Love your channel. You have given me so many ideas!!! But my concern is what emulator are you running to use the light gun and the trackball? Did you get them working with lr-fbalpha? or are you using mame4all (advmame etc)?
Steve Tarantola For my trackball games I mostly use mame 2003 and for the light gun games I use mame advance. I couldn't get mame 2003 to recognize the light gun. They both work well though, I just wanted to use mame 2003 because I already had the roms for it.
Got it working on my Pi thanks to you boss. Having a hell of a time trying to figure out how to add Bezels in Advame 1.4 though. Nothing works no matter what I try adjusting in the .rc file or directory I try dropping the bezel files into retropie. Running Hursty's Bezel script so not sure if that has something to do with it. Tried .art files too zipped and unzipped. Doesn't look like Advame supports shaders either which wish it could so can convert to CRT shader
Your gun and cursor are so smooth and fit your screen perfectly. My gun and my cursor no matter how I try to adjust them in the analogue controls I can’t get it to be perfect on my screen it sometimes doesn’t go all the way to the right or all the way down is there a way to calibrate the gun?

Thank you, I don't know about 3.9 never heard of it. I've only done it with 1.4 I'll assume it'll work with 3 since the and 1.4 use the same rom version. I don't know what rom version 3.9 use keep in mind you'll need the .zip and .chd files for area51 to run
Epic, thanks for getting back to me that saves a lot of trouble not having to get it to the Pi. I have a 2 player tabletop mame board and I'm looking to get 2 of the aim trak guns with the recoil, however the unit only has a 5v 2.5 amp power adapter on board to power the Pi and all the led buttons e.t.c. Anyway could you recommend a way to get both AimTrak Guns to get their power from the unit as opposed to going to external power sources?
ZombieNationLTD the guns themselves use 24 to 36v, and the ir bar for the guns use 5v. The ir bar does not use much amp and can probably share with another 5v device. You can also just use one power supply for both guns, which is how I have my two guns connected. I use a 36v 3amp power supply for mine and have both guns connected to the one power adapter. I would not recommend sharing the power for your raspberry pi with anything else, unless it's through the usb ports.
I was thinking the same. But I don't found such options and menu in recalbox. Maybe there is more work to do in config files directly. If you have time to give it a try with your experience, that would be great.
Purchased a brand new light gun, I followed install instructions for "Gunconf" but when I run the configuration it shows my gun is detected but when I press trigger to start calibration it says "Gun Detected. Loading Configuration..." then nothing happens. I press quit and get this error. Don't know what it means or what to do.
Evo RetroGame I have now tried it on 4.1 but I'm assuming it'll work too. I didn't even think about the calibration. That part is easy though, while in a game that you can see the cross air on the screen, hold the trigger down for more than 5 seconds (default), the cross air will start to move on is own, release the trigger, the cross air will stop, aim at it and press the trigger. It'll auto move to two more locations, shoot those too. Gun will now start working normal again.
joe husosky You'll need the software for the gun, go to www.ultimarc.com/aimtrak.html the download link is at the end of that page. If you had your gun for awhile it might ask you to update the firmware of the gun before you could make changes with the application. It's kinda straightforward to use the application though. You'll see a slider that you could drag to make the change, click apply to save the changes.
unfortunately this is just a bodge to get the lightgun to act as a mouse device which it is not, it juat means you can move the cursor on screen by moving the gun across the screen. When a lightgun has a proper set up you can move the gun off screen and point straight back to a specific spot on screen and the cursor will go there. this method works but is very Woolley at best.
A7mag3ddon correct, the experience is also different for different games. It's been working "good enough" that I enjoy most of the light gun games. If I was to play without having a gun cross air displayed on screen then the game would be very close to unplayable.

I was not able to get it working on console emulators. Retropie and retroarch have been getting plenty of updates since this video so they could he supported now but I'm not aware. I do know that duck hunt for arcade works perfect, you'd have to test rest.
No matter what settings I use, my cursor goes to the far sides of the screen when moving in a direction in Advmame 1.4. The cursor moves appropriately in the aimtrack config app.
Joseph Holliday make sure you set your default seconds for entering calibration mode to a higher value, maybe about 15 to 30 seconds. If that's not your issue, make sure you calibrate the gun on the same screen you'll be playing on with the sensor mounted on the correct orientation and in the location it'll be during game play.
Thanks. I finally got it sort of working, but have lots of issues. The cursor is following the gun now, but no matter how much I calibrate it, it moves further than I aim. The more I aim to the left, the further left of where I'm aiming it goes, and vice versa. Also, sometimes when I calibrate it I'm able to do the top left and right points, but then the cursor just disappears. I try hitting the spot at the bottom of the screen where I think it should be, but no avail. I end up having to reboot the Pi to get it back.
Joseph Holliday so you're using the pi to calibrate it? Are you calibrate it in a desktop environment or through an emulator in RetroPie? I used the desktop to calibrate mine. You'll also have to adjust some games individually
eldon226 I have a custom aimtrak app that I can calibrate it in, but sometimes certain games load in a different resolution to maintain aspect ratio and it seems to throw calibration off, so I tried calibrating while in game.

