Overall … have you made or lost money in the hobby? If it’s truly regarded as a hobby then you don’t really “lose” money, but let’s be honest…are you up or down? Also, luckily im a big fins fan and no one bet on Tua this year, I did. MVP candidate, cards have gone up and up. Peace brother.
My biggest L investment has to be Lamelo Ball. While yes he is good, I was buying at peak hobby times during covid. As we all know prices may never go to what they were (which is a good thing for collectors). Then you also count that Lamelo has an injury bug it just isn't producing an ROI for me that is good.
I think what some new collectors don’t understand is print runs. There’s cards like that Luka that were so over printed that I don’t see them as a good investment, because even if he does great things there’s so much supply . I felt like cards like that started dropping when PSA backlog started catching up and people realized how many there were . If I was buying to invest, I would only be buying low numbered stuff.
I LOVE football and football cards! I stopped buying them as investments 5 years ago because of all of the injuries. It's just a sketchy investment. On the positive side, the market is not in as bad of shape as the overall hobby thinks it is. It's still steadily going up, just at a mild rate. 2020-21 was just a moment in time. This is all because we are in a recession still. No big deal. The hobby future is still bright. Have some fun with it!

My worst investment in 2023 was buying many Ja Morant Prizm rookies that I thought were for a cheap price, but looking back at them now, it’s not good. I player who I thought was gonna be good but never was is Jarrett Culver. I’m a massive TWolves fan and we drafted Cameron Johnson in the 2019 draft but traded him and Dario Saric on draft night to Phoenix for Jarrett Culver! Yikes! The worse part is that Minnesota was interested in Darius Garland but he got taken 1 pick earlier by Cleveland. Whenever someone mentions Jarrett Culver’s name, it makes me mad because of all the talent he had coming into the NBA, his game never translated well. Although I can’t be too mad where my TWolves are currently at now!
Devin Vassell… when the Spurs got the #1 pick, I started buying him up left and right hoping they’d start winning and the Wemby effect could rub off on him. Boy, was I wrong

I made the mistake of investing huge into wander franco. I was just returning to the hobby, and freshly introduced to all the UA-cam influencers. Everyone was hyping him. I bought a few autographs, and tons of product hoping to find them myself. I even bought into some high-dollar breaks, hoping to get lucky with things like high-end Panini products I had never heard of before. Lost my butt on this. They're probably won't be a lot of people admitting to losing money on him. A lot of hard lessons learned. I actually almost bought some of those Luka Prizm rookies. I never actually did. I'm still considering picking one up, as a long-term hold because I like the guy. Great content, it's great to see an influencer being transparent and honest.
My worst investment was hands down Zach Wilson lol I bought his flawless sapphire auto, purple pulsar contenders auto, playbook vault /10, contenders red zone etc I don’t think I’ve ever lost more money on anything lol
Lucky I don’t have these issues. I watch a lot of the so called influencers, but I never follow what they are buying. I just love to add cool cards to the PC. Collect the goats and you will be okay in the long run. Keep up the great content Jay.
Honestly when covid hit everyone was buying modern cards that was overpriced and overprinted. And all i did was buy vintage and im glad i made the right decision.. patience is key in this game along with many things in life.. but love your content and keep it up
Got burned with buying luka and zion silvers. Last year I took big losses on them and used the money to buy some parallels for them as I still believe in the players doing well in future. Hopefully the parallel/numbered cards rise in future.

The only names that I bought this year above $10 were lots of Ohtani, some Julio Rodriguez, a nice mix of Yoshida autos, a Rutschman Green Speckle PSA10, a cheap Kaprizov jersey patch, a Mauer auto and inexpensive jersey cards along with a nice Doyle Brunson mix of autos including one of his cowboy hats with some provinonce :)! ☆ Yes, buy what speaks to you and makes you happy!!

