Very nice. I've used chicken wire, roughly formed and then covered with newspaper/papier-mâché for the rough first layer base for large rock formation. I never considered cardboard and a rubber mallet. UA-cam recommended this video today. I’m glad they did. I just subscribed and am looking forward to checking out more of your videos.

To be honest I made the four rocks of this series four years ago and didn’t record my time. I know that I made four rocks over a 3-D. Which we’re not full workday I would guesstimate that it was about 5 hours total time to make the one Rock that you’ve asked about

I’ve done a lot of hand carving over the years and the key is to have a Mud that’s strong but not too strong so as it doesn’t crack as it dries, but you wanna let it dry enough that you can carve it but it’s still firm .

Thanks for your vid! I'm in a theatee group and we need some relatively portable rocks you could also sit on. Would you say you can safely sit on these without damaging them?

In this particular video has a lot of my videos I just use what’s locally available at Lowe’s and Home Depot for my Cement mixes. In this case. It was just a premix mortar that I used and didn’t modify it for any performance enhancements or characteristics. . Stronger and lighter weight mixes in my training courses, both hands-on and DVD

Very cool! How heavy is the final product? Could someone sit on it and it remain structurally intact? Is it easy to lift? I am thinking of making a rock as a hiding place for a geocache. Thanks!

The rock in this video I think weighed about 40 to 50 pounds and yes someone can sit and stand and jump up and down on it and it’s not going anywhere .

Well, to be honest, it is easy to do.
Like in anything, your first attempt will not be as good as your 10th and so on. The key to being successful at anything is to keep at it.

I’m assuming you’re referring to the tables that I’m building the rock on??? if so, they are generally 2’ x 3’ or four depending on the table and 29 inches tall

For this video, I used just a regular premixed mortar that I got from Lowe’s, but keep in mind there a whole bunch of formulas that I utilize to obtain increase performance characteristics for many diverse applications .

I’ve seen so many people using cardboard and I am just curious due to my horrible experience after a flood, won’t that just become a mold and fungi habitat? Seems potentially dangerous for people and animals

I’ve been using cardboard since the early 80s to make rock in the last 22 years I’ve lived in Oregon, which is a very wet climate and I’ve never had a problem.

I’ve seen a lot of people use plastic mesh, I’ve only used metal lathe for rocks. Is the mesh available at Home Depot? Is it a fiber glass mesh? I want to try this stuff

      www.homedepot.com/p/BOEN-38-in-x-150-ft-Non-Adhesive-EIFS-Stucco-Mesh-EM-38150/203071686?
This is a poly propylene mesh product, but there are mesh manufacturers who make it out of glass .

As to whether fake rock is less expensive than real rocket really depends on the application and access . To each his own, I always say.

I design outcroppings...I consider it an art. The boulders I design are sculptured far more intricately than the card board box method seen here. My husband and I have created cliff faces and when one is using cements one must think as the rock as part of a larger possibility...t..and one that fits as something that could've been made by Mother Nature over millions of years.. These rock designers are using gimmicks...which can help...but if you are serious about a much larger project i suggest you get out into nature and OBSERVE how the earth really works... Harland Hand designed a fabulous garden near San Francisco and I suggest you GOOGLE his master piece of a garden... Again...get out into nature and REALLY OBSERVE!!! have fun...we are..

Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate you watching my video. Keep in mind that I have gone out and extracted over 1000 feet of molded rock and I cast very realistic features. Unfortunately UA-cam viewers want to see things made out of cardboard I know this because of the analytics of my channel I would much rather put out, more of my better work, but unfortunately it doesn’t get views. I have made over 1000 projects that are high-end home oriented. I like yourself study nature and try to replicate it as such. Unfortunately the UA-cam errors that I’m dealing with are rudimentary and One something cheap and easy not necessarily as high-quality as I’m able to make.
