Yeah, we didn’t do that great of a job explaining it, but he just moves his card to each new activity throughout the day, so he understands which activity he is going to do next.

It looks like a very busy day.
It’s good that Simon is learning about the letters of the alphabet, colors, and the names of parts of the body. He’s learning his colors about two to two-and-a-half years earlier than I did and he’s also learning his letters that much more quickly than I learned mine. He’s also learning about parts of the body roughly a year earlier than I did. The song you went over with Simon’s class reminds me of the “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” song from Dragon Tales which is similar to the song I remember my parents using with me when I was learning about some of the names of the parts of the body.
I noticed that Simon seems to remember the right strap of his backpack when he’s putting it on but not the left strap. I used to do the same thing when I was younger. Due to complications from a premature birth (combined with my other conditions) my right brain hemisphere is much less developed than my left. This causes me to struggle with both social and visual/spatial skills to this day. From what my neurologist told me when I was diagnosed back in the spring of 1995 these types of issues are dealt with most effectively in the first four to six years after birth. This means that if any additional neurological testing shows that Simon has any Right Hemisphere issues that his therapist could add on some extra activities to supplement his right hemisphere development.
Simon’s therapy should still focus primarily on language but if any right hemisphere issues that may exist are addressed as well this could improve his social skills and some other areas that might also need some more work. Basically he’s coming along well, his therapy might just need a few minor tweaks over the next one-and-a-half to two years.

4:08 The kids have a verse of the day for you: Pro 27:14 😂
    "Daaaad! 🙄"
And that 5:30 wake-up for you guys at the beginning of the video? My autistic sleep phase issues would like to ask why you're getting up at bedtime.
Actually, I've been trying to manage that with melatonin recently. It helps get to bed earlier, but then I end up waking up after only a few hours and having trouble getting to sleep again, so I'm often waking up around 6-ish, which is super weird for me. I may have to start taking the melatonin only when I absolutely need to be up before work in the morning.

Even though you showed this clip of Simon needed help putting the back pack on (specifically only putting on the right side but not the left without assistance) in the PDA video yesterday I am not convinced that this is a result of his PDA (even if his PDA diagnosis does happen to be correct).
I had the exact same difficulty when I was younger and whether I have PDA or not my neurologist established that for me this specific difficulty was a result of right hemisphere damage from a small stroke at birth. Between that and being on the spectrum a lot of what I did that looked like stubbornness, defiance, spite, etc. actually was not. This doesn’t mean that I wasn’t stubborn. I probably was, just not always about the things that parents and teachers assumed. It’s still possible that Simon could have something like this either in addition to his PDA or perhaps instead of it.
Incidentally the right hemisphere condition that I have in addition to being on the spectrum is called Right Hemisphere Syndrome (or Right Hemisphere Deficit Syndrome). In instances where a person has this and it remains undiagnosed for a period of time it can be misdiagnosed as Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD), Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), or even Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD), as well as Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD), and perhaps PDA. Simon’s diagnosis of PDA may be correct but even if it is he may have a neurological Right Hemisphere condition in addition to this and his level one autism. He is still younger than six (and younger than five) so if anything he has is properly diagnosed there is still enough time for him to begin to learn strategies for compensating as needed.

What Ezra and Simon have in common is that they wear special pajamas and wear diapers day and night. There's no shame in that.

Our K was going to a school where she was making excellent progress. The school district where they live opened a new early childhood school and transferred her and her brother there (he is also beingevaluatedfor autism) . The director at this new school has decided to harass the family, even hotlining them. The police and social worker showed up, checked out the house and kids, and designated the claim as unfounded. She claimed that their backpacks smelled bad (they were brand new, bought the evening before). She hotlined over chigger bites on the legs, a sore on the upper lip (K is a houdini and does injure herself sometimes), and that the bottom of their feet were dirty (they don't like wearing shoes and socks, also had been at head start all morning). They get OT and speec therapy at home and have never been hotlined before. They have been receiving services for 1 year and 3 years respectively and none of the providers, nor the police and social worker understood why they were hotlined. Sometimes Kallie's hair is unkempt because she fights having her hair taken care of and it is super curly. The kids have plenty of love, food, clothes, beds etc and the house is clean but often cluttered because of the amount of supervision the kids need. Kallie was making a lot of progress and actually starting to say some words. She is level 3 autism and you can't reason with her, she doesn't have the communication skills. My son-in-law is a fantastic stay at home Dad and so patient and loving with her. There is no abuse or neglect and I don't think that the director has any idea what taking care of a child with level 3 autism entails. They have all kinds of safety devices in place and do a great job with the kids. It is frustrating figuring out how to handle all of this. L fell and got a bump on his head at head start yesterday. The director called and was questioning them about it. She didn't even look at the folder that head start sends every day. It is ridiculous and very clear that she is going to continue harassing them.

Happy Sunday! Me again with another question. How do you deal with teachers and other well meaning adults who say “oh everyone is on the spectrum to some extent” when you share your child’s diagnosis. I understand they are trying to be nice but I think that’s trivializing the struggles and challenges that people on the spectrum face.

    • @7Aheadfamily
      @7Aheadfamily 8 місяців тому

That’s a good question. Usually they are well-meaning, so I try not to take it to heart. But I can understand why someone would find that very annoying. If you feel like someone is treating autism as a flippant thing, I suppose you could bring up some things that are difficult, to help educate them on how real autism is, and how it does affect our daily life.

He doesn't have ADHD, at least not that we can tell, He has been diagnosed with Autism, and a lot of times when people are Autistic they can seem like they don't have it, to some people for short periods of time, but if you were to be with our son for 24 hours you'll know he's autistic. That isn't a bad thing, it is part of who he is, and we encourage him not to hide it, but be himself, but also, we don't want people telling him that he isn't, that is confusing too.

@@7Aheadfamily sometimes I’m a morning person, and lots of teens and young adults sleep in because of staying up. 🛌

Very true ❤️. We typically go to bed pretty early, so that helps. 😊