Broadwater Studios Ltd I never found any that only had light gun games, had to get the entire package then go through and select what I wanted. I'm not sure where exactly you'd find it, I just remember having to get the entire rom set just to get the few roms I wanted.
XGamer [CRO] well in Ali express they have similar 2-player ones for 400$ . I understand this one is higher quality, so depending on the custom parts I would say 500-800$. If he sells this one I can even discuss it but privately
Hi. Would you mind sharing what encoder you use? iPac, Xin-mo etc? Have you used all the USB ports on the Pi? USB's 1x Gun, 1x Sensor, 1x Trackball, 1x Encoder? Is that correct?
Dwayne Hurst I am using all 4 usb ports. I used two zero delay usb encoders (DragonRise), I have player one and two in the first two ports, the port on the back of the cabinet is connected to port 3 (light gun), and port 4 is the trackball. The ir bar is being powered but it's own 5v power adapter.

Dwayne Hurst I have not tried it for anything other than arcade games. I doubt it'll work with anything else though. Time crisis for arcade is too slow to be playable on the raspberry pi 3 but point blank for arcade does work.
You may need to make sure your gun is updated with the latest firmware, also check that the gun is selected for use as a mouse instead of game controller, lastly check to make sure your ir sensor bar is working, you can do that's by looking at it it through your phone camera, you should see the LEDs on the sensor bar through the dark filter.
@@eldon226 thanks for answer. I installed calib tool on a windows laptop and succed in calibrate it. It work like a charm on windows... It works also good on pixel desktop on my pi but still not okay in advmame. I had strange character when I move. A succession of [[-A [[^F .....instead of having a sort of coordinate like you. My firmware version is 9.20 do you think it is okay ? The only thing I don't try is to update it. Thanks a lot for your help again
@@clementpruneaux1756 did you make sure it's set to emulate a mouse and not joystick? Your firmware should be good but I'm not 100 percent sure because mine is on 9.19. Don't know what changes that made in yours which toy said is 9.20. i got pretty fast stuck as i tried to get this working. i am missing the advmame 1.4 and only have a advmame in the opt list. i tried the advmame but it failed to run with the "No video modes available for the current game."
I need help. I have this same trackball on my PI 3, using the latest of retropie as well. I know my trackball works because when I hook it to a computer the trackball works. But it does not work when I connect it to my PI 3. I am connecting my Ultimarc U-Trak ball to the PI 3 via the USB. Am I missing a driver or do I have to use a I-Pac? How do you have yours connected to your PI 3?
Oscar Arredondo I have mine connected with usb. Keep in mind that the trackball will only work with games that support it and emulators that support it. I think it'll be easier for you to use mame 2003 for your emulator. Apart from that you can check your trackball on the pi by loading a desktop OS like PIXEL. That'll be plug and play also, if your trackball works using that then it should work with RetroPie too.
KOT Production This method will not work for any other emulator. I've never seen nor heard of anyone being able to use light guns on psx or dreamcast emulators on the raspberry pi. Maybe that feature will be added in a future update.
KOT Production I have never used a wiimote with it, just ps3 controllers. Just need to pair it with the raspberry pi and configure the buttons just like any other controller.

Will this work with the wii remote.. ? I have the dolphin bar and it reads on my pie some buttons of the wii but not all and when using the track like a mouse it doesn’t see it at all.. I thought my bar was broken but I tried it on another pc and it saw it exactly as a mouse.. I don’t want to mess with files or scripts bcuz I know the pie can get messed up..
How did you split your power source to run both guns, and are you still getting 2amps to each gun when 2 people are using them or is there a noticeable draw?

I haven't notice any difference in performance when I play one player or two players. dude I also have a question. why is it for example terminator 2 works on mame2010, but when I try and load using advmame1.4 it doesnt work?(black screen). Im pretty sure I can only use the guns with 1.4 but the emulator wont boot games that mame2010 does. does anyone know?

