Always impressed with the historical context shared at the outset to set the table. This really sets your channel apart. No one else is educating on this level and with the style discussion and thoughtful editing to boot, Urban Gentry owns this space. Big thumbs up!
I’ve been watching this channel for 8 years or something crazy like that. And I still watch every single video. Tristano is the only watch UA-camr that I actually believe loves watches and isn’t in it for the algorithm. Respect
🙌🙌🙌🙌 No words, just thanks. You made me proudly happy. I am honored. I have already said too many word! 😅😅 Have a great week Joe, you are awesome. Best regards, TGV
Love the Purple Rain shirt TGV! I also really, really love the idea of heritage brands teaming up with microbrands. Hoping we see more old brands that might have lost their way over the years team up with microbrands in the future.
Having done most of my career in aerospace I have been drawn to the Bréguet type XX as my grail. I’m not there yet, and this Hemel certainly complicates matters. On the 3-minute dividers on the sub dial in big eye chronos, I have heard 2 credible reasons: 1) easier to read than subs of 5 (either on, after or before the marking) 2) fits with timing things for 6 minutes to calculate hourly rates (like a slow burn tachymètre) I love the Channel TGV, I started following years ago and really bonded with your appreciation of history, design language and technicality of the moment. Edit: spelling
I've always admired your work TGV, but this is another level well done on a polished delivery and a fantastic review, also thank you for bringing this collaboration to light.
Your intro's are always pure class but this one had so much going on that it was totally captivating. Probably need to watch it several times to bask in the nostalgia of 1950s & 1960s flight. Tye 20's are great. I actually have a Hemel Airfoil. It's not a Type 20 as such but definitely military aviation inspired (it has a Broad Arrow). I would love to see a Type 20 with a date at 6 - the symmetry would be perfection! Superb video as always.
TGV, your videos are like a calming cup of camomile tea. I can get to work full of stress and anxiety, but I put this on in the background and watch it as I work and I can literally feel my body temperature regulating from the smoothness of the transitions of shots and that anxious part of my brain gets occupied by keeping up with the history lessons you tell. I’d recommend these videos to anyone with severe adult ADHD like myself, whether they’re into watches or not.
🙌🙌🙌🙌 I read this comment out loud to my wife. This moved us both to hear we could help, especially in this world that can seem crazy at times. Thank you for sharing that, we deeply appreciate that. Onwards and upwards my friend! Best regards, TGV
I love the content of your reviews of these interesting watches and the history behind them. However, the introduction you create for the videos are an entertainment in their own right.
I was only looking at these watches, Mathey Tissot Hamel automatic watches not knowing that they were not Tissot I was looking on Amazon and found that they were more expensive on Amazon then the rest of the net here in the UK. love your videos thank you
Another great review. You feature some excellent and what would be otherwise unknown (even to a collector) watches on here and it is always a pleasure learning about the history of these timepieces.
Such a great video, with absolute clarity and honesty, as ever. Especially, your assessment of Mathey-Tissot as a modern brand. This particular watch is saved by the reputation of Hemel. There are issues, all of which you identified but the cost cannot be ignored and, in particular, the value proposition it offers.
Always, always enjoy and am impressed by your work, you are a big part of what started my passion for this hobby. Just this year I have become a full-time stay home dad and my mid-day coffee goes down a treat with the urban gentry on my home tv in my comfy chair, a real novelty I'm greatly enjoying.
Il tuo canale TGV è stato il primo che ho seguito parecchi anni fà, penso che gli iscritti ai tempi erano meno di 50k, la tua qualità video, le musiche, le riprese sono sempre migliorate! I tuoi richiami storici ormai li copiano tutti! Sei il numero 1!!! L'orologio è bellissimo e richiama i type20 in pieno! Un abbraccio dall'italia!!! Ti ho scritto il commento in italiano invece che in inglese per farti fare pratica!!! 😁
I love the type 20 and even own a vintage Airain type 21. Part of the soul of these pieces is the flyback movement. For me, that character gets lost in many reissues that don’t offer this feature. Admittedly, it’s more expensive, but it’s the one thing that elevates one reissue over another. Too bad this variant didn’t go the flyback route seen in the reissued Airain type 20’s and Hanhart 417 ES’s. In every other way, this MT by Hemel absolutely nails it.
Funky! Wild that the 30 min subdial has 5 big hashmarks (so 6 mins each) with the smaller marks being 2 mins. The vintage ones shown also seem to mark-out 3, 6, and 9 mins with long lines in the subdial. Wasn't there something about 3min phone calls back in the day? Oddly the quartz has 6 big marks, so a more standard 5 mins each. Last thing -- wearing my Dan Henry 1945 today; the Hemel is way more legible, but I like my 12 clicks on the bezel! Great show, TGV. 👍