Back in the 80's I collected Cecil Fielder and Robin Ventura cards. Neither of them panned out like I had hoped, and I have a bunch of their cards. I have to admit that I did guess right on many other stars from that era though.
The only strategy that truly works is buying baseball in the winter and football in the spring. And even then you’re gonna get skunked from time to time.
I like this video. Maybe you can make one (maybe you have, but an updated one) of cards you've sold in the past, but are worth a ton more now if you've have kept them. I used to own many Luka Doncic rookie cards and sold many back then when his cards were cheap in his early rookie year, same with Patrick Mahomes rookie cards. I bought and sold during Mahomes first yr when he was injured (even had my hands on his NT RPA for a brief moment) when they weren't too expensive at the time compared to now. Sellers remorse cards, cards you wish you hadn't sold.
I have a similar story. I bought into the Mac Jones hype during his strong rookie season. Belichick, the supposed genius, had seemingly found his replacement for Tom Brady. I bought tons of his rookies at their absolute peak, thinking I had to get them before they went through the roof as New England built another dynasty. Well, that rookie season will go down as Mac Jones' best season. He will never repeat what he did and it looks like his time as the starter is coming to an end and he's destined to be a career backup/journeyman. I guess Belichick might not be as much of a genius as we assumed and maybe Brady had a little something to do with his massive success.
I have that Pele in purple /10 9.5 pop1 as well. It’s on card auto and all the stickers out currently are driving it down. If you want a premium auto of him out Topps is the grail.
the problem is people buying ridder and pickett to try and flip when they should have known they were trash qb's to begin with. the fomo def gets people burned ,but most should know that those guys aren't going to be anything more than a borderline career backup qb.
So a few months ago I bought into Brock Purdy. Spent $800 on a rookie auto bgs 9.5 /75. He then lost 3 games in a row and I got scared. Ended up thinking man I got to get out so I can re coup some money before it hits zero. Well I took a $200 loss. Sold the card now it’s up. So live and learn. Hard to just buy hold for a month then sell and try to make money. Kinda like playing the stock market but you’re hoping your guy you invest in doesn’t get injured. Brock is doing great and has a real great team behind him. Might even win a Super Bowl.
As a long time collector, I am a true Dirk Nowitzki fan. I bought a PSA 10 Dirk Rookie card for $500 during the peak. Fast forward post peak and the same PSA 10 card has sold for $75

I am not sure if this counts as a loss on a direct investment but basically in 2020 when product was still $20 a blaster and $40 a mega. I hit the motherload at a target with 2020 optic football (herbert, burrow, hurts, tua year). I normally NEVER resell sealed but because I was short on money paying for tuition I decided to sell the three blasters and three megas I bought. Someone bought em off me and than pulled a Justin Herbert Downtown Rookie which was going for a ridiculous amount at the time ($8k-$10k). Since that day I only rip what I get and have only pulled doodoo.
when i first go into the hobby in 2020 i bought 2 psa 9 prizm rookies of MPJ for $80 a piece ended up selling em for a loss 6 months later and their worth like $25 a piece now lmao
Worst Investment of 2023 was Swapping my /15 Tua RC Auto Flawless + $300 in cards for a /10 Embiid Gold RC Auto Embiid has stayed Flat but the Tua is way up
I definitely feel you on having missed out and not selling when a card is high. Happened to me with Jerome Ford this year. Something I’m trying to work on is selling high and later on buying a bargain bin card of the player to still have a card of them and recognize the profit they brought me
I'm the biggest holder of Jerome Ford in the world. I still have his cards. He's taking over for Chubb and he's a beast. Chubb might get cut do to huge contract yt next season. 13 mill I think ?
I went ALL IN on ONeil Cruz this year. I bought around 3-5 copies of all his main rookie cards and at least one of each of his higher end cards/RPAs/Autos. Now, I am a Pirates fan and have been since I was old enough to start following sports, so I guess I am keeping most of these cards for my PC, and he could STILL end up being a great player.... But all told, I spent thousands, and I am feeling it right now this time of year. Boy, would I love to have that extra cash right about now....
My worst investment was probably Mac Jones. I bought his cards heavy. I traded away a Trevor Lawrence autograph for a Mac Jones autograph. Now I regret it.
I bought a bunch of Wander Franco. I mostly do baseball and although his skills/play hasn't changed the whole off the field stuff has crashed his market.
U buy those cards for your collection only not to flip because the market is very high wait to it crashes to pick those up !! Never play along with the hipe !! That card will drop tp 30 !!
Moral of the story... BUY GOATS!!! ... if you buy these speculative players then sell them (unless you PC them) within a year of buying when they are hot.
worst investment as of late has to be josh allen for me. bought 3 contenders autos before the season, and prices are down quite a bit. probably down $750-$1,000 ea. from where i bought it.
Most of yall football card collectors putting too much everything just on QB's like their the whole hobby, their not, plenty other superstar players on the football field to collect besides QB's
I also bought into Deuce Vaughn heavy too. Still really like the kid. And I bought a bunch of Brock Purdy and got scared and sold it all when he was down earlier this year at half the value of now. Ouch!
I am so new to sports card "investing" I bought 3 boxes of Bowman Platinum @100 from Walmart....thinking they were Chrome! Man i cant give those things away! Being new is costly. $300 may not be much, but as far as my Hobby/investment it could have definitely went towards something better....fccckkkk
Older collector bought Jose Canseco rookie during the hay day of collecting! back then $210 was a lot of money for the card and today at best is now $10/15 raw! Gotta love 86 donruss!

It is very hard to make money in this hobby, let alone break even. I plan on cutting back big time in my participation in the SC hobby in the following years. Cards have been mostly a hole in my wallet with no real return on my efforts.