buffalo716 no, I have not updated it and don't plan to because everything is working exactly like I want and I'm aware that updating it could potentially cause issues. Something I always recommend is creating a backup of your image before updating too, if you did that then just go back to the old version.
Yeah man my Aimtrak at the advm page doesn't register any movement. Buttons all work but the movement only shows up as D^ D^ D^ over and over. I've rerun this tutorial 3 x and nothing helps.
Keggar13 S try updating your firmware and make sure you have it set to be used as a mouse (not game pad). Apart from that I don't know what it could be.
eldon226 thanks for the reply, the firmware on pc said 9.19 which I believe is the most current. I'll double check it's not set as a gamepad. My only thought is I'm trying this on motion blue v6 and something may be interfering with it working properly. No idea.
I have raspberry pi 3 b+ with retropie and x-arcade dual controller. All running correctly with a lot of emulators. I have it connected to my LG TV 42''. Could i configure Aimtrak light gun to run it correctly like you? Is it ok for my TV?
Hello. I’m wondering if you can help. I recent purchased an arcade running RetroPie. The seller has ghosted on me an will not help me get the aimtrack light guns he sold me. Anyway, I found your video, went through the steps and I still cannot get the guns (crosshairs) to show. In addition to the steps I’m your video, I ensured via the Aimtrak software, to set the guns as mouse. And since I have two guns, I set each of them with a unique identifier. Its a 4 player cabinet. Under the cabinet I have a powered USB splitter plugged in the player 4 port with the two guns plugged into the splitter (along with the player 4 and a USB keyboard). The light-bar is on the top of my monitor (tv) plugged into the USB port on the back of the tv. The crosshairs do not show. When I go to any of the gun games, it just plays the opening sequence of the game - none of the buttons work (let alone the light guns). I have to do a hard reboot to get back to the main menu of the arcade. Sorry for the long note. The seller has really let me down with ‘tail light’ warranty/support. Thanking you in advance.
Do you know which emulator the gun games open with? Also you need to make sure the tv is constantly powering the ir bar, some tv only apply power to the usb ports when initially plugged then stop, and doesn't apply power again till that source is active on the tv. Try not to use usb splitters with the guns, plug them directly in the pi. Also, try to get only one gun to work, don't even plug the second gun in till you have the first one working. I had some issues when it was time for me to setup my second gun. It wasn't just plug n play.
eldon226 Hello. Thanks for getting back. They get open with 1.4. I think that’s what your asking. For the light bar, I need a powered USB for it? I tried plugging it into one, I can’t tell if it’s on or not. How do you tell? I did what the instructions say and looking at the light ‘using any digital or phone camera’. I don’t see anything when I do - I’m not sure what I’m supposed to see. Each gun game with a light, I don’t see anything with either. Regarding the splitter for the guns: are you saying I should unplug a player controller and plug the gun in that? Would this be something I’d have to do each time I want to use the gun? That’s doesnt seem right? I’d send you a pic of under the cabinet but I don’t know how to in the UA-cam comments section. Thanks again for your help.
@@LeonLipschitz you can also try mame2003, with a compatible rom. When you look at the ir bar with your camera you'll see the leds on in the ir bar. If you not seeing them on plug them somewhere else, they don't need data, just power, so you can even use a phone charger brick. You only need one ir bar, both guns will with with just one. You can use the usb splitter for the controllers, so plug the guns directly into the pi and plug the controllers in through the splitter. Remember to only focus on getting one to work, unplug the second one.
eldon226 Thanks. I’m definitely not seeing any leds on the light bar. Is it possible that both light bars from each gun aren’t working? That doesn’t seem likely to me. I’ve plug them via a phone brick, a powered USB hub... no luck. I think that’s the issue.

gareth castle You'll just have to test them and see which ones will work. If you go to the bottom of www.ultimarc.com/aimtrak.html you can download the setup guide which has a lot of games listed to make finding them a little quicker /easier. That's a lot of space you got there.

Second, i followed this step by step and cannot get my aimtrac gun to move around inthe Duck hunt game. it all works just like in your steps until i load the game, which it loads it just wont move. im running my retro pie on ubuntu/laptop. any info would be greatly appreciated
eldon226 I’m using everything you are, adv Mame 1.4. I have tried other games and same thing happens. The gun moves around like a regular mouse in my desktop but as soon as I load duck hunt it doesn’t move. I even configured it with the aimtrac software to make it a mouse
@@ryanworden7870 ok, I understand. Try mame2003. I've only tried this with the raspberry pi so I'm not too sure. If you have multiple mouse connected (like a touchpad) try disabling or disconnecting them.
D3AD SH0T try a different game, make sure too much stray light is not entering the front of the gun. Maybe sure everything is configured correctly. What emulator are you using?
if you dont see what happens when you go to 2:45 to 2;48 the scrolling mouse stuff what is the problem? how do i configure aim trac gun correctly so this occurs so can finish setting it up?
I don’t know if you missed anything, you can check your setup with a computer to make sure it’s working. Try different USB ports, make sure your ir bar is working too. Use a fresh copy of retropie, not one that’s been modified.
Short answer is yes, however, you'll need to be somewhat familiar with, setting up your games and configuring your controllers. Also, if you plan to use it similar to how I have it with the controllers, trackball, and guns you'll need to plug your devices in the corresponding usb ports that I have them plugged in for mine. The guns will need to be programmed similar to the settings in mine also. Aspect ratio would need to be adjusted depending on the monitor you'll be using. It'll overclock your pi too.
Nitin Sunak you'll need to create a regular folder in the same directory that has your area51 zip file (rom), name the folder area51 and place your chd file in it. I'm using advance mame to run it. I don't currently have my Bartop with my due to relocation, but the chd file will be a few hundred megabytes if I remember correctly. I got mine in a mame package awhile back, don't remember where exactly.
Hey guys, I did the same thing and still not working.. made a folder called area51 put the CHD in there and game itself is zipped.. its about 623kb and the CHD is 485MB.. still nothing.. any luck on your end? Driving me crazy! lol
Sagat V once I get my cabinet back I'll share the files I have with whoever is still haven't issues at that time. I'll also let you know exactly which emulator I'm using with it. I know it is advance mame but don't remember what version of advance mame.
I think to get light guns working is much easier now, pretty much plug n play. I haven’t messed with retropie in a long time, the last image I used was barebones retropie which included support for sinden light guns. I stopped using sinden and started using Gun4ir with the same retropie image and didn’t need to do anything just plug n play.
Hey, I can't seem to get my aimtrak working? I've followed everything you did (step by step) but it still won't work. The only thing that differed on ours is when you did the test and moved your gun and had that page full of texted for every time you moved the gun, I don't get that and I'm unsure why?
D3AD SH0T you're ps2 to usb adapter might be bad, that happens a lot, you get a new one, the y type, not the single plug type. You can also check to see if it works on your computer. If it's working on your computer then the adapter is fine.
D3AD SH0T so are you trying to setup two guns? Do you have a 3rd device like a trackball or another gun plugged in? If you do then then the 2nd cross hair might be assigned to that. There is two way I know how to work around that if it is your issue.
Ive done that and set it to device 1 and it still shows up like a keyboard? Is there anything eles i should be doing? My track trackball is still looking like your screen when i move it. I did notice that your screen saids Driver raw, mouses 1 mouse 0, axes 3 button 3. axe 0 [x] axe 1 [y] axe 2 [z] button 0 [left] button 1 [right] button 2 [middle] Mine saids Driver event, mouses 1.... Allison Daley I'm not sure what's going on with yours. I thought you had selected the gun to be a joystick instead of a mouse. Have you tried playing any game on mame advance worth it? Do NOT use mame 2003 because it won't work.
I was wondering if you could tell me how to remap the buttons for mame ? My son edited the buttons and now tab button will not bring up the input menu and the games are unplayable with the controls. Thanks

