Says the guy with kde in the background. LOL. Follow me on Mastodon: fosstodon.org/@thelinuxcast
lol - my laptop is my experimental sort of "flavor of the month" setup. Has nothing to do with what I'm doing on my main system.
This channel has come a long way. I hope to see it further succeed, good job man!
Wow, thanks a lot for the review! I am a gnome user and it's always a delight to find a new cool extension. Besides the Open bar, I also peeped at your other extensions and did found really cool ones. Thanks for that too!
tbh the lack of customisation was what put me off of gnome originally, especially as someone who likes to get the look/feel right (ended up going with fedora), this is a nice add-on, thanks for the video on it.
All laughs and funsies until GNOME updates and extensions break.
Hardy ever happens if the extension is properly maintained
@@hlashflahflhsjfh The big IF
that's only a problem for those using rolling release distros. for everybody else it's fine
Yea but that goes for all all gnome extensions 😂
@@hlashflahflhsjfh if i use 10 extensions it only takes 1 to break my desktop...

Installing gnome rn to give this extension a shot.
Extensions always have huge issues where if they don't work and you uninstall them they don't uninstall cleanly.
Thank you for the recommendation:)!. Will definitely try out the extension, as I'm not 100% happy with the other ones I have found so far.
"That's what's been true for literally ever"
Not for those of us who came in prior to Gnome 3.
All you have to do with most Gnome extensions after an update is edit the metadata file to the current version of Gnome to make it work again. Doesn't work with every extension but does with most.
The most mystical customization on Linux is changing the color of the cursor: DEs does not have such a function, and on sites with cursors for KDE, GNOME, no one simply made a "default" cursor with different colors. I really miss Windows 11 pink cursor color with thin black border.
you can edit the cursor image by yourself. it will just take some time.
@pai64 Yeah i know, everybody on linux if something is not there likes to tell me design, develop, write, create something by myself, but this is not what i need and i don't feel like it is extraordinary feature to be on distro out of the box
@@shadyKING057 this different color cursor is actually a niche feature. i don't think it helps with accessibility. but I believe there are cursor packages out there comes with different colors.
@@pai64 Sadly there is no pack of stock mouse pointers with different colors
I'm using Aurora with KDE just because Bluefin were a bit limited to customization... Seems I'm returning to Bluefin today! Thanks for the video, Matt. Really great content!
I do have gnome as a secondary desktop. And, with a few extensions, it looks OK and functions OK. But, IMHO, there is only environment that allows a precision desktop experience: hyprland.
I've grown to love Gnome the way it is. The only extension I have is the Solaar one (to make my mouse gestures work in Wayland). Adding that and maybe changing the monospace font are the limits of my customizations... After all these years I really can't be bothered anymore. I used to waste so much time fiddling and tinkering cause once you change something... you are never satisfied. Besides, once you get a hang of Gnome's way of doing things you realize how little you miss some things. But... Gnome isn't for everyone.
Yeah, so much the same. The only exension I use is DashToDock, and I usually set some custom keybindings and after that GNOME for me is damn near perfect. I really don't have the time or patience anymore to fiddle with broken CSS or random themes, extensions and icon packs on GNOME or KDE, vanilla GNOME is just in a really good place as is and it's so good to know that I can just throw it on anything and have a great experience out of the box.
I agree! I've also realized that gnome's way doesn't need any extensions to do my daily work. And this is amazing!
I recently installed Gnome on Mint, and didn't even bother with adding an extension for random background image shuffling.
I've learned to just live with vanilla Gnome apparently, and it's fine.
for the most part you can stop extensions not running after a version update using a Dconf setting "/org/gnome/shell/disable-extension-validation" . Most extensions will still run just fine, i.e big well known extensions.
Your complexion is looking really nice in this video. I know that's an odd thing to say on a Linux video, but you've gotten your lighting perfect or a terrific beauty regimen. Either way, good for you.
The Skincare Cast.
Gnome has been highly customizable through extensions since extensions exist. This is just one of them, but there are tons that can make gnome look like what ever you want. Also gnome that uses 600mb of ram? You must be in VM with very little ram devoted to it, for me it uses a lot more than that.
@@DamnladTrap like, a LOT more than that 🤣
I remember this extension when I last used Gnome. It seems to have added quite a lot since then.
Thanks for the tip!
Me who always knew that gnome is customizable and all of that that is bullshit:
This might convince me to try Gnome finally but i really love my setup on KDE so we'll see but thank you for making this video!
You also convinced me to use OpenSuse Tumbleweed 😂 Best choice I've made so far on my PC
u can bro,but every single update and u got a broken extension
Good content, good tip.
I prefer to use gnome with all extensions disabled, because the system become faster. I use Ubuntu btw

OpenBar for the win indeed! Enjoying it on both Nobara and CachyOS! 🇸🇪🖖
It’s still January. You’re supposed to wait until April 1st for jokes like this.
How much time do you spend listening to music? Cause I would rather replace that with dash to panel taskbar.
I ended up removing it. It took up too much space
NGL i switched bro gnome to hyprland, I've never been happier
Thanks!
I've known about this extension for a while, but I have never bothered trying it. I may just do so now.
You are amazing bro
Dash to Panel is a great GNOME extension. I'm not sure what you mean about GNOME not looking good. I was able to make my taskbar look almost the same as Windows 10 and it's great. The only thing I don't like is the fullscreen "Start" menu GNOME does.
Arc Menu can give you a Windows like start menu
The full screen menu is actually pretty nice imo.
Great video. As a new Linux user I would love to see videos such as “MUST know commands”, “Must have tools/apps” etc
Just embrace muffin. 2025 is the year Matt becomes the muffin man!
It's insane to me that some people would give up 300MB of ram just to have a prettier bar that does the same thing. What's wrong with vanilla GNOME?
i get the efficiency mindset, but for 16+ gigs of ram in a system, 300mb is a splash
Gnome uses 2 gigs of resources on my pc and I have no idea why 😶
Gnome looks beautiful out of the box. And is amazingly stable. Sorry, KDE Fanboys 😊
Debian Stable + stock Gnome is my style
This is problem for me and thus I use KDE. If I have to spend time tinkering with third party extensions knowing it will break after update, it is just waste of time for me. Linux is already wasting more time than Windows or Mac on quirks. Why add more quirks when there is desktop environment where you can do all of it natively or with absolutely minimum third party code.
Three Days Grace enjoy-er :)
🤘
designs from unixporn suck
you are perfect 🔥
Ugly Kid Joes I Hate Everything about You as music playing is great 😂
Absolute shit. Deleted it and still get a notification every 30 minutes. borderline malware
libadwaita bad
it's gnome, so thanks but no thanks.
i use kde plasma with aeroplasma skin (windows 7 aero)
gnome extensions are unusable imo due to them breaking every. fucking. update.
Looks nice, but Gnome is rounded corners and I hate them. Yes I'm a boomer😜
Meh!
Wow finally gnome can look cute and be functional 😂
Gnome is really rubbish. It is unstable and relies on systemd, so I insist on using its stable version cinnamon.
GNOME it's anything but unstable