Another fantastic video. Sad to see what happened to Mathey-Tissot. They used to be a very well respected Swiss brand. Maybe the collaboration with Hemel with give them some exposure.
10:58 I think you mean groups of 6 minutes. Each small tick mark at 2 minutes. The one thing that comes to mind is, in aviation, a standard rate turn is 3 degrees per second, or 2 minutes for a 360 degree turn. Timing can be critical when holding and not using GPS or similar. Why it is a total of 30 minutes I can only guess as well. Maybe something to do with fuel reserves. For basic part 91 FAA rules (daytime), an airplane must have enough fuel to fly to the destination and another 30 minutes.
Another excellent video TGV! I love the historical content, your excellent descriptions, and how you always show the horological significance of the timepieces you review! I've been watching you for years and have never been disappointed!!
I’m not sure this watch really competes with the likes of Longines or Omega, but as an alternative to Hanhart or Nivada Grenchen, and indeed Airain who are also still producing the Type XX, which you mentioned in the video, you can see the market they are aiming for and at similar price points. The choice then is on the particular style or design that appeals the most and whether the fly-back feature is of significance or just the desire for a mechanical chrono.
Great video! The thirty minute register is split in to 6 minutes not 5, with the big markers every six minutes and the small markers every two minutes. So the big markers are at zero then 6,12,18,24 and 30 the same as zero obviously. So if the hand lands on a space with no marker you know it’s an odd number.
Hi TGV , great submission as usual. Getting back to the purpose of the big eye; I seem to remember hearing of a 15 minute register on some of the Breitling cronos ? being used as a 15 minute count up to get a fighter in the air after scrambling whereas a 30 minute count up might be useful for 45 degree turns during flight navigation? I would love to hear any other comments on this topic. Interestingly enough there has always been a mystery as to the origin of the Longines big eye, surely it's point of origin and time frame has to be similar to the type twenty concept?
So glad to hear you talk about Mathey-Tissot!! My first Swiss watches were modern Mathey-Tissot's. Not amazing watches in themselves but very sentimental to me. Cheers TGV.
TGV, the background details that you bring to the watches that you review really sets your videos apart from any one else. I have looked at both Hemel and Mathey-Tissot before. I appreciate MT’s history but they seem lost as a modern company. To have a range of watches that are priced from about $100 to many thousands is a rather wide brush that detracts from the brands legitimacy to be honest. A huge brand like Seiko or Citizen could maintain such overhead, but such an obtuse brand makes the brand suspect. Hemel has been producing some really cool pieces but are not a hugely known brand. They are extremely well done but are a enthusiast type micro brand specializing in the military market (thank you Hemel). All this is to say, I almost wish Hemel had looked at one of the other original Type 20 brands to do the collaboration on this watch with. Mathey-Tissot don’t sell this on their site. Only Hemel does. But MT sell other Type 20s. It just seems that Hemel might have brought some of MT’s confusion to its brand. At this level of asking price, I would rather not have to explain “well it used to be a really cool brand and these guys (HEMEL) are showing you how nice they WERE”. I’d rather just have a Hemel. The video, details, history, and production is absolutely fantastic as always. You and your videos are, as always p, one of the highlights of my week. Excellent work. Onward and upward. Be well, my friend
I was just thinking of this microbrand yesterday evening as it was in my feed. I will be watching this review more than once as I am looking for a proper chronograph. Excited to see your presentation, TGV. Thanks in advance!
Kenneth! Great to hear from you my friend. Always a pleasure and my best to you and your family. Thank you for the support, I hope you find the prefect chrono. Happy hunting. O&U! TGV
Yay a new TGV video to go with my new watch that just arrived, I just picked up a Turtle. Can’t wait to watch this TGV! Also I know you’re birthday is coming up since it’s before mine on the 28th, so have a good birthday sir!
The type xx is wicked and i'm looking at a reissue Breguet. i haven't seen any of your videos in ages... I realised that your style has changed. That pretend goodfellas has gone. Great stuff.
Fantastic intro TGV. Always enjoy your high production values. I love this watch though having bought 3 chronographs in 2022, I will hold fire. As you say 100m would be better, only one of mine has 100m and a screw down crown, but who will swim with a chronograph? Not me for sure. I don't mind the ghost position so much. I would have always preferred an automatic in the past, but with changing watches so often and not being fond of watch winders it doesn't really matter to me now. As for the strap, I always go to my local craftsman here in Turkey for almost every watch I buy. I usually send him a photo of my watch and he makes 2 or 3 good recommendations to me. Thanks for showing us this one.