@@YouNgWunzz I never had that issue with mine, I shared how I did mine in the video. The only thing I can suggest is starting with a fresh install. Do not use anyone's image that's been modified.

I'm not sure if the options changed in the file manager since this video, but if you look at the bottom of your screen before pressing F4 make sure F4 is too select edit. If its not then press the F key that corresponds to the edit option. If you still can't get to editing that file then you can use the terminal to access it instead of the file manager.
i'm using version 4.5.2 the sensor picks up on gun all that works only thing i need to do is edit advmame 1.4 rc but i cant access edit with the f4 key
@@jamesg1160 when you are on the good area thanks to the file manager (like on the video where F4 did nothing for you). start typing on your keyboard : sudo nano advmame-1.4.rc . It should allow you to edit the file...
eldon226 I found out my keyboard mouse was stuffing it up so as soon I as unplugged it, it worked but worried about when I plug the track ball in it'll interfere. Also are you using a USB hub for all your controllers?
vernon job I am not using a hub, but that'll probably be easier for you. I changed my max usb current to 1, which allows more current draw from the raspberry pi usb ports and I have a custom switch that disconnect the trackball when I use the both guns simultaneously. That's how I'm about to have 5 usb devices on it without a hub.
eldon226 how did you do that switch if you don't mind me asking? The hub will be easier I think as 2 guns, 1 sensor, trackball, 2 USB encoders and 1 HDD 7 USB devices so will get a powered USB hub
Dyspare the buttons can work two different ways, if everything is working fine whenever your in a game but doesn't work while you're in the configuration menu for mame try the buttons while the gun is pointing at the ir sensor and also try it pointing away from the sensors.
It didnt actually work, I tried to play duck hunt, but the trigger doesnt fire. also tried operation wolf and the trigger doesnt shoot, but i can fire grenades using the left thumb

@@Huev0nz I believe the it’s still only through the indiegogo campaign. You can get it from people selling on sites like eBay but they’ll be way overpriced. I it works for psx on the pi4, but believe the other systems are supported or run well enough.
@@richardbaker112 I’m not sure if this work for that, I’m not familiar with it, only the Aimtrak light gun. I also gave up my Aimtrak for a sinden gun, the sinden is way better (my opinion). Aiming is easier and accurate, so accurate that I don’t need to use crosshairs while playing games. Distance and angle don’t matter much either with the sinden. If I should ever use ir technology in a lightgun again I’d go with a Gun4ir setup to get the same level of accuracy as the sinden.
Yes and yes, use the Y type ps2 to usb adapter though, I've tried multiple of the single type and had no success. The Y type had both the green and purple plug attached.
eldon226 hey so I followed the set up , up to where the codes are suppose to pop up so I know the trackball is being read. But nothing is showing , the ball is connected on the correct green mouse plug on the Ps2 connector on port 3 on the Pi. Any idea ?
Chris Allen I'm not sure, I'd have to try it one if these day. I am doubting it though, because it does not work with lr-mame 2003 either. My trackball however, works well with lr-mame2003 so I'd assume the trackball might work with lr-nestopia but not the gun.
so i tried a different image and have had some sucess but my question is when i was looking in the advance mame 1.4rc file i noticed p1 lightgun just as the mouse ones you show in your video should i take out the mouse ones and try it under lightgun instead?
CrazyNJmaN I haven't tried that, you can try if you'd like though. Let me know how it goes if you do. Glad you got it working now though. Make sure you calibrate the gun for a better experience. I recommend using pixel desktop instead of trying to calibrate in a game.

