I connected 5.1.2 in Main zone and 2ch in Zone 2 - but I'm unable to play same audio in both zones when the source is TV. My TV is connected to the receiver's HDMI OUT using eARC, I'm trying to play TV sound in all zones (like a party mode). Do you know how to get it work?

With minidsp and rew you can also time align the subwoofers together if they are not equal distance from the mlp. About a year ago on the Hi-Fi Summit you had someone from NAD takling about the T 778. You should ask him if NAD will be adding Auro-3D anytime soon. I have a 778 that I got from Crutchfield in September and have until November 22 to test out Dirac and see if I want to keep it or not. I hope Onkyo dose add Auro-3d to their upcoming models.

    Hi Joe 😊
I have an older Onkyo tx-nr3010 (if memory serves🤪). It had Audyssey, and I really do not like it. For the most part, it is ok, but the dynamic eq, fucks up some parts of the bass (insane overboost, making me almost jump out of my seat🤪), and if dynamic eq is turned of, things become too flat. So I use my Pioneer SC-LX 87 instead (also old), and it sounds a lot better. Also helps that the MCAA (roomcorrection) alows me to make changes to just about everything and have 6 different presets 😊 Also helps that it is a class D amp (powerfull), and I can actually bi-amp my center which is a fullrange tower 🙃 (seperate amps on L&R)
I am still waiting for a reciever that can deliever enough power to the centerchannel, have all the new features, and adjustability of the SC-LX87. Been looking at the RZ-50 and Yamaha A6A...
Probably will wait for Onkyo or Pioneer to make a higher end reciever.
I think the dirac live in the onkyo is full range.
Keep up the good work mate 🤘👍🤘

My question is since all my speakers (except the subs) output highs and midrange frequencies will Dirac really help or could I get buy with Audyssey. If I don’t need Audyssey I can probably save $300-$600 on my receiver. Your opinion and insight is needed.

I placed an order for the RZ50 through my local Video Only retailer near me. The big sell for me was Dirac and 3 HDMI 2.1 inputs for my Xbox and PS5. I wanted a higher end receiver or processor with multiple HDMI 2.1 input but the only other choice was the new Yamaha. Unfortunately their HDMI 2.1 tech is not ready so I'm not going to pay them to be a beta tester. I have a Yamaha RX-A1050 now but I can't get the room correction to blend my speakers nicely when doing 7 Ch stereo so I want to try something different. Fingers cross that the HDMI board won't fry once I get the receiver.

I am scared the new Onkyo at 1400 bucks will have more features Atmos etc but the sound quality wont be as good as what I have now. So I bought the Onkyo NR6050 (not THX certified) the center channel sounded weak and "hollow" I decided (in part because of this video) to buy the Onkyo (Yes I like Onkyo) NR7100 because Dirac. The center channel sounds better, the odd things (appreciate any help) turning the filter off sounds "bigger"?
    I have mixed speakers:
Front left and right are Wharfedale 400SE 40Hz-20,000Hz (I think)
Center 95Hz-20,00Hz Infinity Entra point 5
surrounds 100Hz-20,00Hz Infinity Entra point 5
Sub 34Hz-150Hz Infinity Entra point 5
Dirac set them all to 70Hz? except the sub LFE 120Hz
Should I set the crossover according to the specs?
Should I retest Dirac at a higher base volume?

In my mind, room treatment is the wise decision because no matter what gear you ever buy.. the room will already be " tuned " properly.. and that allows the freedom to get whatever you want without listening to that " Woooopp! “room correction “ is only needed when you have 1 other person in the room saying your speakers sound bad without it. 😂. i have ran 2.1 for years in a very small bedroom with a stereo receiver. i have enjoy my movies and music for 10 years like that. hmm maybe it’s a placebo effect, where a company keeps saying you “ need” room correction to try to sell products. reminds me of diamond companies saying you need a “wedding ring” to get married when there is no such thing as a wedding anything. companies manipulate the public by putting the word wedding onto any product to make you think you need them. wedding ring, wedding dress, etc..etc..

    • @joentell
      @joentell  2 роки тому +1

That may be true, but it's pretty easy to tell whether room correction could help by simply doing a measurement. If you have a calibrated mic, take a measurement of your speaker, then compare it to how it measures from your listening position. You will see how the room affects the sound.

@@joentell i’m not trying to give you a hard time. i’m just digressing about the whole topic. i just find it interesting. i have been running the same hk3490 stereo receiver with a paradigm x30 crossover unit for my music and movies for 10 years roughly. i enjoyed my movies and music. i never once thought, hey i need a room correction cuz maybe my ears are wrong. i was thinking of getting the rz50 or denon 3700h, but i only have 2.2 set up in a 880 cubic foot bedroom, very tiny. iam only curious about the dual sub equalizer thing on the denon to see if it would sound any different, or worth it when it’s just a 2.2 set up, 😜

Audyssey has become pale because they don't have decent tools and haven't kept up, they don't focus on interactive user tooling for consumers and this is a major problem, if you look at DIRAC they been spending time getting tools built around their services for users and business customers.