I have the Non-Hemel version 2021 with everything as in your presentation - it is a great watch complementing my Hanhart 417ES 42mm 1954 Flyback Panda version - these renditions as accurate to the original versions with modern components are great additions to the serious collector with nostalgia - well presented video TGV as always.
Another great review. Professional, informative and impartial. Thanks TGV. As soon as the closing titles run I'm already looking forward to the next video!👍
Hi TGV, great video as always. I appreciate all the insight you provide on chronograph watches, it is very helpful as I am looking at adding a chronograph to my collection when the right one comes along. I got my Sand Shark in the mail a few days ago ahead of originally scheduled(shoutout Mark and the Long Island Watch crew). It is even more gorgeous in person, and I haven’t taken it off since I got it. As you said in your video the legibility is immaculate from any angle. Even my friends who aren’t watch guys commented on how beautiful the Sand Shark is. See you in the next video, sir!
So happy to hear that, not just about the Sand Shark, thank you so much, this made my day. Glad to hear I could help, happy hunting! divers and chronos are always the most fun to track down. Here's to you my friend 🥂😎 The very best regards, TGV
Nice Eames chair. It fits you! I liked your conclusion and bringing in some other watches. That Longines watch is absolutely fantastic. I liked the Tissots and Hamilton as well! See you soon!
11:05 If the dial is really 30minutes then the large subsections would be of 6 minutes, and not 5 (as there are 5 of them). This makes the 3 subdivisions 2 minutes each which makes sense compared to having fractional division. A rare but minor slip up.
I'm sure you're going to see a lot of this in the comments. However loving the Tshirt. Add a sports jacket, and I think you've nailed a new TGV look. Had the pleasure of seeing Prince live on his last tour here in Aust. Sad that his life was cut short. Kind regards Rikki
Gorgeous watch and interesting history, too. Nowhere near "affordable" for me, unfortunately, regardless of its "value", but it was very cool to see. I guess I'll stick with my Constantin Weisz and its Seagull movement to satisfy my vintage military-inspired mechanical chronograph itch.
Thanks for the video and going over the history of the type xx. I am interested to hear your thoughts on the very similar, Mathey Tissot x Massena Lab Type XX Tribute and how you compare the two given their very similar price range :)
Stellar video. Beautiful watch. Speaking of which, I just offered someone $480 for an Islander on eBay and it was promptly declined. It's just so awesome with your logo. A few years back, your logo inspired my current Samborski Studio / TrevTweetz yellow lion (griffin) logos. The Griffin I actually drew and created to be very close to the Shield Crest Logo of Samborski, a Duke of Pomerania. I guess there's a beer sharing my name and the actual shield logo too. I will keep my eye out. I almost had a Squale, but I missed that again by a few days. Didn't check my email. Oh well. I should not be buying right now anyway.
Mathey Tissot flys under the radar, but great pieces(love the 1970 driver chronos). Some pieces are meh, but their original autos are good. I considered the Hemel colab. It's really good. Hard to get. MT makes a version with a eta7750 movement. Good, but not as cool as the colab. It'll come. I'm watching. BTW, nice shirt , TGV. I have one too. Shall we look ridiculous sporting Purple Rain with a smile. In a good way👍
Pilot here... 30 minute subdial is subdivided into increments of two minutes. Standard rate turn refers to the act of maneuvering an aircraft at a standard rate of three degrees per second. There are 360 degrees in a circle, so it would take a pilot exactly two minutes to complete a full turn at the standard rate using a constant-bank level turn.
I’ve got a question I know you could probably help me with. I just bought the new Omega moonwatch speedy. I’m Looking for a rubber strap that sits flush. I’ve only found Horus straps. Do you know any other companies? Keep up the great videos!
Thank you for the review. I wasn’t sure if Mathew-Tissot was actually any good. Probably should have done my own research but I assumed it was a rip off of Tissot.
I really like these historical videos to introduce a new watch. I wish they were a little longer, I can watch them all day. I instantly got a Hanhart vibe from this watch, but I like the addition of the 12 hour markings on the bezel. HEMEL are another one to add to my grail list 🙂
nice shirt govna! i got the full lume dial HEMEL. you should do a video on one of the best Omega Seamaster Professionals that gets the most neglect. 2254.50.00 / 2264.50.00 i think that style came out in 1998? cheers!
We're seeing a great comeback of vintage inspired chronographs. As it had been for divers. Now we have Hanhart, Nivada, Excelsior Park and many others. Love this trend
I’d love to see your opinion on some Tutima watches. I am interested in their 417-alike Flieger Chrono, partly because I love Cathedral Hands and the whole coin-edge-bezel-chrono aesthetic.
11:20 French AeroNavale chronographs had a 15 minutes subdial, as 15 minutes was considered turnover time (Carrier lift + Prep area + Launching position) between waves of 2 aircraft ! #MoonwatchUniverse #Navy

