This is one of the best bands Phil Lesh has ever assembled, but James Casey's contributions are on another level here. The vocals on Eyes Of The World. The seamless soprano sax interplay with the rest of the band. This is exceptional. Rest in peace, James Casey.
This was one of the best Phil & Friends shows I've seen. I feel like I've seen a lot, over a long period time, with many different musicians. This line up rules! I love having all 3 horn players but this was choice with Katie on the Violin. Dark Star> Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds> China Cat> Dark Star> Terrapin Station (refrain only) to close this set was... Transcendental!
Also, I think the Terrapin refrain was a nod to the 3/18/77 GD show, being the only complete version of the Terrapin Suite ever played by the Grateful Dead.
The lineup is epic, and the absolute joyful expression by each individual is just a once in a lifetime event when realized on a single stage, in a single show.
I was born in ‘68 and saw a few shows with my brother in the Bay Area in the late 80’s. I wasn’t “on the bus” then but eventually, I got it. I always associate Eyes of the World with the early 70’s jazzy pop/rock that I kept hearing and committed to memory as a young boy.
Ok I play bass phil I can't say though like a I went to so many grateful dead shows and phil and friends shows this is so good the grateful dead is my first band always but mmw john s band was my second my grandmother made sure I played jazz
Phil and Molo sound freaking amazing together, us usual. I can feel warm ocean breezes blowing in their melodies. James Casey giving this vocal the talent it deserves. Rest of the band ain't half bad, either!
Sorry, forgot to ask: What is going on in the last 5 minute of The Eleven there? They seem to be toying around the edges of Death Don't Have No Mercy, and I thought I detected one or two other very briefer nods. Any help? Thanks!
Lucky I picked this one out of the current Capitol run to go see! I agree that this lineup is superb with a different dimension added by Katy Jacoby. I like the way they play the songs straight with plenty of solos -- though James Casey picked up his horn twice before he got to use it! -- but I especially like how Phil will arrange a few little tweaks to a melody sometimes; it shows how versatile the songs themselves can be. I am sad to have to report that the guy next to me in the bathroom after the show gave it a vocal 4 out of 10, saying basically that there were too many jams and they should have left the girl singers (plural) backstage. Not sure what his set of expectations is like, but I'm glad I don't share them. This particular pair of second set openers was killer (or should I say "fire" like the kid do) for me. Anytime I get "The Eleven" I am happy, but the entire second set, plus the versions of Peggy-O and They Love Each Other in the first set were top notch. Hard to ask for more than what they delivered. Just saw the ad for The Great South Bay Festival out on LI this summer. No tix yet, but I will be looking forward to that, even if it's different personnel.
Thanks for the free stream. Who's Phil Lesh? Is he the one they never show? Such a good jam, I just wish they would show the guy for whom the band is named even half as much as everyone else. This is not to say I am not grateful for the free stream, thanks again.
It’s so wonderful thing that Phil Lesh is continuing to reach new folks all the time at age 83. For you neophytes. He is a classically trained musician originally in trumpet who took up bass at the request of Jerry Garcia in the mid sixties Almost 60 years later the rest is history and Phil is able to lead musicians young and old-Rock, Jazz, Folk, Country to play amazingly fresh versions of these songs. To learn. Orr about Phil read his biography “Searching for the Sound”
Hi Ocean- your post warned my❤. You have entered the Philzone- a very deep and complicated rabbit-hole. Start here and follow to the roots of modern music- Phil is one of the best tour guides😷
That's a great question i've never considered. If you know Phil then you know him. If not, then it may not seem like the bass player is who leads the band.
Katie Jacoby is amazing. She's married to JRAD guitarist Scott Metzger and has toured with the Who (if you can still call them that) for the last several years.
@@donaldgehre5964 JRAD is short for Joe Russo's Almost Dead. Russo was the drummer in Further with Bob and Phil. Then he started JRAD as a one off project that has been so successful, they've been doing it ever since. They are worth checking out. They are all great musicians with jazz chops and they bring their own spin to playing improv Grateful Dead music. They are fairly high energy, kind of a cross between Phish and the Dead. Check them out on UA-cam.
RIP James! Your spirit soars in the infinite energetic vibrations of love, sound & color. Thank you for your time here - NFA
RIP James. We all love you so much

Well said. Had to come back and listen to this today after hearing the awful news.
RIP James. Your voice and sax will always be in my memory.
Rest in Peace James. What a talented musician
James rocks this song! He has an amazing voice and so much talent ❤️
Completely agree! He was made to sing Eyes.
So sad to hear that he passed away at such a young age. Rest easy James!
James sounds fantastic!
Eyes of the world has alway been a top favorite, it just got even better, fantastic
The Eleven with Jacoby violin is just crazy. Medeski on Keys always good
Everyone's talking about James Casey but in my mind she's the breakout star here
Medeski has been blowing my mind for more than couple decades. Incredibly talented.
the segue into the eleven was smooth
Very nice
One of the best Phil shows I’ve ever seen.
A real Masterpiece!
Phil and friends has always been top notch. Grateful to have been there.
Thanks Phil, needed to hear the theme song !

A 6-string violin? Where have I been??? But, damn ... awesome! Love it!
and fretted!
@@jamestonguet1737 I didn't even notice that! hell, I could probably play one of those. I mean, except for the bowing part. Nobody wants to hear that!
It looks like a longer scale length maybe its a viola.
bout cracking perfect.
Katie Jacoby, wonderful musician and a sight to behold. Medeski on keys also fantastic.
Happy birthday Phil lesh
Oh shit... and The 11? Fantastic!
Johana has. You rock
I'm in all the way.

Far exceeds my expectations. Fucking Unbelievable.🙏👍👍🙃✨️💕
Are you kidding me? I'll see Phil anytime. I've given up on Dead & Slow.
…apparently you’ve missed quite a bit?

On and off. The Q was cool but not much recently.

Molo played with the Quintet and all their glorious technical capabilities, but it seems he still needs to count time out loud for the Eleven!

Phil is playing bass. He was a founding member of the Grateful Dead.
Today Phil basically finds and provides a platform for some of the best veterans and new talent out there.