I don’t know my biggest L a couple come to mind. But I think about my most recent L, and that was going big on Jaren Hall when Kirk Cousins went down. He actually looked good when he got the Nod to start then got a concussion at the goal line which brought in Joshua Dobbs. And again something in me especially seeing these Donruss Rated rookies and optic previews coming out to pick him up because Dobbs threw 4 INTs last game. This is what happens when your football team isn’t doing well during the season (the Chargers) and the Kings lose the play-in game at home. You look for distractions lol great video man!
Sell the Stroud card now and make some of the money you lost back up. He could be trash next year and then your in the same boat with that card as the others.

I traded a Sauce card and 5 dollars for a Jordan Love Optic Pink PSA 9 thinking I could do a quick flip in beginning of season. I was wrong. The Jordan Love is now at the price I originally bought the Sauce at 🤪. Hoping they make the playoffs.

a good game for Kuminga is scoring 15pts but to be a superstar you gotta avg at least 25, most games he scores about 7pts, I don’t think Kuminga is him neither, unfortunately 😢

my advice... if your collecting, be patient! Your card will always be there and will most likely drop in price. The right time to buy is the hardest part even if may take a couple of years. And that's all part of collecting. Enjoy!

Buying hobby boxes of UD Series 1 in hopes of getting a Bedard SP. Spent about 300 CAD at the expo, pulled a Luke Hughes (worth about 80) and nothing else. Player wise, definitely Kenny Pickett, bought a bunch of his rookies and he is not panning out as I had hoped, investment wise, and as a Steelers fan.
Mojo, This is the year of the Back up QB. . I always buy back up QB. They might get a shot. When they do you can 10x your money. Jake Browning autos at start of football ball season was 5.00. burrow got hurt. I just sold his card for 150.00. 2017 Prizm silver auto is the card. Trevor Lawrence back up iam looking to make$$ too. A different way to make money on backup.
Thought a Cade, Evan Mobley dual jersey was the coolest thing when I was just getting back into the hobby. Failed to notice a little damage, overpaid and played myself haha ended up getting more of the dual jerseys at comps

One of my worst investments was a bunch of Sammy Davis rookie cards. Never heard of him? Nobody has, he was a cornerback on the chargers who was a bust. I way over paid for his cards, however they are for my pc because he is now the football coach at my school.
Bad investments don't have a lot cause I don't have a lot to spend. No real big losses this year. But I did receive my Dr.J redemption in the mail that I bought off of eBay. Well you know how that goes got a Cam Reddish auto as a replacement. Thanks a lot Panini. That will probably be the last redemption I ever buy. I looked forward to that card for over 2 years and got just crushed on the replacement.
Love the video, really makes me reflect on my past purchases . I generally buy into breaks and like to rip and i've spent countless of money on retail which i probably shouldnt have. But recently I bought a lebron james topps chalk toss for above price not knowing their was a chrome counterpart which is what i was doing my comps with..I Paid almost 70-80+ over. but still a nice bgs 9.5+ chalk toss cant be too mad.

I got burned on a break for $120,never do breaks again I learned to just go buy the cards I want instead of chasing them in blasters

Back in the 80's I collected Cecil Fielder and Robin Ventura cards. Neither of them panned out like I had hoped, and I have a bunch of their cards. I have to admit that I did guess right on many other stars from that era though.
Also careful which products you invest into. Im big on Anthony Richardson but no products that I would want to hold have came out yet

I bought a bunch of Cam Reddish a few years ago thinking he might be a good buy but that didn't work out.
But Luka is playing really well and those Prizm cards will be valuable in a few years especially if he wins a championship or MVP.

I like this video. Maybe you can make one (maybe you have, but an updated one) of cards you've sold in the past, but are worth a ton more now if you've have kept them. I used to own many Luka Doncic rookie cards and sold many back then when his cards were cheap in his early rookie year, same with Patrick Mahomes rookie cards. I bought and sold during Mahomes first yr when he was injured (even had my hands on his NT RPA for a brief moment) when they weren't too expensive at the time compared to now. Sellers remorse cards, cards you wish you hadn't sold.
I remember when the Mahomes NT RPA PSA 10’s were selling for like $4K. I wanted one but didn’t end up pulling the trigger lol.
I have a similar story. I bought into the Mac Jones hype during his strong rookie season. Belichick, the supposed genius, had seemingly found his replacement for Tom Brady. I bought tons of his rookies at their absolute peak, thinking I had to get them before they went through the roof as New England built another dynasty. Well, that rookie season will go down as Mac Jones' best season. He will never repeat what he did and it looks like his time as the starter is coming to an end and he's destined to be a career backup/journeyman. I guess Belichick might not be as much of a genius as we assumed and maybe Brady had a little something to do with his massive success.