Mathey-tissot is rarely reviewed so happy to finally learn about them.

I have an early 90s Tudor submariner in blue, because of this channel. A watch that I previously hadn’t given much thought to.
I love the content of your reviews of these interesting watches and the history behind them. However, the introduction you create for the videos are an entertainment in their own right.
Type XX is my favorite watch style. Same reason I bought a Hanhart 417es. Always great content TGV.
what a breath of fresh horological air - NO DRAMA , just watch talk. ~. JDS/CT. thank you TUG .
I was only looking at these watches, Mathey Tissot Hamel automatic watches not knowing that they were not Tissot I was looking on Amazon and found that they were more expensive on Amazon then the rest of the net here in the UK. love your videos thank you
Another excellent presentation TGV. That’s a classic beauty. Vibes of the Hamilton Khaki Field with an aviator twist. Very likable indeed!
Forget the watch check. Lets talk about the T-shirt, TGV. Love the shout out to old school Prince!
Prince, the greatest EVER.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
Another great review. You feature some excellent and what would be otherwise unknown (even to a collector) watches on here and it is always a pleasure learning about the history of these timepieces.
Such a great video, with absolute clarity and honesty, as ever. Especially, your assessment of Mathey-Tissot as a modern brand. This particular watch is saved by the reputation of Hemel. There are issues, all of which you identified but the cost cannot be ignored and, in particular, the value proposition it offers.
Thank you so much Matty, O&U!

