  • Thirty five years later I am still enjoying my remote controll toy that I bought new in 1983. The Tamiya Subaru Brat was having a speed controller issue. This mechanical part controls the electric current flow to the motor for forward and reverse control. The copper contacts were worn out and needed to be replaced. Finding a mechanical controller is almost impossible because they are not made anymore. My option was to upgrade to an electronic speed controller. In this video I show how I replaced the ESC. The upgrade works very well. I also upgraded the stock motor to make more torque and speed. It's been a really fun improvement. Thanks for stopping by and checking out the Ozzstar channel. Holy crap, that thing RIPS! Now you gotta fix that front wheel, lol! That was epic slow-mo action there! 🤣 Nice job getting her back in action, Glen! 👍👍
    '83 was a great year. Not so much for cars, but for music: we had Van Halen release 1984, ZZ Top - Eliminator, Def Leppard - Pyromania, Quiet Riot - Metal Health, Motley Crue - Shout at the Devil, and so many more classics. I still have all of them on cassette. 🤘😬🤘
    I think that was the year I got a ColecoVision for Christmas, too. I had the Dukes of Hazard video game with the optional steering wheel and gas pedal setup. Man was that great!
    Bought my first pack of cigarettes too - Newport Menthol Kings ... 😂🤣😂 Me and the neighborhood kids had a bicycle gang, LOL! We'd ride around the neighborhood smoking cigarettes, swearing, and raising general hell. I was 10. Ahh the good ol' days! 🤣

      The good old days for sure. I listened to all the same bands, add in Ozzy. Yeah those Newports were popular. $1.75 a pack. lol Lifted 4x4 trucks with 44 inch swampers were in and I loved 3 wheeler ATC's. Good times before cameras everywhere and cellphones galore. Take care buddy.

      @@ozzstars_cars - I hear that, man - never could've dreamed how 21st Century life would be. I thought we'd have flying cars by now, lol.
      Love Ozzy! Can't recall which album came out around then, but I remember seeing Diary of a Madman records in the corner store here when it first came out - mom wouldn't let me buy that one ... was too evil looking! 😁
      Always wanted a ATC250R. Never did get one ... but about 10 years later I scored a '86 Fourtrax 250R - that thing was a missile! Loved it. First time splitting the cases on a 2-stroke, after I sent the chain into the shift shaft, which bent and took out a nice chunk of the left side case. My buddy had a 310 kit in his ATC - thing was INSANE. Had another buddy with a Tri-Z 250 - that was no slouch either.
      Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Glen! Fun chatting! We'll see ya on the next one.🍻

      A small fortune for the fast ones with full independent suspension. 😉

    I would imagine a Subaru toy like that would make you a Subaru fan for life.

      Owned an 2001 Outback, 3.0l 6 cyl, that car had 200k, trouble free when sold for a larger car. Other than no more Subbies in my life. You?

      never did own an import.....closest thing I owned to an economy car was a Park Avenue diesel, 1982 bought it new and was the best car I ever owned and really miss it. I also noted your toy was blue. lol

      The correlation from the old days to now must be speed. 😁 How's your Corvette doing Wyatt?

      @@ozzstars_cars Oh man, I love that car. More important, my wife loves the car. So much so she's hinting that a C7 might be in our future. Since getting it painted however, I have noticed I have nightmares about parking it at Wal-Mart and a shopper creaming a buggy into it. :)

      @@wyattoneable I kind of thought you would enjoy the car. Don't let the fear of the internet tell you it's junk and deprive yourself of an awesome ride! Have fun. 👍

    Now this was a different video! Amazing that it still works after 30 years and looks pretty fast with those upgrades. Poor joker’s right front wheel just couldn’t stay on. 😜👍

      Can't believe it either. The spindle shaft literally seperated from the knuckle. Red loctite to the rescue!

    Two thumbs up for Haley catching that flip! Would the new module support swapping out the Ni-? batteries for Li-Ion? Would probably be even lighter, last longer, and who doesn't love adding another fire hazard to the mix :)

    • @ozzstars_cars
      @ozzstars_cars  5 років тому

      The new Ni-mh battery I installed is a big improvement over the original Ni-Cd. If I upgrade to a brushless then the Li would be even better. It uses 7.2V and the max I can go is 2500mah without burning anything up. Haley is a good listener after we discussed filming style many times, which was edited out. 😉🤣

    Nice toy Glen! We've no big boys toys in the house, just little boys toys 😂 My sons RC from Toy Story and his ride on BMW which has a remote too. Not as fast as yours otherwise I'd probably drive it myself 😉👍

      Easy, thats why as a kid it was good experience to build and work on the r/c car. Even the gearbox comes out and apart in less than 5 minutes. I chose the posi-trac setup but there is a limited slip differential option. ;-)

    I recently purchased the Subaru brat kit assuming it’s the latest version. I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction to find a regular stick controller , servo and speed controller I need to buy to finish the project oh and battery and charger. If available, a combo pack would be awesome.

    • @ozzstars_cars
      @ozzstars_cars  6 місяців тому

      No real good resources these days but the internet search engine. Modern battery and charger is the way to go and almost all r/c transmitters now have the 'wheel'. I'm not a fan of them but it is what it is. Have fun with your new toy Joel!
