Thanks Robin, appreciated the info! 👌 I love the Windy App - so wish we had the technology back in the late 70's ('77-79) when I did a circumnavigation in my 36' steel one-off multi-chine ketch, Bellatrix. It's been awhile but getting ready to do it again, and hopefully soon, whilst I still am able! May I contact you privately (I have your email and your cell), as I have a few questions I'd like to ask confidentially and not within this forum?
Sadly no longer available on the free version of the app. Not sure if it's worth upgrading to the paid version or alternatively changing to predictwind which has more weather routing functionality but is much more costly?
Hi George Yip, no longer available on free version, Ja, so pick your best option. I’ve always used Windy, I am familiar with it, love the graphic interpretation…so happy to pay the very affordable sub fee…up to the individual to make their call. Which is cool.
Baie lekker man! Did not know about it after using Windy for years! We are from Cape Town, but live in Florida and sail out Island Packet 35 here. What is your boat? looks cool! I notice a 'Save route to favorites' option that seems to be available in the paid version? Have you tried it? I wonder if you can then play it back without internet access?
First, TUVM for introducing me to this feature!!! Didn't know it was available. I'm using the free version with a registered user name and the "save route to favorites" is available for me using Chrome as my browser on Windows 7 Pro. It doesn't seem that the "distance & planning" feature is available on iOS or Android. That's a shame.
@@karlbass7895 Hi Karl The. feature is only available on the desktop version and only on the ECMWF weather model...weather model tabs bottom right of screen. Hope that helps. (Robin)
Thank you, yours is an excellent tutorial! I have one question, HOW TOO recorded your planned Windy route, so you can use it offline? Thanks.SV SKOIERN IV
Hi John Thanks for that. I am not sure on Windows, but on Apple use Shift, Command and key # 5, press together. That will record your screen as you run the video. Hope that helps John!
@@DRIFTINGsailingadventures Thanks for your reply. Since your tutorial i have checked other windy plugins including currents. Not sure how up-to-date they are and impressive graphically impressive. Thank you for your helpful hint. But I have MS Windows & Pro, so I still have some research to do on Saving routes as you do..
Hi Robin, enjoyed your video, BUT, using the free windy APP version on IOS I do NOT see the same MENU on the left side and NO DISTANCE AND PLANNING FEATURE…am I missing something?
Thanks for the video. I have started to play around the planning feature and cannot for the world of me figure out why the wind barbs shown in the bottom (along with wind speed/ gusts, waves, etc...) do not match the actual direction of the wind as shown in the main screen, ex. In your video it is clear most of the time the wind is coming from the NE, yet the barbs in the trip planning data table show winds from the the left to right which in my world with north up... would be saying you'd have westerly winds. Makes no sense and makes the feature useless due to its ambiguity and conflicting information.
So I figured out how to orient the barbs to a north up orientation which then puts them in sync with the wind map. There is a small box with icons for your bottom data bar, hover cursor in it or maybe it 'more' shows up without hobering... click 'more' and it will open up a small screen which will have options for the barbs.
Can it plan the best VMG for parts of the laid out course? ( routing ) as using it like a road map as the crow flys, would not be accurate enough for my usage purposes. Any advice appreciated champ. Thanks.
Hi, no it’s not capable of that. It’s a guide to what weather you would experience along a planned route without having to move your cursor and change the future time at sporadic intervals.
hi well presented. Just a query you may be able to answer. We stumbled across your video trying to find the answer. which wind direction is correct?? the chart shows a NE wind direction (on your vid) but the graph for the plan is different!! and different when we try to plan. Or are we completely looking at something the wrong way?
Hello and Thanks for the great tutorial. We just tried it! Something we can't figure out is why the wind arrow direction in the bottom grid always shows NE direction. Is there a setting were missing ? Again thx! SV LOST LOON
Cool feature that I was unaware of. Thanks so much. How many days can you slide up before departure? Does the accuracy change much then? Greetings from the Netherlands, we do expect SNOW tonight…
Hi Martin Glad I am not in the Netherlands! The Windy forecast only looks 10 days into the future. You can slide a three day trip to the end, but it will only show you to the 10 day limit, so it may only show you one or two days of your planned three day trip. All forecasts get more accurate as you get closer to present time and the data becomes more relevant. The accuracy and the timing on accuracy in my experience depends on a number of things, for example, in South Africa the accuracy is reduced depending on the time of the year ie. in-between seasons (Spring and Autumn) is less accurate than when in the middle of a season (Summer, Winter), but normally from 4-5 days out is pretty accurate. Hope that helps!
Hi Just connecting to the url through my browser...it's not browser specific, however, the feature is only available on the ECMWF weather model, you'll see the weather model tabs bottom right of your screen.
Hi Robin, thank you for sharing your thoughts about Windy. I life in South Africa and use Windy every day. However, the planing tool you show in your video is not listed on my Ipad. Do you have any idea why not? Regards, Alex
I cant se that this feature is free. On my computer its a popup cover the windbar says "Get Premium"!? And the speed you entered for your boat varies with the wind. Unless you have a motor boat.
Hi Sorry for the late reply. Yip it looks like they’ve changed the requirement, you now need to be a Premium subscriber. My subscription expired…happy to renew ‘cause Windy and the Distance & Planning features are such good resources. All the best Robin
My version of Windy does not have the planning feature. The top left of the App does not have the menu. Menu is on the right but it has no distance and planning.
Hi Lynn Are you checking on your phone or computer? The function is only on the desktop version and the other thing I show have mentioned on the vid is that the feature is only available on the ECMWF model. So, you need to select that weather model…make it your default setting. Let me know if this helps. Robin
Hi, I'm a little bit helpless. I don't have the Option 'planning'. I don't even have the things on the left side. I am a premium member. I also made an Update today. Can anybody help me?
Hi Charly Are you viewing on a computer? The feature is only available in the desktop version of the app and only on the ECMWF weather model. Let me know how you go. Thanks Robin

Hi Nancy You’re a 100% right… for some strange reason the wind arrow is not accurate. I rather check the wind direction “feathers” along my course.
How does it compare to PredictWind?
Hi I’m afraid we haven’t used PredictWind so cant compare.