CrazyNJmaN what version of RetroPie are you using? Did yours pass the test to check if your gun was being recognized? What exactly happened? Are you using the correct rom version? Can you give more info?
im using 4.2.1 i changed the file as you said in the video when i go into retropie now on the bottom where it says ok exit help it moves back and forth between the 3 without me touching anything if i hold the trigger on the gun it stops moving

After that, the gun don't want to move correctly. So i think buttons 1,2,3 are for mouvement gun for my config. If i can use your gun config, it's will work directly. Thanks

Love your channel. You have given me so many ideas!!! But my concern is what emulator are you running to use the light gun and the trackball? Did you get them working with lr-fbalpha? or are you using mame4all (advmame etc)?
Steve Tarantola For my trackball games I mostly use mame 2003 and for the light gun games I use mame advance. I couldn't get mame 2003 to recognize the light gun. They both work well though, I just wanted to use mame 2003 because I already had the roms for it.

Got it working on my Pi thanks to you boss. Having a hell of a time trying to figure out how to add Bezels in Advame 1.4 though. Nothing works no matter what I try adjusting in the .rc file or directory I try dropping the bezel files into retropie. Running Hursty's Bezel script so not sure if that has something to do with it. Tried .art files too zipped and unzipped. Doesn't look like Advame supports shaders either which wish it could so can convert to CRT shader
Your gun and cursor are so smooth and fit your screen perfectly. My gun and my cursor no matter how I try to adjust them in the analogue controls I can’t get it to be perfect on my screen it sometimes doesn’t go all the way to the right or all the way down is there a way to calibrate the gun?

Thank you, I don't know about 3.9 never heard of it. I've only done it with 1.4 I'll assume it'll work with 3 since the and 1.4 use the same rom version. I don't know what rom version 3.9 use keep in mind you'll need the .zip and .chd files for area51 to run
Epic, thanks for getting back to me that saves a lot of trouble not having to get it to the Pi. I have a 2 player tabletop mame board and I'm looking to get 2 of the aim trak guns with the recoil, however the unit only has a 5v 2.5 amp power adapter on board to power the Pi and all the led buttons e.t.c. Anyway could you recommend a way to get both AimTrak Guns to get their power from the unit as opposed to going to external power sources?
ZombieNationLTD the guns themselves use 24 to 36v, and the ir bar for the guns use 5v. The ir bar does not use much amp and can probably share with another 5v device. You can also just use one power supply for both guns, which is how I have my two guns connected. I use a 36v 3amp power supply for mine and have both guns connected to the one power adapter. I would not recommend sharing the power for your raspberry pi with anything else, unless it's through the usb ports.

Purchased a brand new light gun, I followed install instructions for "Gunconf" but when I run the configuration it shows my gun is detected but when I press trigger to start calibration it says "Gun Detected. Loading Configuration..." then nothing happens. I press quit and get this error. Don't know what it means or what to do.

Evo RetroGame I have now tried it on 4.1 but I'm assuming it'll work too. I didn't even think about the calibration. That part is easy though, while in a game that you can see the cross air on the screen, hold the trigger down for more than 5 seconds (default), the cross air will start to move on is own, release the trigger, the cross air will stop, aim at it and press the trigger. It'll auto move to two more locations, shoot those too. Gun will now start working normal again.

joe husosky You'll need the software for the gun, go to www.ultimarc.com/aimtrak.html the download link is at the end of that page. If you had your gun for awhile it might ask you to update the firmware of the gun before you could make changes with the application. It's kinda straightforward to use the application though. You'll see a slider that you could drag to make the change, click apply to save the changes.

unfortunately this is just a bodge to get the lightgun to act as a mouse device which it is not, it juat means you can move the cursor on screen by moving the gun across the screen.
When a lightgun has a proper set up you can move the gun off screen and point straight back to a specific spot on screen and the cursor will go there. this method works but is very Woolley at best.
A7mag3ddon correct, the experience is also different for different games. It's been working "good enough" that I enjoy most of the light gun games. If I was to play without having a gun cross air displayed on screen then the game would be very close to unplayable.

I was not able to get it working on console emulators. Retropie and retroarch have been getting plenty of updates since this video so they could he supported now but I'm not aware. I do know that duck hunt for arcade works perfect, you'd have to test rest.

No matter what settings I use, my cursor goes to the far sides of the screen when moving in a direction in Advmame 1.4. The cursor moves appropriately in the aimtrack config app.
Joseph Holliday make sure you set your default seconds for entering calibration mode to a higher value, maybe about 15 to 30 seconds. If that's not your issue, make sure you calibrate the gun on the same screen you'll be playing on with the sensor mounted on the correct orientation and in the location it'll be during game play.
Thanks. I finally got it sort of working, but have lots of issues. The cursor is following the gun now, but no matter how much I calibrate it, it moves further than I aim. The more I aim to the left, the further left of where I'm aiming it goes, and vice versa. Also, sometimes when I calibrate it I'm able to do the top left and right points, but then the cursor just disappears. I try hitting the spot at the bottom of the screen where I think it should be, but no avail. I end up having to reboot the Pi to get it back.
Joseph Holliday so you're using the pi to calibrate it? Are you calibrate it in a desktop environment or through an emulator in RetroPie? I used the desktop to calibrate mine. You'll also have to adjust some games individually
eldon226 I have a custom aimtrak app that I can calibrate it in, but sometimes certain games load in a different resolution to maintain aspect ratio and it seems to throw calibration off, so I tried calibrating while in game.

