  • Do you dream of sailing the Caribbean someday? Are you looking for your next tropical sailing destination?
    Come along with us as we explore the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean and show our process for route planning. We show how we use the PredictWind app for weather forecasting and route planning to design a comfortable cruise in the Caribbean as we sail from St. Martin to Anguilla, St. Barts, Saba and then do a nightsail to the British Virgin Islands.

    Our cruising plans do include all of the Caribbean, thanks to the inspiration of you two. We are prepping our boat this year and will set out from Lake Erie either the fall of 2020 or 2021. We do hope to catch up with you two somewhere out there. Love these types of videos btw....the travel videos are good too, but these are way more helpful. Thanks for sharing.

    How did people planned for passages before predicte wind, in 70's, 80's. I'm really fascinated by how technology has changed cruising.

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  5 років тому +1

      We started our full-time cruising in the 80's and used to listen on the shortwave radio for weather forecasts. In 1990 we got a HAM radio and could speak with a forecaster in person :-)

    After two and a half months cruising Sweden, Denmark and Germany we put our boat on a container ship in The Netherlands (Eemshaven) bound for Baltimore. We are very interested in crossing from the east coast to the Caribbean in the fall of next year, 2020. Any thoughts on the organized rallies that make that trip would be greatly appreciated. BTW we have your DVD collection but need to go back to watch to see if you covered one of the Caribbean rallies in your videos. Thanks, Chris.

    Can you explain why the St. Martin to St. Johns trip is upwind? @3:00 the screenshot shows 95 degrees true which is a beam reach. Maybe we need to adjust for apparent wind plus leeway so you need to point higher? I thought sailing up and down the Leeward Islands is typically on a beam reach due to the consistent easterly trade winds... Thanks!

      haha yes that's coming soon to a boat near you I'm sure! But seriously we can prepare for the need to change sails - perhaps being ready to reef at night when we see ba weather coming.

    I work with those weather models, and I would pay more attention to the predict wind models. Likely they may include Sea Surface Temperatures and are likely tuned for winds close to the surface. Generic Gribs are likely not tuned to such things and will be slightly less realistic. Also keep in mind any model beyond about 3 days is progressively unreliable.
