Nobody is talking about how handsome looking versatile natural actor Joseph Cotton was. One of my favourite. The perfect poise and deep voice He looks so handsome in every character even as a criminal or villain. He has very expressive face. This film is so moving I think because of JC and his marvellous acting. Thank you for posting classic movies and for your effort.

Just say "Joseph Cotton was..." instead of "Nobody is talking about.." You can expect people to talk about anybody.

In the mid to late 90s I was a teenager. To be more specific I was a teenage skater/druggie. I was suffering from severe deppression and didn't understand what I was going through so my life revolved around easy pleasures. One day as I was in my usual stupor something spoke to my heart. I can only assume it was God. He said instead of just doing what I always do I should look for something better. I responded without thinking that if there was anything interesting to do I would do it, but there wasnt. As I said this I was walking by one of my parents bookcases and saw an old dusty Readers Digest. I picked it up and it fell open to "A Portrait of Jennie". I decided to read it. A 16 year old skater druggie sat down that day and read this beautiful story. I wish I could say that lead to me sobering up and changing my life, but that didn't happen for many years. But somehow this story and that experience stuck with me. It was as if a Greater Power said, "Look, you're going through alot of darkness but there's beauty here too." I never forgot that. The story or the simple act of love that lead me to it.

Good! If there's one thing you can say about life, it's... "you never know"! People have transcendent epiphanies all the time, they just go indiscussed. Keep asking for them, and, more come into your life, often to the point that they become so out of this world, they are unsharable, you would be perceived hallucinatory, as others have no frame of reference from which to judge. At the same time, they are something of a reward for a life well lived.

    • @morelhunter3966
      @morelhunter3966 8 років тому +37

I eventually had such experiences Douglas.
I eventually found God and went into missionary work for awhile where He made it clear to me that He is real and that those things talked about in the scriptures still do happen. I'm convinced even many Christians would turn on someone that claimed to have the types of experiences found in the Bible but they do in fact still happen. And God is no respecter of persons, He will speak to anyone who wants badly enough to hear Him.

    • @douglassharpe935
      @douglassharpe935 8 років тому +17

By the way, pardon the spiritual digression, posters! The important thing to keep in mind is that this world is really like a projection, all of it, including you. So, read what Vivekenda and Ramana Maharshi said, live out your life, with passion, but remember To trust 100% in God, for literally everything. To find him, you have to look outside of the projection for him, tricky but possible. That is where you will find your own soul as well. Then the epiphanies come, like the ability to see the light of God in all things.

She would then have a tender moment with a lesbian lover whilst Joe Cotton was in jail saying how wrong he was for finding a young woman attractive.

      Once the Church was holy
      back in nineteen thirty three
Men were strong on the road along
      the path to liberty
      America was moral
the meek would fight the strong
      Congress passed production codes
just to right the moral wrong
      In nineteen hundred thirty four
their time had all run out
      Hollywood was not allowed
      the mortal codes to flout
      blasphemy brought infamy
      and modesty was assured
      Buggery and Bigamy
      In court rooms were abjurd
      Hollywood made pictures
      and innocence did grow
      Nudity was banished
      from the weekly picture show
      The movie was a symphony
      of beauty in the news
      It harmonized enobled lives
      for Christian and forJews
      Now the Church is empty
      the Sheep have gone astray
      The Rabbi in his Synagog
      just promotes the FDA
      The networks are war mongering
      The internet spreads porn
      our Congress is like Ninevey
      on the planes of Babylon
      Goliath is big Pharma
      what David arms his sling
I can almost see him now
as the angel choirs do sing

I recommend Since You Went Away 1944 Jennifer Jones is the older sister and Joseph Cotten is an older man she is infatuated with a friend of her parents. Thank you for sharing with us here on youtube. I have loved old Black and white films forever.

Happy Birthday Estella! It is a very beautiful movie, I watched it 30 times maybe. I was in NYC back in January 2020, walking around in Central Park and stumbled upon that bridge by accident almost instinctively and I was stunned, the movie then flashed like a vision. I wasn't even thinking about the movie before then found myself right there by Jennie's bench, still there and intact. I walked the bridge and sang that song in that same little voice, I sound like a kid. :)

This is one of the most unusual films I've ever seen, a film that takes its time to develop its 2 main characters as 'real' people and not 'cookie-cutter', one-dimensional, stereotypical characters that you see in a lot of contemporary movies, and to explore such a deeply profound question as to whether our Life here on earth is all that there is. I have long heard of this film before without knowing what it was about or its storyline. I am a 'film buff' and have seen just about all of the old studio 'classic films' and am rarely surprised by a film I haven't seen before. This film completely surprised me in its thought-provoking original theme and storyline. It is truly a one-of-a-kind gem of a movie!

I remember seeing this movie at a very young age. I searched and searched for it. Even the Laura movie with Clifton Webb.. no that wasn't it. So I thought I imagined it. But NO! HERE IT IS!! WHAT JOY!

What is the Laura movie with Clifton Webb? Check out Peter Ibbitson! Another good one. I saw this ages ago too, I'm in my 70s. I got to video tape it years later and when I went to show it to a friend, I started to cry so had to leave the room so as not to spoil the movie. Another HUGE tear jerker: Back Street with Susan Hayward and John Gavin - THAT one. OMG, double tear jerker. OH, The Enchanted Cottage also very good!

My mother told me that she named me after Jennifer Jones. When I was in elementary school in the late 1950's--through to 1970. Kids used to ask me where my "odd-sounding" name came from, "Giggle-giggle..."
Very few were named "Jennifer or Jenni" (as my mother taught me to write my nickname ), and sometimes I was teased fairly mercilessly.
In my young years in the '50's, marvelous films such as this were not yet seen on the TV. And, they rarely played in movie houses. Even if some had, my parents would not have taken me to see a film like this thinking that I was
"too young" to enjoy/appreciate a sophisticated film such as PORTRAIT OF JENNIE...🤔???
They liked Disney films for my siblings and me, Lol.
I'm glad that these are available to enjoy and revel in now!! And I've come to like my name now. THANKYOU, Jennifer Jones!!! You are beautiful and an excellent actor!!!!

A great movie with a timeless message. Most any film of Cotten's from the 40s through the early 50s is well worth watching. His acting is so natural and effortless, and his voice during this period is suffused with a subtle depth and knowledge beyond his years. When one considers the number of truly great pictures he starred in, one wonders why he is not celebrated more as a great actor.

So haunting. Cotten is perfect as the disappointed artist who is in danger of becoming cynical, and a failure..until he meets a strange young girl, (Jones) who appears..moving through time and space... seeming to belong..nowhere..and they form a friendship.. Over the years (I am now 72, and retired) I have seen this film many times. And it always touches me deeply. It is also clear from all these glowing comments that others hold 'Portrait' dear in memory, as well...