Best timepiece channel and it’s not even close. The history and the wealth of knowledge shared is brilliant

I tuoi richiami storici ormai li copiano tutti! Sei il numero 1!!! L'orologio è bellissimo e richiama i type20 in pieno!

Love the way you create your videos.... Very impressive..
I just had the most wonderful lunch on my own with your video for company. It has been a great 20mins. Thank you from El Paso TX.
This channel has the best intro sequences on UA-cam imo. 0:34 So smooth.
The song is "Come Closer" by Notize if anyone is interested.

Another great vid TGV, must say that your production on all your intros are 1st class!
Funky! Wild that the 30 min subdial has 5 big hashmarks (so 6 mins each) with the smaller marks being 2 mins. Beautiful watch! Thank you for the history as well and the discussion on the straps.
That dial and the subregisters look great even under magnification! Thanks for bringing this unknown gem to light, TGV!
Mega Cool Points for wearing a Purple Rain “Prince” tee. Well done Sir!
Superb extensive review !!!
These intros man you're the goat of intros
Another excellent video TGV! I love the historical content, your excellent descriptions, and how you always show the horological significance of the timepieces you review! I've been watching you for years and have never been disappointed!!

I, for one, appreciate the telescope 🔭 & Samurai sword 🗡️ combination. And, that is even before we get to the main event!! 💕
Love the throw back T! Beautiful watch! Great review! Cheers!
Well researched, produced and presented, thank-you!
Nicely produced TGV, as always... Great shirt by the way. Onwards and Upwards 🥃🥃🥃
Oh jeepers - that Air League Special looks AMAZING !

Thank you Mark as always my friend.

Nice review!
Nice to see a review of small and unknown brands like mathey Tissot
Collaborations I think will keep mechanical watches popular.
I'm lucky enough to own one. Bought it because of the history and my love for chronographs. I love it .
Nice Eames chair. It fits you! I liked your conclusion and bringing in some other watches. That Longines watch is absolutely fantastic. I liked the Tissots and Hamilton as well! See you soon!

This looks absolutely gorgeous! I want it!
This is a true enthusiast channel 🎉
Gorgeous watch and interesting history, too. Nowhere near "affordable" for me, unfortunately, regardless of its "value", but it was very cool to see. I guess I'll stick with my Constantin Weisz and its Seagull movement to satisfy my vintage military-inspired mechanical chronograph itch.
Nice piece, my every day are always chronos
One of Prince's sub bands was called, " The Time"
The Eames chair in the intro is amazing! I've always wanted one of those.
Thanks for the video and going over the history of the type xx. I am interested to hear your thoughts on the very similar, Mathey Tissot x Massena Lab Type XX Tribute and how you compare the two given their very similar price range :)
Fantastic Watch. I’m currently using my Breitling Copilot 765 (Which actually predates the Type XX)and this review was a pleasant surprise!
the intros are fire i love them
Prince = Pure class 👌 great vid as always TGV 🧐
Loving the shirt TGV! Would love to know Hugo’s thoughts on Prince. Top video as always, all the best 🦖
Marvin is a top marks guy. A friendly gentleman.
I love the polished bezel. Stunning!
Always enjoy TUG’s depth of historical perspective and thoughtful discussion.
Thank you!
Best regards,
TGV
I feel like the fact tgv said "at the time of recording this video" is foreshadowing. He knows something we don't
Keep up the great videos!
a gem indeed...a lot of watch for the price
Fantastic as always.
I mutter to myself "pure class" every time I check my Arnie.
🙏🙏🙏 I don't blame you. Great comment.
Thank you, people who wear Arnies are always cool
Best regards,
TGV
Another good video, nice review.
Simply a lovely watch that would appeal to both young and old watch enthusiasts.
Prince was my no one performer sad he’s gone 😢
Great to see you rocking the summer fits already....sure that you're gonna bust out the new squale collab often in the spring months. 🥂
What a lovely piece.
nice shirt govna! i got the full lume dial HEMEL. you should do a video on one of the best Omega Seamaster Professionals that gets the most neglect. 2254.50.00 / 2264.50.00 i think that style came out in 1998? cheers!
i got mine from jomashop for $1049 in 2006 now they are over $2K

Great looking watch. Hemel means Heaven in Dutch.
