FYI, for shimano DC reels, you are supposed to set the spool tensioner as loose as possible while minimizing side to side movement. It makes a huge difference.

I'm a Shimano man myself I have been my whole life it's what my dad used when I was little. That was 20 years ago. I personally like the Shimano tournament series. Not to expensive definitely holds up I still mine from when I was probably like 15 years old and yeah it's a little gritty paint missing on the top from it rolling around in the back of the truck but it still catches fish to this day. Loving the videos by the way.

On Shimano DC reels, depress the thumb-bar to release the spool, then loosen the spool tension to only allow a tiny bit of side to side slack on the spool shaft. Then set the Line-type settings, on the external dial, that controls spool braking to prevent birdsnests. Great Cast-off !

I have one of those cheap Amazon baitcasters. It casts just as far as my Tatula. But it feels cheap.
I bought it to take on my kayak so if I drop it overboard I'm not out $200.
    Good rundown. Thanks.

I feel we dont need anything expensive man I've bought so many shimano abu 13 fishing lews from low end to most expensive....I find that there's not much more difference really, guess it's just preference. Good stuff Mdlr🔥🐟

Backbone, Schmackbone. Not so much an issue with 1/4 oz weight.
I am beginning to think, as of late, that the type of braking is not nearly as important as having it well adjusted. Where I think the Shimano or other premium reels shines is in the quality of the bearings, free or fixed spool design, quality of the levelwind components, etc. Also in general I would expect the Chinese reels to not last as long as a high end reel, and IMHO durability is the real reason to prefer a more expensive reel, apart from smoothness, fit and finish, and just simple pride of ownership.
For most small reel, small bait fishing, anything much over 100' casts is all gravy. 40 yards is great and there is not much point in agonizing over the distance when you can get 40 yards with any consistency while throwing 1/4 oz.
No marks for the cheap reel brake setting? Carry a grease pencil with you.
If you try this with 1/8 oz and if you optimize the brake settings for the Shimano, you might see more of a difference. But having said that, all I have is cheap reels or elderly used higher quality reels. No way will I pay the big bucks for a brand new "rich man" reel.

I know I watched this video late, as in Two years late.. However it is relevant to me as I’ve recently been doing my own research and casting test on testing cheaper versions of fishing reels and how to improve them.. I took a Kast King Assassin reel and added new bearings and they out perform almost any reel I have up to $350 .. your a 100% correct on castings.. however internally it may be a different story. But the KastKing are 5.4oz there amazing for the money.. Thanks for sharing.. Tight lines..

    I’m
Always open for comparison. Honestly I want to get the best bang for my buck. I think the reality of these test is where we give the same amount of pressure for casting on both reels and gather the numbers. Also the longevity of both the rods. There’s no doubt in my mind the cheaper reel possibly may come out the winner. But will it last as long? I don’t know there is so many variables in these kind of testing conditions

So how will the Sougayilang cast 2.8 gm lure/baits?
Isnt that kinda the litmus test to see if the braking system/spool dynamics shine or flop?
Most reels can cast 7gm a fair distance if paired with the right rod and line combination.
However longevity of reel and support of product are something people will pay extra for, pay for peace of mind.
With all of that being said, if the 'Sogay' is made with premium parts and it has a healthy lifespan then it certainly is worth $39.99 for being a budget baitcasting reel.
On another point did you open it up and see if the body is made of alloy or is it all plastic? - Of course the spool is machined aluminum however the SLX has a metal body, but then again you're paying $140 for that JDM reel in 2022.
If the 'Sogay' has a metal frame then that would probably put that reel at the top of the list for king of the budget baitcasting reels (thats if it can handle 1/32oz down to 1gm lures) correct me if I am wrong but I think the SLX can cast bait finesse lures?
I think the *Reel Test* crowned the Kastking Zephyr as the best money for bfs baitcasting reel in his tests.
(I sent mine back looking for a better low budget option) and after watching this video I am now awaiting the red energy reel from Sougayilang, I will spool 150/170 ft of 4 lb Trilene monofilament on that reel then do my best to dial everything in and attempt to cast lightweight lures...
I'm going to weigh the spool and see how it compares to the Shimano and Daiwa equivalents (caius and fuego models) if I can get 30 yards on a 2 g lure then I will keep the Sougayilang and maybe buy another to put on a tight creek ditch rod and I will be putting it on a 'hot cast' rod one piece 😎(what a great little rod for $5!)
Thank you for your hard work doing these tests and this video, your work is much appreciated and helps me sort out my BFS riddles 🤙 blessings and Aloha from West Michigan

Fishermen do not understand that only the shaft bearing makes a reel feel better and smoother on the cast, and any more than two bearings on the spool only add more friction to your cast. I have found that my high-quality 80's Shimano Magnulite, which only has two spool bearings and one shaft bearing, will outperform most of today's reels with ten bearings and up. I found my old Lews speed spool reel from the early 80s to perform better than many of today's fishing reels. The Lews is smother than all my high-end Shimano and Pflueger reels, and the Lews speed spool is cheap. It does not even have a Magnetic breaking system on it and only two bearings. When it comes to spinning reels, why pay for a spinning reel with a tone of bearing when the spool on a spinning reel does not even spin, making all those bearing useless?

Other things that matter--drag system, durability, enjoyment of use. Casting distance sure doesn't justify the extra $200 for the Shimano but the other variables might.

Casting Distance is only one measure of a good reel, and that is mostly the direct result of the quality of bearings on the Main Spool-shaft, and their proper tension adjustment. Everyone knows sealed bearings last much longer, except for maybe Ceramic bearings,. The newer precision CNC-cut brass gears are the smoothest, and don’t corrode like steel or aluminum.

Casting is only one part of a quality reel. Durability, drag, ergonomics, and weight all play important parts to make a quality reel. Furthermore, I feel Shimano has taken a turn to poorer performance for mid range reels ever since they rebranded and repainted the Chronarch E series. To me the lazy rebranding was the beginning of the end for mid range Shimano reels. After the infamous rebranding, Shimano started pumping out the Malaysia reels and the mid range market became mediocre. I’ll stick with my Chronarch Ds and Curado Es for mid range and Calais/Conquests for my upper range...
