindness either. If we act upset at all about not being able to know who our moms are, then we are deemed insane and forced to endure tortures like Attachment Therapy or sent to shrinks who give us bad drugs. Yeah, we've all been there sometime, always wishing we knew what we know now back when we were rebellious teenagers, but unfortunately life doesn't work like that, we all have to make mistakes, especially at that age, how else are we ever going to learn about life? I'ts whether we learn anything is the question, and what we do to correct those mistakes, and how we lead our lives, or do we dwell on something that can't be undone, and so ruin our future happiness.
Gosh. So simple and visceral. The character Sally was played by quite an exceptional actress. Great chase scene, with the Patriot WW 2 veteran Drew, and the bad leg. And of course it’s pity for the other that ultimately unites them. A film like this in 1944 was extremely risky, and unusual. I’m not certain but I’d wager this was a popular film that had good ticket sales. Great writing, simple, sentimental and poignant. A+ for sure!

There's something cozy and soothing about old black and white movies such as this. You suddenly transported back in time and a different world. apart from wartime, a much better world. Where people still cared and tended to be nicer. I also love the old style of clothes, cars, and stores. No filth like today's rubbish with no story. people had morals back then. thank you for sharing. I'd swap those days for these anytime.
This was the reality into the 1960s. I'm 74; at least one of my classmates (HS class of 1964) "went away for a while," and two more married very quickly upon graduation and had babies after 6 or 7 months. Lovely and wrenching performance by Sally Forrest, who reminds of Nicole Kidman. The landlady character had to be the inspiration behind Lily Tomlin's Ernestine the Operator-dead ringer!
My friends mother was a nurse & they hosted a series of pregnant girls in the 70's, till the babies were born and delivered to their adoptive parents (Missouri).

Very touching story of a young girl who fought against all social norms just for seeing her child. Very real, very emotional. Tear jerking from beginning to end. I cried while seeing it. Every actor so appropriate that it hurts. Hats off to Ms Ida Lupino, the director, for such a great film. I am ashamed that I never seen this nor heard of it. One of my favorite movie from now on.
He came back too late. The story had a "happy" ending because she finally got a husband, uh? Yeah, I know, it was this way back then... but there is a great loss, and the idea that emptiness would be filled with a husband, just because being a wife was the main purpuse in life, does not return the baby. It is a heartbreaking movie. I am happy those days are over.
And people are happier today? The implication of what you wrote is that in most respects, being a wife and mother in those days (and today, for that matter,) was (and is) a fate worse than death. Doubtless there were some women who might have wanted more out of life (as would a great many men of the time,) but one does not get the sense from people of that era that they were living lives of quiet desperation. For the most part they found greater happiness and a greater sense of fulfilment in their lives than people today. People today live temporary lives, without permanent moorings, and without deeper meaning.
@@jamesrogers47 I said "are over" about the days when women were not strong enough to carry on with motherhood WITHOUT a husband, and preferred to give a child away than the "shame" of being a single mother and raise their children alone. In fact, a widow could raise several children because "it was proper" and she was "honest" but an unmarried woman didn't. What you say about marriage is YOUR interpretation, I never wrote a word about that. In fact I agree with you, I believe people were happier and accepted more the responsibilities of married life and raised children much better. I am a single mother literally, raised my child alone and did it very well -I think- and am a grandmother now. But I remember the days when I watched my girlfriends going out with their boyfriends on Saturday nights, when I had no date I could not go with them because it was not allowed for single women to enter night clubs. Do you like that kind of life for young women? Or a woman asking a husband for permission to go out to the movies or for a sandwich? Like the song "Don't tell me what to do And don't tell me what to say Please, when I go out with you Don't put me on display" The first wives club
I mean, wouldn't you be happy to have someone you were in love with come help you with that level of emotional distress? I get what you're saying, but to me that's a much happier ending than what she'd get otherwise.
Steve was an unfeeling, selfish creep. I loved Mrs. Stone - so kind, caring and understanding. Drew was sort of dorky but would have made a good husband for Sally. He clearly loved her, despite the taboo circumstances of the day. Great wardrobe!