    This has me asking questions.
If Dirac is so game changing and really changes completely how you speakers sound then why care about speakers any more.
Get a good pair of flat response speakers and subs as a blank slate, for Dirac to color to a response curve of your liking.
I always thought you brought speakers for their colouring of the sound. Now it probably would be a waist of money, if you are just going to change it.
I would guess speakers above a certain cost will no longer matter, as you are removing their uniqueness and sound traits to fit the curve.
Looks like a better sound average, but everything may infact start sounding the same.
Is this what we really want?

    • @joentell

No matter how good the DSP is, aspects of the speaker still matter. It's not just the on-axis frequency response of the speaker that matters, but also how consistent the sound is when you move off-axis. This is called the directivity index. If it isn't consistent as you move off-axis, you can "fix" the frequency response for on-axis while making off-axis worse. In a typical room, you hear a combination of both the on-axis and off-axis sound.
The directivity or radiation pattern of the speaker has a big effect on how it interacts with the room and therefore how it sounds in a room. With a typical speaker, you cannot change that sound characteristic of a speaker. With many speakers facing different directions, it's possible to use beam-forming but definitely not common.
Another physical property of a speaker is it's frequency range. You can only extend the bass or high frequencies up to a certain extent. If the speaker can't do it, you can't force it to.
So to answer your question, I do think making speakers more accurate is desirable. Isn't that the definition of Hi-Fi? It's supposed to be a high fidelity reproduction of the original recording. But accuracy is only one aspect of this hobby.
I just got into mechanical watches. Accurate timekeeping is also desirable, but it's not everything. As with watches, I think hifi has to do with the other aspects of design: how it looks, how it makes you feel to own it, your perception of the brand, what others think of the brand, how it fits with the other components (with watches it's how it goes with your clothes).
To me, accuracy should be the prerequisite. It doesn't mean we can't have fun with it. After all, if you have an accurate speaker with a good directivity index, that means you can EQ it to sound the way you want it too!

      @@joentell thanks for the response.
I totally agree. Hifi is many things and different aspects are more important to different people.
Just pointing out a few thoughts. I had similar questions for the sony ht a9 on another channel.
Where calibration / dsp meets hardware.
As someone who plays with impulse responses for guitar gear, it quite a cool piece of tech.
Emulating electronics, speakers and mics and acoustics is very real and really will have a huge impact on future hardware and software.
I think things like the a9 will come in and out of fashion but will eventually be the norm, once they are "good enough". Just like streaming.
There will always be enthusiasts, who want to go the path less travelled.
      😀

The internet service where I live is so sketchy and so expensive as to be undesirable and unaffordable. Dirac doesn't work without a constant connection. I returned an avr because of that fact. I just have to trust my own ears and set it up myself. I do think it was overpriced because of its lack of portability.

Purchased ONKYO TX-RZ50. Tried MULTIPLE TIMES to calibrate with DIRAC with Windows and Android version. I am a techie BTW. Used high quality mic and it either told me too much DB or not enough. Gave up after 5 tries and used ancient built-in version instead. VERY UNHAPPY. This was part of the reason I spent the money on this receiver. FUTURE OWNER BE WARNED. DIRAC apps are VERY BUGGY and MAY NOT WORK. There's no one to help on this either. Neither ONKYO nor DIRAC has online resources to help you troubleshoot. I feel like I was cheated on this expensive feature that doesn't work.

i always ask, do you enjoy your music using your ears, or letting measurements dictate what sounds good to you?. if your speakers sounded great. why on earth would u even look at any measurements? because once you do, and see some peak or null somewhere, then you would be like, oh i was wrong, it doesn’t sound good, cuz i measured a peak and before i guess my ears were wrong. 🤣🤣🤣🤪🤪🤪

Ignorance is bliss. Most of the time if it sounds good, it also measures well. Do you drive a car and say, "Damn, this is quick!" and the horsepower, torque, and power/weight ratio doesn't reflect the experience? They go hand in hand. A lot of people buy Bose and this old systems were missing huge chunks of the frequency response. Is that good sound? Beats by Dre headphones sold a ton and they had exaggerated bass. Are those good sound? How about the guys with loud car audio systems and the license plate rattling. They also like the sound, but is it good? Good enough is the enemy of better. I'm trying to get people to better than a soundbar....or TV speakers...or Bluetooth speakers which...people also enjoy.