Broadwater Studios Ltd I never found any that only had light gun games, had to get the entire package then go through and select what I wanted. I'm not sure where exactly you'd find it, I just remember having to get the entire rom set just to get the few roms I wanted.

Dwayne Hurst I am using all 4 usb ports. I used two zero delay usb encoders (DragonRise), I have player one and two in the first two ports, the port on the back of the cabinet is connected to port 3 (light gun), and port 4 is the trackball. The ir bar is being powered but it's own 5v power adapter.

Dwayne Hurst I have not tried it for anything other than arcade games. I doubt it'll work with anything else though. Time crisis for arcade is too slow to be playable on the raspberry pi 3 but point blank for arcade does work.

Hello and thanks for this tuto first ! Second, for you, what to do if after installing advmame1-4 we don't have same thing in /bin screen ?
You may need to make sure your gun is updated with the latest firmware, also check that the gun is selected for use as a mouse instead of game controller, lastly check to make sure your ir sensor bar is working, you can do that's by looking at it it through your phone camera, you should see the LEDs on the sensor bar through the dark filter.

It works also good on pixel desktop on my pi but still not okay in advmame. I had strange character when I move. A succession of [[-A [[^F .....instead of having a sort of coordinate like you. Were you able to make the edits in advance mame? That's the step after verifying that the gun is being see with coordinates changing as you aim in different places.

i got pretty fast stuck as i tried to get this working. i am missing the advmame 1.4 and only have a advmame in the opt list. i tried the advmame but it failed to run with the "No video modes available for the current game."
I need help. I have this same trackball on my PI 3, using the latest of retropie as well. I know my trackball works because when I hook it to a computer the trackball works. But it does not work when I connect it to my PI 3. I am connecting my Ultimarc U-Trak ball to the PI 3 via the USB. Am I missing a driver or do I have to use a I-Pac? How do you have yours connected to your PI 3?
Oscar Arredondo I have mine connected with usb. Keep in mind that the trackball will only work with games that support it and emulators that support it. I think it'll be easier for you to use mame 2003 for your emulator. Apart from that you can check your trackball on the pi by loading a desktop OS like PIXEL. That'll be plug and play also, if your trackball works using that then it should work with RetroPie too.

KOT Production This method will not work for any other emulator. I've never seen nor heard of anyone being able to use light guns on psx or dreamcast emulators on the raspberry pi. Maybe that feature will be added in a future update.

Will this work with the wii remote.. ? I have the dolphin bar and it reads on my pie some buttons of the wii but not all and when using the track like a mouse it doesn’t see it at all.. I thought my bar was broken but I tried it on another pc and it saw it exactly as a mouse.. I don’t want to mess with files or scripts bcuz I know the pie can get messed up..

dude I also have a question. why is it for example terminator 2 works on mame2010, but when I try and load using advmame1.4 it doesnt work?(black screen). Im pretty sure I can only use the guns with 1.4 but the emulator wont boot games that mame2010 does.

buffalo716 no, I have not updated it and don't plan to because everything is working exactly like I want and I'm aware that updating it could potentially cause issues. Something I always recommend is creating a backup of your image before updating too, if you did that then just go back to the old version.
When I run advm, the light guns aren't detected as a mouse? I already have a trackball connected on my cab. How do you fix this????

Yeah man my Aimtrak at the advm page doesn't register any movement. Buttons all work but the movement only shows up as D^ D^ D^ over and over. I've rerun this tutorial 3 x and nothing helps.
Keggar13 S try updating your firmware and make sure you have it set to be used as a mouse (not game pad). Apart from that I don't know what it could be.
eldon226 thanks for the reply, the firmware on pc said 9.19 which I believe is the most current. I'll double check it's not set as a gamepad. My only thought is I'm trying this on motion blue v6 and something may be interfering with it working properly. No idea.

Yes, it'll work just the same with your TV. The light gun has a dedicated ir sensor bar and does not connect to the tv.

Hello. I’m wondering if you can help. I recent purchased an arcade running RetroPie. The seller has ghosted on me an will not help me get the aimtrack light guns he sold me. Anyway, I found your video, went through the steps and I still cannot get the guns (crosshairs) to show. In addition to the steps I’m your video, I ensured via the Aimtrak software, to set the guns as mouse. And since I have two guns, I set each of them with a unique identifier. Its a 4 player cabinet. Under the cabinet I have a powered USB splitter plugged in the player 4 port with the two guns plugged into the splitter (along with the player 4 and a USB keyboard). The light-bar is on the top of my monitor (tv) plugged into the USB port on the back of the tv. The crosshairs do not show. When I go to any of the gun games, it just plays the opening sequence of the game - none of the buttons work (let alone the light guns). I have to do a hard reboot to get back to the main menu of the arcade. Sorry for the long note. The seller has really let me down with ‘tail light’ warranty/support. Thanking you in advance.
Do you know which emulator the gun games open with? Also you need to make sure the tv is constantly powering the ir bar, some tv only apply power to the usb ports when initially plugged then stop, and doesn't apply power again till that source is active on the tv. Try not to use usb splitters with the guns, plug them directly in the pi. Also, try to get only one gun to work, don't even plug the second gun in till you have the first one working. I had some issues when it was time for me to setup my second gun. It wasn't just plug n play.