ONE FAILED ATTEMP TO JUMP DIDN'T PAN OUT, SO SHE'S ON THE RUN AGAIN. HE WAS RUNNING HIS HEART OUT TO CATCH UP WITH SALLY. AFTER ALL THAT RUNNING & LIMPING, HIS LEGS GAVE OUT. SHE TURNED AROUND & SAW HIM ON THE GROUND. HE LOOKED AT HER & SAID PLEASE. SUCH PAIN IN HIS LEGS, BUT MOSTLY IN THE HEART. SHE FINALLY RAN TO HIM & FELL INTO HIS ARMS. BOTH WERE CLINGING TO EACH OTHER FOR DEAR LIFE. GLAD THEY FOUND EACH OTHER. P.S. HE WOULD OF ADOPTED HER SON AS HIS OWN.
Darn Sally could run. I' m glad she didn't push the guy onto the train tracks accidentally. At least, she had the decency, to go back and help him when he fell. I think I would have said the heck with her, and wish her well.
THIS IS A TEAR JERKING MOVIE FOR SURE. THE ENDING GOT ME REAL HARD. GLAD SHE CAME TO HER SENSES. SHE NOW HAVE SOMEONE TO LOVE HER. GLAD SHE DIDN'T JUMP TO HER DEATH.
Best part for me was when she was listening to the music and the babies were crying. The song was “a-hunting we will go” which was about catching and letting go various prey after doing something to them. The first guy caught her lust and impregnated her, the second guy caught her idealism and let go after she found out she was pregnant, and the baby caught her love but had to let the mom go so it could live a better life.
This was a compelling screenplay and beautifully produced/directed and the lead's acting was so convincing. Reminds me tremendously of my own daughter, except she came to her parents with regrets but no fear. I'm thankful for that every day.
for real. Most do, especially a girl this young. She ran from her parents to chase the man, and then was too proud to return. It is a melodrama, and she therefore makes many things hard on herself. This movie was remade in 1982. "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" the Stacey plot. For all the modern choices for that 15yr old, the institutions were much colder, darker and relatively heartless. The "Free" Clinic even charged her $150 and she was back on the street in a few minutes with no compassion.
Terrific upload ... thanks a million; nothing beats these classics, simple story line, but it holds your interest to the end, great acting--no showcasing just honest performances.
Every young girl should see this well-made film. So many of them have been led to believe that being a single unwed mother is easy. We need to return to sane and intelligent traditional values.
"Not Wanted" (1949) is a powerful and captivating film about a 19-year-old girl who experiences an unwanted pregnancy. The story takes you through all of the challenges she faces, the emotional roller-coaster she rides, and the heart-wrenching decision she has to make. She is nowhere villainized, but neither are her unwise choices glossed over which led her into her predicament. The intimate and indissoluble bond between mother and child is presented with a realism that casts the modern option of "abortion" out of every viewer's mind. In fact, abortion is never hinted at as a possibility in this movie - as it never should be! The difficult circumstances presented take place within the protective walls of a Christian-based society. The plot is intelligent, romantic, and gently moral, but it carries a meticulous realism that doubtlessly comes from the input of the film's medical advisor. As such, "Not Wanted" seems more like "reality TV" than fiction. I highly recommend it to anyone who is being influenced by the "pro-choice" lie, or to any woman who is considering having an abortion. Abortion is the worst choice for a woman, and no choice at all for her baby!
Yes, it did not go into the choices the FATHER made which led to her "predicament." She didn't get pregnant all by herself! Boggles the mind how a man like you, who will NEVER find himself in a gut wrenching position of an unwanted pregnancy, feels he has the right to say what is the right choice for a woman. It is none of your business.
@@patricias5122 Right and wrong goes beyond one's particular gender. It is always right to choose life for your child. As for the biological father in the movie, his self-absorption and sin was so obvious, there was very little need to dwell on it deeply in the film.
All women have a choice what to do with their own body!!! This should never be revoked. The idea is simply archaic! Pro choice is another word for...freedom.
@@marytarantinoo9118 The child's body is not the woman's body. Though dependant upon mom and connected with mom, the child is a unique human life with a unique body and soul. Just for a reminder the Latin word "fetus", which we use to describe the preborn child, means "offspring".

Again a gem of a film, so moving with no vulgarity to spoil one's enjoyment
Well done. I'm so into old movies because of the great acting. Very few actors today are gifted. So glad I found this movie.
Some overdramatize but not this movie.
There are some amazing actors today!! Old movies are just different...slower, more about values such as helping your neighbour or family...etc.
You had good 'and' bad actors then, and you got good 'and' bad actors now! I love the acting in the current comedy hit Portlandia [for example]!

She was very fortunate to find such a compassionate home for unwed mothers. The women were so compassionate even after the adoption took place, she felt comfortable enough to go back there for emotional support and they provided it. Such a sad story.
@Marie V. We adoptees aren't shown any kindness either. If we act upset at all about not being able to know who our moms are, then we are deemed insane and forced to endure tortures like Attachment Therapy or sent to shrinks who give us bad drugs. Adoption is totally geared to the adopters because they have money and the agencies want it. Adoption is child trafficking/child abuse period. I wish it was illegal.

Sunni Harley - who are you people? I wasn’t the only one?! Thank heaven. All that energy thrown away. I wish I could unsee it all. To late.
Of course she was stupid. We were all stupid at 19.
Excellent film, enjoyed it, Ida Lupino was a very good director!
My only confusions was when Sally was pulled over by the cops in Steve's car. Where was Steve and what happened to the car? BTW it was a 39 Ford.
This girl needs Direction purpose she should be attending school getting an education instead of chasing a two-bit dime-a-dozen piano player
Remember the Piano Man by Billy Joel?😎
Parental love and guidance is very crucial.

There's something cozy and soothing about old black and white movies such as this. You suddenly transported back in time and a different world. apart from wartime, a much better world. Where people still cared and tended to be nicer. I also love the old style of clothes, cars, and stores. No kidding....I was just thinking his character is the most overlooked, and I'm glad she wound up with him
This was the reality into the 1960s.
Spot on...on both counts!

When Movies Were Movies cant compare to todays, my favoroites.
Don't be ashamed! I had my fill of shame from the plot, lol!
Like the song "Don't tell me what to do
And don't tell me what to say
Please, when I go out with you
Don't put me on display" The first wives club
James Rogers many were living lives of desperation! 🙄
I mean, wouldn't you be happy to have someone you were in love with come help you with that level of emotional distress? I get what you're saying, but to me that's a much happier ending than what she'd get otherwise.
Very good film ,bit depressing but very real

Reminds me tremendously of my own daughter, except she came to her parents with regrets but no fear. I'm thankful for that every day.
Awwwwe, that's wonderful that your daughter had good parents to help her.

Every young girl should see this well-made film. So many of them have been led to believe that being a single unwed mother is easy. We need to return to sane and intelligent traditional values.

But we shouldn't return to making life impossible for single mothers and forcing them to give up their babies!
Drew runs extremely well for an amputee wearing an artificial leg, but good film anyway.
A beautiful ending. Love this story
