Wow, cool, Westcliffe.....That's an off the track place. You must have family or friends there. It's a good place to start a trip to Canyonlands from. Depending on the time of year, cross the Sangre DeCristo range via Medano Pass 4x4 rd. into the Great Sand Dunes and head west-ish from there. Lots of choices at that point.
Maps I recommend as a great over view and pretty good detail for our western states are the Benchmark State Atlases (www.benchmarkmaps.com/). You can get them on Amazon or their site. They are awesome for off road routes, and topo overviews with good relief shading. A great sister Atlas to those are the Delorme Gazeteer state maps. You can use those atlases to plot a great overland route. There have resource info in them as well on camping, fishing, parks points of interest, etc. If you are going to focus on an area to stay in and explore, the National Geographic / Trails Illustrated (water proof, rip proof) maps of particular regions are awesome (www.natgeomaps.com/trail-maps/trails-illustrated-maps) . Trails Illustrated does have a Canyonlands specific map as well as I believe all of the National Parks. Other map companies out there like "Latitude 40" make great regional maps as well. Then when within an area, stop in to a local BLM or USFS station and look for land use maps to further dissect what may be public and private. There are some GPS and phone map programs that you can get on that topic as well. I have been through areas where signs and people tell you everything is private and to stay on the road, only to discover with the right map...."oh lookie there, a section of State Land", or a little known gem of public lands.
Hope that was some help. Safe Travels !