Hello. Thanks for getting back. They get open with 1.4. I think that’s what your asking. For the light bar, I need a powered USB for it? I tried plugging it into one, I can’t tell if it’s on or not. How do you tell? I did what the instructions say and looking at the light ‘using any digital or phone camera’. I don’t see anything when I do - I’m not sure what I’m supposed to see. Each gun game with a light, I don’t see anything with either. Regarding the splitter for the guns: are you saying I should unplug a player controller and plug the gun in that? Would this be something I’d have to do each time I want to use the gun? That’s doesnt seem right? I’d send you a pic of under the cabinet but I don’t know how to in the UA-cam comments section. @@LeonLipschitz you can also try mame2003, with a compatible rom. When you look at the ir bar with your camera you'll see the leds on in the ir bar. If you not seeing them on plug them somewhere else, they don't need data, just power, so you can even use a phone charger brick. You only need one ir bar, both guns will with with just one. You can use the usb splitter for the controllers, so plug the guns directly into the pi and plug the controllers in through the splitter. Remember to only focus on getting one to work, unplug the second one.

Thanks. I’m definitely not seeing any leds on the light bar. Is it possible that both light bars from each gun aren’t working? That doesn’t seem likely to me. I’ve plug them via a phone brick, a powered USB hub... no luck. I think that’s the issue.

i have a 1tb hdd on my pi so loads of space still just had my gun delivered so trying to work out what games
gareth castle You'll just have to test them and see which ones will work. If you go to the bottom of www.ultimarc.com/aimtrak.html you can download the setup guide which has a lot of games listed to make finding them a little quicker /easier. That's a lot of space you got there.

Which emulator are you using? Have you tried it with any other light gun games?
eldon226 I’m using everything you are, adv Mame 1.4. I have tried other games and same thing happens. The gun moves around like a regular mouse in my desktop but as soon as I load duck hunt it doesn’t move. I even configured it with the aimtrac software to make it a mouse
@@ryanworden7870 ok, I understand. Try mame2003. I've only tried this with the raspberry pi so I'm not too sure. If you have multiple mouse connected (like a touchpad) try disabling or disconnecting them.

D3AD SH0T try a different game, make sure too much stray light is not entering the front of the gun. Maybe sure everything is configured correctly. What emulator are you using?
if you dont see what happens when you go to 2:45 to 2;48 the scrolling mouse stuff what is the problem? how do i configure aim trac gun correctly so this occurs so can finish setting it up?
Use the software tool to update the gun firmware, also make sure the gun is set to be used as a mouse, not a game controller.

I don’t know if you missed anything, you can check your setup with a computer to make sure it’s working. Try different USB ports, make sure your ir bar is working too. Use a fresh copy of retropie, not one that’s been modified.

Short answer is yes, however, you'll need to be somewhat familiar with, setting up your games and configuring your controllers. Also, if you plan to use it similar to how I have it with the controllers, trackball, and guns you'll need to plug your devices in the corresponding usb ports that I have them plugged in for mine. The guns will need to be programmed similar to the settings in mine also. Aspect ratio would need to be adjusted depending on the monitor you'll be using. It'll overclock your pi too.

I don't think so, maybe with newer versions of the emulator it's possible. I can only enable or disable it.

Nitin Sunak you'll need to create a regular folder in the same directory that has your area51 zip file (rom), name the folder area51 and place your chd file in it. I'm using advance mame to run it. I don't currently have my Bartop with my due to relocation, but the chd file will be a few hundred megabytes if I remember correctly. I got mine in a mame package awhile back, don't remember where exactly.
Hey guys, I did the same thing and still not working.. made a folder called area51 put the CHD in there and game itself is zipped.. its about 623kb and the CHD is 485MB.. still nothing.. any luck on your end? Driving me crazy! lol

I think to get light guns working is much easier now, pretty much plug n play. I haven’t messed with retropie in a long time, the last image I used was barebones retropie which included support for sinden light guns. I stopped using sinden and started using Gun4ir with the same retropie image and didn’t need to do anything just plug n play.

The only thing that differed on ours is when you did the test and moved your gun and had that page full of texted for every time you moved the gun, I don't get that and I'm unsure why?
D3AD SH0T you're ps2 to usb adapter might be bad, that happens a lot, you get a new one, the y type, not the single plug type. You can also check to see if it works on your computer. If it's working on your computer then the adapter is fine.

D3AD SH0T so are you trying to setup two guns? Do you have a 3rd device like a trackball or another gun plugged in? If you do then then the 2nd cross hair might be assigned to that. There is two way I know how to work around that if it is your issue.