I have that Pele in purple /10 9.5 pop1 as well. It’s on card auto and all the stickers out currently are driving it down. If you want a premium auto of him out Topps is the grail.
the problem is people buying ridder and pickett to try and flip when they should have known they were trash qb's to begin with. the fomo def gets people burned ,but most should know that those guys aren't going to be anything more than a borderline career backup qb.

So a few months ago I bought into Brock Purdy. Spent $800 on a rookie auto bgs 9.5 /75. He then lost 3 games in a row and I got scared. Ended up thinking man I got to get out so I can re coup some money before it hits zero. Well I took a $200 loss. Sold the card now it’s up. So live and learn. Hard to just buy hold for a month then sell and try to make money. Kinda like playing the stock market but you’re hoping your guy you invest in doesn’t get injured. Brock is doing great and has a real great team behind him. Might even win a Super Bowl.
As a long time collector, I am a true Dirk Nowitzki fan. I bought a PSA 10 Dirk Rookie card for $500 during the peak. Fast forward post peak and the same PSA 10 card has sold for $75

I am not sure if this counts as a loss on a direct investment but basically in 2020 when product was still $20 a blaster and $40 a mega. I hit the motherload at a target with 2020 optic football (herbert, burrow, hurts, tua year). I normally NEVER resell sealed but because I was short on money paying for tuition I decided to sell the three blasters and three megas I bought. Someone bought em off me and than pulled a Justin Herbert Downtown Rookie which was going for a ridiculous amount at the time ($8k-$10k). Since that day I only rip what I get and have only pulled doodoo.

Something I’m trying to work on is selling high and later on buying a bargain bin card of the player to still have a card of them and recognize the profit they brought me

I went ALL IN on ONeil Cruz this year. I bought around 3-5 copies of all his main rookie cards and at least one of each of his higher end cards/RPAs/Autos. Now, I am a Pirates fan and have been since I was old enough to start following sports, so I guess I am keeping most of these cards for my PC, and he could STILL end up being a great player.... But all told, I spent thousands, and I am feeling it right now this time of year. Boy, would I love to have that extra cash right about now....
My worst investment was probably Mac Jones. I bought his cards heavy. I traded away a Trevor Lawrence autograph for a Mac Jones autograph. Now I regret it.

It is very hard to make money in this hobby, let alone break even. I plan on cutting back big time in my participation in the SC hobby in the following years. Cards have been mostly a hole in my wallet with no real return on my efforts.

I don’t know my biggest L a couple come to mind. But I think about my most recent L, and that was going big on Jaren Hall when Kirk Cousins went down. He actually looked good when he got the Nod to start then got a concussion at the goal line which brought in Joshua Dobbs. And again something in me especially seeing these Donruss Rated rookies and optic previews coming out to pick him up because Dobbs threw 4 INTs last game. This is what happens when your football team isn’t doing well during the season (the Chargers) and the Kings lose the play-in game at home. You look for distractions lol great video man!
Sell the Stroud card now and make some of the money you lost back up. He could be trash next year and then your in the same boat with that card as the others.

my advice... if your collecting, be patient! Your card will always be there and will most likely drop in price. The right time to buy is the hardest part even if may take a couple of years. And that's all part of collecting. Enjoy!

Yes, heart breaking, but great cards. All the way on the other side of the world, buying plenty of cards , postage killer and dollar shit. But love the fine. Sometimes postage can be more than card. Always not knowing to sell now or just hold on.

Buying hobby boxes of UD Series 1 in hopes of getting a Bedard SP. Spent about 300 CAD at the expo, pulled a Luke Hughes (worth about 80) and nothing else. Player wise, definitely Kenny Pickett, bought a bunch of his rookies and he is not panning out as I had hoped, investment wise, and as a Steelers fan.

Jake Browning autos at start of football ball season was 5.00. burrow got hurt. I just sold his card for 150.00. 2017 Prizm silver auto is the card. Trevor Lawrence back up iam looking to make$$ too. A different way to make money on backup.

One of my worst investments was a bunch of Sammy Davis rookie cards. Never heard of him? Nobody has, he was a cornerback on the chargers who was a bust. I way over paid for his cards, however they are for my pc because he is now the football coach at my school.

Bad investments don't have a lot cause I don't have a lot to spend. No real big losses this year. But I did receive my Dr.J redemption in the mail that I bought off of eBay. Well you know how that goes got a Cam Reddish auto as a replacement. Thanks a lot Panini. That will probably be the last redemption I ever buy. I looked forward to that card for over 2 years and got just crushed on the replacement.

But recently I bought a lebron james topps chalk toss for above price not knowing their was a chrome counterpart which is what i was doing my comps with..I Paid almost 70-80+ over. but still a nice bgs 9.5+ chalk toss cant be too mad.
