Remember to do the following to convert the curve into mesh, after you have finished setting your curve you have --> to be in object mode --> object --> convert --> mesh.

Also a Bevel/Object cross-section is very useful for these pipes, one can do a square cross-section pipe or a triple-wire cord or a flat cable like in those old PC drives. Hell, you can even open your own spaghetti factory! All you need is just select the curve, go to Data->Geometry->Bevel and instead of "round" click on "object" and then select any closed curve you have lying around in your model. Tutorials suggest to start with a Bezier circle, from the same Add->Curve->... sub-menu. Enjoy!