Allison Daley use the app for the gun to switch from joystick to mouse. Your can download it from ultimarc website.
Ive done that and set it to device 1 and it still shows up like a keyboard? Is there anything eles i should be doing? My track trackball is still looking like your screen when i move it. Allison Daley I'm not sure what's going on with yours. I thought you had selected the gun to be a joystick instead of a mouse. Have you tried playing any game on mame advance worth it? Do NOT use mame 2003 because it won't work.
I was wondering if you could tell me how to remap the buttons for mame ? My son edited the buttons and now tab button will not bring up the input menu and the games are unplayable with the controls. Thanks

Sweeptheleg1969 I have never personally test a spinner but it's also essentially a mouse, so it should work just the same.

@@YouNgWunzz I never had that issue with mine, I shared how I did mine in the video. The only thing I can suggest is starting with a fresh install. Do not use anyone's image that's been modified.

i followed everything up to part where i need to highlight advmame 1.4 rc & press f4 but nothing happens really need your help bro
I'm not sure if the options changed in the file manager since this video, but if you look at the bottom of your screen before pressing F4 make sure F4 is too select edit. If its not then press the F key that corresponds to the edit option. If you still can't get to editing that file then you can use the terminal to access it instead of the file manager.

@@jamesg1160 when you are on the good area thanks to the file manager (like on the video where F4 did nothing for you). start typing on your keyboard : sudo nano advmame-1.4.rc . It should allow you to edit the file...
Followed this exactly but when go into advm it's doesn't show up as a mouse when I move it around
vernon job use the config software for the gun to make sure mouse is selected and not gamepad. You can also check it make sure it works on a computer.

eldon226 I found out my keyboard mouse was stuffing it up so as soon I as unplugged it, it worked but worried about when I plug the track ball in it'll interfere. Also are you using a USB hub for all your controllers?
vernon job I am not using a hub, but that'll probably be easier for you. I changed my max usb current to 1, which allows more current draw from the raspberry pi usb ports and I have a custom switch that disconnect the trackball when I use the both guns simultaneously. That's how I'm about to have 5 usb devices on it without a hub.
eldon226 how did you do that switch if you don't mind me asking? The hub will be easier I think as 2 guns, 1 sensor, trackball, 2 USB encoders and 1 HDD 7 USB devices so will get a powered USB hub

Dyspare the buttons can work two different ways, if everything is working fine whenever your in a game but doesn't work while you're in the configuration menu for mame try the buttons while the gun is pointing at the ir sensor and also try it pointing away from the sensors.

It didnt actually work, I tried to play duck hunt, but the trigger doesnt fire. also tried operation wolf and the trigger doesnt shoot, but i can fire grenades using the left thumb
Dyspare that sounds like you really just need to configure the gun in mame. If you just try to do it using RetroPie main menu it will not work.

I did not try to use Aimtrak with the pi4, I’ve only used it with the pi3. For my pi4 i use sinden lightgun.

@@Huev0nz I believe the it’s still only through the indiegogo campaign. You can get it from people selling on sites like eBay but they’ll be way overpriced. I it works for psx on the pi4, but believe the other systems are supported or run well enough.

No, the sinden light gun setup is complete different, this will not work.

@@richardbaker112 I’m not sure if this work for that, I’m not familiar with it, only the Aimtrak light gun. I also gave up my Aimtrak for a sinden gun, the sinden is way better (my opinion). Aiming is easier and accurate, so accurate that I don’t need to use crosshairs while playing games. Distance and angle don’t matter much either with the sinden. If I should ever use ir technology in a lightgun again I’d go with a Gun4ir setup to get the same level of accuracy as the sinden.
I'll give it a shot with the namco.

Yes and yes, use the Y type ps2 to usb adapter though, I've tried multiple of the single type and had no success. The Y type had both the green and purple plug attached.

eldon226 hey so I followed the set up , up to where the codes are suppose to pop up so I know the trackball is being read. But nothing is showing , the ball is connected on the correct green mouse plug on the Ps2 connector on port 3 on the Pi. Any idea ?
@@Realest you may have a bad ps2 to usb adapter, try plugging it to a computer (not to the pi) and check if it works.

Chris Allen I'm not sure, I'd have to try it one if these day. I am doubting it though, because it does not work with lr-mame 2003 either. My trackball however, works well with lr-mame2003 so I'd assume the trackball might work with lr-nestopia but not the gun.

so i tried a different image and have had some sucess but my question is when i was looking in the advance mame 1.4rc file i noticed p1 lightgun just as the mouse ones you show in your video should i take out the mouse ones and try it under lightgun instead?
CrazyNJmaN I haven't tried that, you can try if you'd like though. Let me know how it goes if you do. Glad you got it working now though. Make sure you calibrate the gun for a better experience. I recommend using pixel desktop instead of trying to calibrate in a game.

happy tulips yes, that is the same light gun I have. The recoil is the kick (feedback) you get from the gun while shooting.

CrazyNJmaN what version of RetroPie are you using? Did yours pass the test to check if your gun was being recognized? What exactly happened? Are you using the correct rom version? Can you give more info?
im using 4.2.1 i changed the file as you said in the video when i go into retropie now on the bottom where it says ok exit help it moves back and forth between the 3 without me touching anything if i hold the trigger on the gun it stops moving

I tried to change into game menu, button 1:trigger, button 2: left red button on aimtrak, button 3: right red button on aimtrak. After that, the gun don't want to move correctly. So i think buttons 1,2,3 are for mouvement gun for my config.
